Well, looking at the source I couldn't find where v4l2 input was being
set for go7007, despite the choice being present in myth-setup, so I
hacked up a little constant input source setter. It sets the source to
S-Video, and only S-Video. I haven't looked into how to hook it up with
the underlying input source configuration enty... perhaps someone more
qualified would like to give it a go, or yell at me for being a lazy ass
and I'll put some more time into it. Anyway, here's the patch:

Also, how does one go about exporting .nuv for backup on removable

What would be really nice is to have the myth data sitting in the
transport header (ie ogg fields or similar) so that archived myth
recordings could be identified and external myth recordings could be
integrated (ie this file was dl'd and it's this program, which is
scheduled, but I now have this episode, so no need to record this

not record an episode which is already recorded, regardless of where
it actually is (ie recording metadata kept).
Yeah, I can hear it now... 'He just runs it yesterday and already he

Hi list,

My mythbox is deleting recordings on me, even though I have auto-expire
off, there's enough room on the disk, and there is no episode max.

I cannot find any log information for why the files are being deleted.
However, it seems to happen in the late morning, which is when
mythfilldatabase runs.

Is there something going on in here that would also delete recordings?
Is there anyway I can figure out what the heck is going on? I even
reformatted and reinstalled everything (FC4, 18.1) and I'm still having
the deleting-stuff-after-a-day-or-so problem.

Myth can only record 1 show per tuner card and watching LiveTV counts as
recording since it is doing exactly that so you can pause it, etc.
Since you require a cable box per tuner card for your service, then yes,
it looks like you will. My cable doesn't require me to use a cable box
so I have 2 tuners in my system with a simple splitter and can record or
watch at the same time, etc.

Only for a decoder box, and then only if you want both capture sources
to have access to digital channels. You can also split the line before
it goes into the decoder box and feed one directly into a capture
card. The line without the box will still get the alanog channels
(generally 01 through about 70 or so). You can configure the capture
sources so that Myth knows that source 1 deals with all channels and
source 2 only deals with analog channels.

Hauppage PVR x50 (500). It's not exactly cheap, but there is no cheap
card that does hardware encoding. The PVR cards, however, are the best
supported, so will take the least time to get running.

> Display Card (GeForce FX 5200 S-VIDEO or DVI out)

We'll come back to this, although it is a very good card. (I have one
-- look for the version with a heatsink rather than a fan if noise is
a factor. I haven't seen any higher-model Nvidia cards without a fan.

The Hauppage cards (non-MCE flavors I believe) have included remotes
and IR dongles, though the cord is only about 1 meter long. We'll come
back to this in a bit.

Here's where you're going to have a problem with the box being behind
you. S-video cables are not cheap, and DVI cables are even more
expensive. I've never seen one long enough to do what you want to with
it -- they're usually only around a meter long, and I've never seen
one longer than about two meters. You're not going to be able to run
an out to the TV from your Myth box with one of these unless the Myth
machine is next to the TV.

This also ignores audio, since DVI and S-vid (AFAIK) only deliver the
video signal. You'll need another long cable to get the audio from the
soundcard to your TV (assuming it supports audio-in) or to another
amplification source. You'll also need a way to get the audio from the
converter box into the capture card.

If you want to use coax, you'll need to look at the PVR 350 card,
which does hardware MPEG decoding and supports coax out. A caveat,
though: this card decodes MPEG 2, but not MPEG 4. You may have trouble
playing compressed video (divx, xvid, etc) out of this card, and, as I
understand, it is difficult to get X working properly. The 350
(reportedly, I've never used one) has very good quality for live and
recorded TV, but is problematic for playing back things that come from
outside MythTV.

Another possibility, though, is to put an old VCR next to your Mythbox
and connect the S-vid and audio cables to that, and then run a coax
(which carries both video and audio) to your TV. This is how I did my
original set up, since the TV I was using had only a coax-in.

This, however, doesn't solve the problem with the remote control --
you'd still need a really long USB cable to put the remote next to the
TV, and long USB cables are more expensive than you might think.

> The IR remote controls MythTV and when I change the channel the
> IR Transmitter changes my SA2100 box's channel.

Yes, but you'll probably want the IR blaster as close to the decoder
box as you can get it, and even then there will be some delay when
changing channels in live TV. But Myth is not built for channel
surfing, and the ring buffer only contains the channel currently
selected -- you can't switch channels and then rewind the new channel
to a point before you switched.

The fx5200 supports dual-head operation, but it will take extra
configuration of xorg.conf to get running properly. But it still won't
solve the problem of how you are going to get an S-vid or DVI cable
long enough to do what you want.

You'll need a separate capture input for each stream you want Myth to
work with. With one input you can watch live TV, OR watch something
currently recording, OR record something while watching something
previously recorded. If you want to record two things at one, or watch
live TV while recording a different program, you'll need a second
capture input. The PVR 500 has two capture inputs in one card.

>What if I add a MythTV box to the DVR?

Not sure what you mean by this. What is the DVR box, and how does it
deal with two streams simultaneously? If it's an MCE machine, you can
get it running Myth, but you'll have to make sure the hardware
(particulary the capture device) is comaptible. If it's a Tivo or a
cable-provided box, it won't do any good in Myth.

But if you have the machines, and really want to run the Myth b

Default profile and LiveTV (and Hi and low quality if you use them)

( Utils/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Recording Profiles -> MPEG-2

[mythtv-users] OT: Probably dumb question about digital sound out

2005-09-03 Thread Ryan Steffes
Digital audio is digital audio, correct?  As in the the sound in
the source defines the number of channels, not the hardware?  I'm
finally getting the stereo I want (I love my wife, best birthday
present ever!) with digital in and all that, but my computer doesn't
have digital out.  I've had some motherboard wonkiness anyway, so
I was considering just replacing the motherboard and getting one with
digital out and a gigabit ethernet port, such as the ASUS A7N8X-E
Deluxe.  The motherboard advertises as "6 Channels" which I assume
they mean 5.1.  My stereo is going to be 7.1, but the digital out
on the motherboard will do just fine, right?  There's not a
difference on the digital side because it's a straight pass through,
correct?

[mythtv-users] Upgraded to 0.18.1, having ivtv, mythfrontend problems

2005-09-03 Thread Alex Harford
I recently upgraded my mythtv box, and I'm having a few problems. I
went from FC3 to FC4 using yum, and then upgraded mythtv-suite to
0.18.1 by pointing yum to the ATrpms repository.

This is on a Pundit-R box that was previously working great once it
got set up, but I wanted to get the time scale feature, so I upgraded.

Here's the list:

1) IVTV volume

It wants to set the PVR-350 volume to 64845 when it starts recording a
new show, which is causing distortion because the volume is so high.
Turning it down during playback results in quieter, but still
distorted audio.

Previously I set it in /etc/rc.local with this command:

/usr/bin/ivtvctl -y volume=58950

and things worked just fine.

Has anyone encountered this before? I only had 1 hit for '64845 ivtv'
in google. :(

2) Realtime priority would require SUID as root.

I get a message in mythfrontend's logfile that "Realtime priority
would require SUID as root." I set mythfrontend to be suid root with
the 'chmod u+s /usr/bin/mythfrontend' but it didn't seem to do
anything.

ls -l `which mythfrontend` results in:

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 1029600 Jun 27 19:00 /usr/bin/mythfrontend

3) Mythfrontend crashing

Occasionally mythfrontend will crash when pressing the Back/Exit
button, or when a show finished. I'm not sure what logging options to
enable for this one, running 'mythfrontend --verbose general' didn't
put any useful messages in the logfile. Any suggestions on how to
track this down would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Of sortsTry this. Set up so your xserver does NOT start up at boot.
This will give you a runlevel 6 session with no display manager (ie, you
will see a black tty1 login prompt.

Login, then, run startx.

The xserver will load and you will be left at your messed up screen. Use
CRTL-ALT-F1 to switch back to tty1.
You will see the messages put out by/from xorg.conf as it starts up..

I suspect you may see what I have been getting: invalid module format...

Hmmm I get this same clipping problem using a PVR250. But - it only

comes in here and orchestrates it all, I connect my display card to my
TV. The IR remote controls MythTV and when I change the channel the
IR Transmitter changes my SA2100 box's channel.

This is my understanding, though I've been warned off of having two
separate devices for receiver and transmitter.

This all that correct? Also, the MythTV box will be running on my main
system, so will I be able to use my desktop as it is and MythTV with
the same graphics card?

Um. My guess is that this would be a bad idea unless you're talking really
light activity. Obviousy no gaming but also, I would think, no
disk-intensive stuff. Nothing that would impair the I/O systems being used
by Myth. You don't mention how powerful a machine you're using, either.

Also, you say the system will be behind you? Are you running the s-video
cable across your room? Isn't there degradation that occurs over distance?

The timezone thing did it. I made the timezone on my frontend the same as

[mythtv-users] Did I get this right? (Set-Up)

2005-09-03 Thread Andrew Balmos
Hello,

I just want to make sure that I got all this right before I go and buy
all the components to make it work...

This is my set up:
SA2100 Digital Cable Box (S-VIDEO out)
Capture Card (need to buy, is there a cheap one that just does S-VIDEO
would like hardware encoding)
Display Card (GeForce FX 5200 S-VIDEO or DVI out)
IR Remote (need to get, the card will be behind me so I need one with
a long cord I can run across the room)
IR Transmitter (build on from lirc (will it go say 20 - 25ft?))

This is how it all comes together:
I use a S-VIDEO Cable to connect my SA2100 to my capture card, MythTV
comes in here and orchestrates it all, I connect my display card to my
TV. The IR remote controls MythTV and when I change the channel the
IR Transmitter changes my SA2100 box's channel.

This all that correct? Also, the MythTV box will be running on my main

Thank you!,

[mythtv-users] Help with pcHDTV 3000 Card w/NTSC Configuration

2005-09-03 Thread Patrick Carlson
Hello.  I have a pcHDTV 3000 card installed and I'm trying to set
it up for an NTSC signal input.  I've tried both the V4L drivers
and DVB.  I believe both of them are loaded right now.  Will
this cause conflicts?  The reason I ask is because when I go into
MythTV and choose pcHDTV 3000/2000 in the Cards area... nothing shows
up under video device or default input.  I can kill the backend
and choose DVB card but it seems stuck on ATSC format which won't work
for me.  I run ./dtvsignal /dev/video0 and it switches over to
NTSC but it still doesn't help.  All I'm getting is black and
white static.  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in
advance! :)

Sounds like an mplayer build issue. You probably don't have the right
supporting libraries installed when you built it.

mplayer plays my nuv files here (both mpeg4 and mpeg2 variants) and
should be able to play the MPEG1/2/4/MJPEG files the linux driver
supports.

As for the naming issue - my solution went as follows:

I transcode using nuvexport into a tree:

/foo/videos/from_tv//disc/

and delete the original from the recordings list.

When each disk directory reaches 4.7G, I burn a DVD.

Then I replace the episode files with a symlink
to /media/cdrecorder//disc/

Finally, to keep the video manager from deleting the dangling symlinks,
I create a zero length dummy file at the right place under the DVD mount
point without a DVD mounted.

It has its downsides - the video manager isn't quite as easy to trawl
through as the recordings list, and there are some manual steps, but it
works for me, as it is fairly rare I watch older recordings, and when I
do, I usually just play the file from the DVD with mplayer.

Myth does have an internal transcoder, but I never did get it working
nicely when I first tried (many moons ago).

> Combine that with offline archive knowledge and it would not
> record an episode which is already recorded, regardless of where it

If myth records the file, it does store the entry in the database and
doesn't re-record, unless you pick the 'Delete and allow re-record'
option from the media menu, or didn't have duplicate detection
configured as part of your original recording settings.

Finally - I hope you have lots of fun with Myth.

Cheers,

Mark

[mythtv-users] VIA XvMCvld

2005-09-03 Thread Dirk Aust
Hi all,
I have a VIA EPIA M1 with a CLE266 using the HW MPEG2 decoder with the
XvMCvld extension, with the old 2.6.8.1 it works, but when I use the brand
new 2.6.13 kernel only the top half of the screen is used when loading the
mythfrontend, even using the drm.ko and via.ko from UNICHROME project, it's
the same, I get no error messages in the Xorg.log or in
the /var/log/messages. And furthermore when I starting a simple xdm screen it
also works.

Anybody made the same expieriences?

That's only a partial solution. I've said this before, but I'll say

While we're repeating ourselves ;-), I never want farting around
with channel surfing to interfere with a well planned schedule.
The reason I implemented this was as a stop gap to stem the tide
of counter-productive suggestions that would put scheduled programs
at the mercy of happenstance.

If you have different quality tuner cards, this option will make live
TV use the lowest quality tuner.

Correct. The default behavior for selecting a card for live TV is
to first check if there is an available card on the same hostname
as the requesting mythfrontend so that the data will be streamed
locally. If there is not a local tuner, choose the lowest numbered
(highest quality) card.

The scheduler chooses the lowest numbered card for the highest
priority shows and uses the second input for a source when another
lower priority show overlaps and so on. Different backend machines
may have different resources available. Different models of cards
may be in the mix and different signal quality may be coming from
different coax cables. Therefore, it is in the user's best interest
to configure their best quality recorded as card 1 and the most
questionable as card N.

What this option does is to ignore the hostname and choose the
highest numbered card available for live TV. If there are three
inputs for a single source, this would always choose card 3 unless
it was busy. Card 3 would never be asked to record a scheduled show
until there were three overlapping recordings, in which case, you
couldn't use a live buffer anyway. Otherwise, one or two recordings
can start while the ringbuffer continues.

If the cards and signals were truly identical on a single host
then, yes, this should be turned on by default. However, if you have
different resources on different hosts, this would always go to the
poorest card and possibly across the network unnecessarily.

In the bigger picture, the vast majority of DVR users eventually
find that they can effortlessly choose to record all the shows they
like to see. When they turn on the tube, they can choose to watch
the shows they look forward to seeing (from the beginning passing
over sections they are not interested in watching). This is in place
of old habits of flipping through channels hoping to find something
'good' on and watching from somewhere in the middle.

Eventually, the behavior of A/V test mode =) becomes insignificant.
While the live TV mode should behave reasonably, it should not be
allowed to interfere with the most important service of a DVR. That
is, to record the shows which the user has planned to record.

I've been bringing up an AMD64 machine over the last couple of days.
I'm Gentoo based here and using the 64-bit kernel. I'm having no
trouble playing Myth's nuv files right off my Myth NFS server using
mplayer. mplayer (or Gnome) is accepting the nuv file type. Certainly
the name part is unfriendly for this sort of video browsing.

The picture looks quite good. I've not tested audio yet.

[mythtv-users] ConvertX SVHS input and Exporting

2005-09-03 Thread Andrew Taylor
Hello all. Finally played with mythtv yesterday. Excellent, but now I
need a new hard drive (or two).

I do have a few things I can't figure out, however. How do I choose
svhs input for the ConvertX? I've set default input to svhs in
mythsetup->capture cards->go7007, and given Composite a lower priority
than S-Video in mythsetup->input connections, but it still only records
over composite.

Also, how does one go about exporting .nuv for backup on removable
media? I can't play .nuv directly with mplayer (unsure if this is an
amd64 issue), and the naming is unfriendly. Is it possible to re-encode
to a .avi, rename and still maintain the link into the media browser?

What would be really nice is to have the myth data sitting in the
transport header (ie ogg fields or similar) so that archived myth
recordings could be identified and external myth recordings could be
integrated (ie this file was dl'd and it's this program, which is
scheduled, but I now have this episode, so no need to record this
episode). Combine that with offline archive knowledge and it would not
record an episode which is already recorded, regardless of where it
actually is (ie recording metadata kept).

Yeah, I can hear it now... 'He just runs it yesterday and already he
wants a CMS'. heh. Thanks,

Andy

Sure, that's understandable. Maybe a cool solution in the future could
be a message that pops up telling me the system has put me on a
different tuner so that recording could use the one I was using, etc.,
would be cool.

[mythtv-users] dsm-320

2005-09-03 Thread Ian Jackson

Hi All,

This question seems to come up now and then.. I have a dlink dsm-320,
and I'm trying to get it to play files from my mythbox. I'm running
Knoppmyth 5A16. On the back end end i have a pvr250. I have enabled the
CyberLink package
and the dsm can see it. The list of shows comes up, but when you try to
launch them, it says "file not found".

I'm not trying to determine a)is the file really not found? b)for some
reason, can it not play myth content? or c)is this a dsm-320 oddity.

has anybody else had similar experiences? what upnp units have people
gotten working with myth? i'm not sure where to start my debugging
process. I know this unit works with windows based upnp software.

That's only a partial solution. I've said this before, but I'll say
it again. I have a more complete solution sketched out. However,
since live TV is a very low priority to me, I may never get to it. If
someone else wants to take a stab at it though, I'd be happy to coach
them through it.

Can this solution be used to make Myth to also "know" which card that gets
a channel at best quality? I.e. I get one channel on a satellite card and
the channel on a terristical broadcast recieving card, since the quality is
better on my satelltite card I would prefer to use that card for recording
and the other on for live tv. Is it even possible to make Myth only show
the channel one time in the channel list even though Myth "knows" that it
is from two separate feeds? I have five channels that I get on both cards.

In the channel editor, increase the priority for the channels on the
better quality source you prefer to have recorded from.

To have MythTV only show 1 copy of a channel you get from multiple
sources, you need to make the NAME and CALLSIGN fields the same if I
remember correctly (and obv the xmltvid). I also have the CHANNUM
field the same for multiple copies. For example, in the UK I have 3
'copies' of BBC1 on cable, DVB and analogue. I've got CHANNUM=101,
NAME=BBC ONE, and CALLSIGN=BBC1. Make using mythweb much quicker as
you only see 1 entry for BBC1. Settings priorities for the recording
cards and individual channels takes care over which card will record
which channel.

I'm sugguesting it may be some combination of capture card and driver
because the capture card has to pass the audio through to the sound
card's in. If it's not the sound card responsible for the distortion,
then maybe it's the pass-through.

Or could it even be a bum cable?

That's only a partial solution. I've said this before, but I'll say

since live TV is a very low priority to me, I may never get to it. If

If you have different quality tuner cards, this option will make live

[mythtv-users] MSI Mega PC 865 PRO with a CX23880/1/2/3 card

2005-09-03 Thread Gunther C.
Hi!

I got as a present a MSI Mega PC 865 PRO and I ve got some big problems.
First, it has a CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (14f1:8800)
which doesnt get recognised by the cx8800 driver (configuring it as
generic), so I patched a little bit the cx88-cards.h (without knowing
what I am doing). But know I can watch 3 channels in a very poor quality
via /dev/v4l/video0 and not via /dev/dsb.

Next thing is the IR-device. I can use the remote to turn the computer
on, but cant find it with lshw and thus not knowing how to configure it.

What makes me crazy is the fact that this computer gets shipped with a
special linux which occupies 200 MB and provides basic function like cd
playing and TV, but I am not able to mount its partition to see what
they are using. They do get the devices to work with linux, I dont.

Thanks for any help,
Gunther

You set it up to go from the dish to the DirectTiVo (for decryption)
then out the DirectTiVo's S-Video (or composite) output to the PVR-500's
S-Video input.

You'll need a separate DirectTV receiver for each tuner on the PVR-500
you want to feed with satellite channels (so, you'd probably need 2
DirectTV receivers).

Also, the DirecTiVo won't be doing you much good, so you might be able
to see if you can swap it out for a standard receiver to save the $5/mo
(or $6/mo if you're a new user) DirecTiVo fee. That should just cover
the cost of an additional receiver. However, if you end up getting a
3rd PVR card, you'll need a 3rd DirecTV receiver...

[mythtv-users] Commell LV-667D - DVI working?

2005-09-03 Thread Joel Anderson
Hi all,

Looking at this booard for a small diskless frontend with DVI out for
my DLP set. Only big requirements are SD playback over the DVI for
now, but hoping to allow for HD playback and spdif out for the future.

Also considering something like the Pundit-R, which I beleive has
everything I need but the case is a bit too deep to fit in my tv
stand. Any other suggestions?

TIA!

2005-09-03 Thread Michael Cowell

Sorry,

I forgot to mention that I am using mythtv 0.18.1.20050510-1, installed
via Gentoo's portage (Gentoo calls this 0.18.1-r2). I imagine you would
all want to know that :-)

Michael Cowell wrote:

Hi all,

I am also experiencing a problem like this. I have the following setup:

AMD Duron 1 GHz
384 MB SDRAM
Twinview DVB-T capture card
Pinnacle PCTV bt878 based capture card
SBLive! emu10k1 based audio card

Linux distro is Gentoo. Kernel version is 2.6.12-gentoo-r8. I am using
unpatched V4L.

Obviously the popping / clicking occurs only with the analog card.

You might think my box is outdated, that's because it is!
Interestingly I had this same hardware running MythTV 0.15 a while
ago, also with Gentoo and a 2.6 series kernel (I think it was around
2.6.2 back then), but there was no clicking.

My CPU does not max out when doing analogue recording. I have tried
ALSA and OSS, and have changed recording levels extensively. This did
not fix the issue.

I don't mind the popping too much because I only use the analogue card
when the digital one is busy.

I mention this because it seems to me that my experience indicates that:

1. This does not appear to be a hardware fault (I had clear audio
going using this hardware before software upgrade).
2. This does not appear to be a capture card problem (my capture card
is different to Sergio's, at both the board and chipset level).
3. The emu10k1 chipset is a common factor here. Maybe that is the
problem. I imagine the driver has had a lot of work since 2.6.2.

If I can provide any more information please let me know. This problem
interests me because I can't see a clear reason for it occurring. The

Hello everyone!

I'm probably one of the very few people left with a non-PVR analog
card (a simple Hauppauge WinTV Go, based on cx8800). The audio goes
from the TV card to the sound card via a simple external stereo
cable, as I'm sure is the case in many setups out there.

Now, I have been having a problem with audio on my MythTV since I
installed it yesterday: I get a lot of crackling and popping in my
recordings and in LiveTV. I've been running several tests.

Outside MythTV:
- The audio gets to the sound card in great quality: if I turn on
playback of the line-in channel, the sound is perfect
- It is also not the recording hardware of the sound card that is
ruining the sound, as both "record" and "arecord" record perfect sound
- "record" and "arecord" still record perfect sound with high CPU
and disk loads
- "record" and "arecord" record perfect sound whether or not video
is playing (with XawTV, for instance)
- If I start recording sound then start mythfrontend and select
"Watch TV", it won't get any sound (understandable, the device is
busy), but the "record" or "arecord" program will keep on recording,
and the sound is, once again, perfect

- Recorded MythTV shows play with crackling in mplayer

Inside MythTV:
- The amount of crackling (or at least the loudness) goes up with
the loudness of the broadcast; if it's quiet there's almost no
crackling, but if there are a lot of people talking or loud sounds,
there is a lot of crackling

- Happens with ALSA and OSS
- Happens with MJPEG and MPEG4
- Happens with or without "Agressive Sound Buffering"
- Happens with both WAV and MP3, at any of the available rates
- Happens with or without internal volume controls, at any level
- Music and videos play without any problems
- The amount of crackling goes up with the quality of the video;
there is almost no crackling at 160x160, but a lot of it at 768x576

So, given all this I think we can rule out any interference on the
sound from external sources, hardware or other software, and assume
the problem is limited to the TV functionality in MythTV. My guess
would be that the sound is being clipped due to volume adjustments
inside MythTV, and is only then recorded, assuming that MythTV does
some volume processing on the sound (even if just boosting it).

Now, this is all fine and well and a good theory until the last
point. I don't understand why the problem gets worse with higher
video resolutions. That completely ruins my theory. With that in
mind, I guess the problem could only be some kind of multiplexing or

2005-09-03 Thread Michael Cowell

Hi all,

I am also experiencing a problem like this. I have the following setup:

AMD Duron 1 GHz
384 MB SDRAM
Twinview DVB-T capture card
Pinnacle PCTV bt878 based capture card
SBLive! emu10k1 based audio card

Linux distro is Gentoo. Kernel version is 2.6.12-gentoo-r8. I am using
unpatched V4L.

Obviously the popping / clicking occurs only with the analog card.

You might think my box is outdated, that's because it is! Interestingly
I had this same hardware running MythTV 0.15 a while ago, also with
Gentoo and a 2.6 series kernel (I think it was around 2.6.2 back then),
but there was no clicking.

My CPU does not max out when doing analogue recording. I have tried ALSA
and OSS, and have changed recording levels extensively. This did not fix
the issue.

I don't mind the popping too much because I only use the analogue card
when the digital one is busy.

I mention this because it seems to me that my experience indicates that:

1. This does not appear to be a hardware fault (I had clear audio going
using this hardware before software upgrade).
2. This does not appear to be a capture card problem (my capture card is
different to Sergio's, at both the board and chipset level).
3. The emu10k1 chipset is a common factor here. Maybe that is the
problem. I imagine the driver has had a lot of work since 2.6.2.

If I can provide any more information please let me know. This problem
interests me because I can't see a clear reason for it occurring. The
distortion "sounds analogue" (like clipping / RF interference), but DSP
is so advanced these days that this could easily be a digital hardware /
software issue.

H. This may be the problem, because the things you mention above
don't use V4L, at least not that I'm aware of.

Well, I really doubt it's the cx8800 driver's fault, since MythTV does
not get the audio from it, but instead from the soundcard. The sound
goes from the TV card to the sound card via an external patch cable, and
is apparently fine when it reaches the sound card, as my numerous
attempts to play and record it under different conditions have hopefully
shown.

So about the only thing that's left is V4L (which AFAIK is used for
dumb capture rather than hardware encoding) and the card itself.
Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with V4L or with your card.
However, I suspect that this is the source of the problem. You may be
right that it's a multiplexing issue, but if so, it's a result of
driving your particular card with your particular version of V4L.

Still, I don't see how v4l can be affecting the sound in MythTV, since
MythTV only gets video from v4l...

Unfortunately, There's not much I can tell you. I can say that
replacing the card with a PVR x50 (which doesn't use V4L) will
probably get rid of your problem, but that means spending money.
Others may be able to help more.

Well, I realize that non-PVR cards are not so spectacular, but I was
hoping it would be enough for watching and recording TV, at least with a
fast computer, which should be able to do things in software. Maybe I'll
have to consider that option, though...

Completely out of the blue, but is it possible that there is an
NTSC/PAL problem -- like using an NTSC capture card on a PAL signal?
It's a longshot, but I'm only trying to give you ideas.

No, from what I know these cards work with both PAL and NTSC, and anyway
this card was bought in Europe, which is PAL-only. Still, if everything
else except for MythTV works fine...

Thanks, you've been a lot of help, really... I've ran a few more tests I
couldn't think of after reading your comments, like testing full-duplex.
I still haven't found the problem, but hopefully I'm narrowing it down.
I'm also going to run a few other tests tomorrow. I have an older PC
with a BTTV card, and I'll set MythTV up there. I'll see if that one
gets any crackling, if it plays recordings from this PC with or without
crackling, and also if this PC plays recordings from the other one with
or without any crackling. That will hopefully narrow it down to either
playback or recording.

Maybe I'll also try swapping TV cards and seeing what happens.

How about crackling on .mp3/wav playback using XMMS or similar player?
ALSA? OSS? (That is, independent of the patch cable from TV card to

My SBLive! (snd-emu10k1) crackles as described, using ALSA, but not OSS.
Specifically, the crackling or 'tapping' sound only occurs when there's
actual wave output, not during silence.

I found similar complaints on the web (mostly Windows-centric forums)
but was unable to find a solution. Sadly, I opted to just use my onboard
sound for Myth, and OSS for the SBLive.

[mythtv-users] Can't get jump points working

2005-09-03 Thread Sim
Hi
I'm trying to set up a jump point. I seem to have got mythweb up and running.
It does ask for any authorisation but it seems to save my settings - I'm
trying to set up a jump point for DVD - I've tried Ctrl+D and V - but nothing
seems to happen.

On mythweb I have the option to set key bindings for localhost, pvr, or
pvr.thuis.be all of which are the same computer. Only for the latter do the
settings not seem to get saved.

I'm expecting that the following time i launch mythfrontend that when I type
Ctrl+D / V then it should go straight to that part of the menus but in
practice nothing is happening.

Can anyone help?

[mythtv-users] [semi-OT] PAL and Nvidia 6600GT cards

2005-09-03 Thread Matthew Moore

Hi all

Long time lurker, first time poster so please go easy ;-)

I have been trying for quite some time to get my 6600GT video card to send
valid PAL timings to my television. I am using the included component-out
dongle and whilst I can quite happily use the low resolution PAL
configurations in the Windows drivers (about 480p I would guess) it seems
impossible to force 1080i to 25/50hz. Powerstrip does not support custom
timings for TV-OUT and whilst I have found some sample modelines for my
television on various forums the card seems to corrupt them. My guess is
that it forces timings to NTSC 30/60hz as this is the behaviour in Windows.

Has anyone successfully used an Nvidia 6600GT for PAL 1080i, and if so
what was the trick? Otherwise can anyone please recommend a card that has
integrated component out and is proven for PAL 1800i use?

Many thanks in advance,

Matt.

No problem whatsoever. Every modern distro will deal with LAN
painlessly, and out of the box -- either manually configured or via
DHCP. This is on the OS level. Remember that Linux was originally
started as a means to connect with UNIX over a network. The network is
a core function of Linux, and Linux without a network is a bicycle
without wheels.

> 2) Is samba within mithv?

Yes, in Linux, not Myth -- see above. However, the only reason to use
Samba (that I can see) is to share files between *nix systems and MS,
and that is only because of the latter's failure to deal with the far
superior NFS standard. Please note, however, that NFS/Samba is not
necessary for viewing live TV or recordings between a remote frontend
and backend -- there is a built-in protocol for that. It is useful,
however, for sharing stored audio and non-Myth-generated video files
over your LAN and to non-*nix machines.

This is a bit more tricky. The theoretical answer is yes, absolutely.
Linux uses open standards, so there's nothing in Linux to prevent this
from happening. But as Yogi Berra said, "In theory, there's no
differene between theory and practice, but in practice there is."

Frankly, WLAN can be a royal pain in the ass in Linux. I don't have
experience with USB options, only PCI and PCMCIA. For each of those,
it took a week of research to find good cards (look for Prism
chipsets, although there are other chipsets that work natively as
well. Avoid Broadcom).

Also, be aware that sending video around a network uses A LOT of
bandwidth and requires low latency, so you may run into problems with
WLAN, no matter how compatible it is.

The easy answer to getting WLAN working is a package called
ndiswrapper, which acts as a sort of API translator -- it fools a card
into thinking it's on MS, and lets you use the MS drivers to run your
card in Linux.

It works, but I have real philosophical problems with it -- namely
that it doesn't address the core problem of manufacturers not
supporting Linux, and doesn't give them any incentive to release Linux
drivers.

Also, ndiswrapper will not support advanced features of wireless
cards, such as monitor mode -- letting your card only listen to all
channels simultaneously. This isn't necessary for MythTV or for web
browsing, but comes in very handy for finding wireless networks around
you and for penetration testing/security auditing. There are simply no
tools under MS that do what Kismet and other Linux tools do, and the
Linux tools will not work with a card using ndiswrapper.

> 4) Does Mythv or better Linux at all support USB Bluetooth adapters?
> -See 3 and 5 for my reasons.

Yes, but I can't really give you more information. However, bluetooth
drivers are included with pretty much every standard distro, if you
choose to install them. I have no bluetooth devices, so can't comment
on how well they work.

> 5) Can I add other Linux programs to Mythv on my own (I'm not a Linuxer,
> but do not hide myself for compiling ;-)?

Absolutely. It is also probable that you won't need to compile,
although it is somehow more satisfying that way (and really not all
that hard).

> -I would like to add a Bemused server, controlling XMMS from my
> bluetooth phone. I did this under windows and it worked incredibly!!!

Sounds nifty, but what do you do when you're setting up a playlist and
your phone rings? Why not just use a remote? Linux has very solid
support for remote controls through lirc.

> USB WLAN adapter (NETGEAR WG111TGR USB 108 MBit would be my favorite,
> but did not find any linux related websites!?)

A big caveat on Netgear WLAN stuff (though not exclusively Netgear):
they have a habit of changing chipsets while keeping the same model
number. The only way to tell the chipset (without buying the card and
trying it) is to search the box for a v number, which is not always
easy to find, and can sometimes be wrong.

A couple months ago I bought a Netgear PCI WLAN card that was
mislabeled -- IIRC the box said v2 or 3, meaning fully-supported Prism
chip, but the actual card was a v4 and had an unsupported Broadcom
chip.

I guess the moral of the story is that pretty much any old LAN card
will work, but you really need to do your homework before buying a
WLAN card. If just getting it working is your only goal, then
ndiswrapper can certainly help, but I needed direct control over the
driver, which ndiswrapper does not allow.

Also, I was unhappy with the performance of Myth over a WLAN (albeit
802.11b), and so run all my Myth connections over cat5, even though
the internet link is WLAN. Note that a Linux box has no problem

In my case it doesn't matter for MythTV as the backend is running as root
anyway.

Its generally a bad idea to use multiple ir devices on a single machine.

I would imagine so.

It is possible to chain lirc (have two instances of lirc - one for
receive

one for transmit) but I wasn't able to get it to stabilizeit was
also a MAJOR pain to setup.

Hmmm. Well, I was hoping that the Audigy break-out box would do both. So,
it's a problem even when the transmitter is run across to the device to be
controlled and taped to the sensor (as I see lot of)?

My suggestion would be to get a IR device that receives and transmits (I
use the USB UIRT www.usbuirt.com) which allows you to send and receive
with the same device and Lirc Instance. Once you have your device - they
generally

work with ANY remote - use irrecord to setup the remote of your choice.

Yeah, that probably saves a lot of heartache.

If all your interested in receiving IR commands - your audigy is probably
supported (do a google search for audigy LIRC).

It does appear to be.
