Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Re: Re: Playback colors wrong, looks like blue filter

2006-01-03 Thread Ian Butler

Its fixed and working ok now.

For anyone else who might have a similar problem, I disabled xv in mythtv:
run mythfrontend
select "Utilities / Setup" -> "Setup" -> "TV Settings" -> "Playback" ->
"Next"
On this screen uncheck "Use Xv picture controls" and save this. You will
need to restart myth or computer?

Thanks for the help though Fedor.

Thanks for the info. Doing this revealed something interesting:

If I startup the machine and then launch:
mplayer -vo xv /home/icbu/Desktop/comedy.avi

and the colors are fine. If I then run:

mythfrontend

and watch live Tv (colors wrong), then exit and run:

mplayer -vo xv /home/icbu/Desktop/comedy.avi

The colors are wrong.

x11 however works both before and afterwards (colors are fine):

mplayer -vo x11 /home/icbu/Desktop/comedy.avi

Any ideas?

Cheers.

[mythtv-users] Sound issues

2006-01-03 Thread Dylan R. Semler
So I have an hd-3000 card and a cable connecting the audio out of the
card to the audio in of my SB live sound card. From the documentation,
I gather that I'm supposed have the following settings:

Line is muted and captur is enabled
PCM is at a high volume
Master is at a high volume
Capture is muted, at a high volume, and captur is enabled

Yet when I do all of this I still cannot hear any sound. If I simply
un-mute the line in, then i will here the non-synced live-tv sound that
doesn't correspond with the video. I've read some people say that Line
must also be at zero volume, but changing it's volume has no effect.
ALSA is enabled and I've set my audio output device to ALSA:default in
the general setup of the frontend. I've also unchecked the box that
says "use internal volume controls" so that it is using an external
mixer. I have also tried this using the internal volume controls and
using /dev/dsp as my audio output device. None of these changes have
any effects.

tvtime has no sound (unless I un-mute the line-in)
aplay /dev/dsp results in a few underruns but eventually they die
out--no sound however.

Everyone else seems to be able to solve this problem so easily, what is
going on here!?!

Some people claim that enabling OpenGL causes their machine to lock
up. I seem to remember Daniel Kristjansson committing some fixes to
svn which *might* help with that. I have never personally had that
problem, so don't know.

Been so long since I ran .18 that I don't remember if there was a
checkbox back then. I see that you have opengl in your build configs,
so that might be good enough -- Based on your logs below, it is.

I have always installed nVidia drivers direct from nVidia's scripts:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

I assume those two packages are equivalent.

I don't know. Since version 7676 works pretty well for me, I did not
follow up on the problem.

Ouch! If I understand things correctly, "USleep with busy wait" is
the *Worst* option. If you cannot get OpenGL working, at least try to
get RTC working -- it is almost as good as OpenGL.

I am guessing that the GLX module did not get installed. Or, it is
the wrong version.

I have had problems in the past where an install of the nVidia drivers
failed because it was not able to successfully remove the previous
version. Once I hand-removed the previous version, then the install
succeeded. One way in which this manifested itself, is that the
driver seem to work, but would not load GLX.

I used to use a 440MX, and it worked Okay. My 5700LE works noticeably
better, for HD playback, however.

Mine only has the BIOS setting: "AC97 Audio" which can be set to "Auto"
or "Disabled". So no native mode... Alsa had no trouble loading the
drivers, and PCM audio worked just fine. It's just the AC3 audio that
doesn't work. If yours is working fine, can you post the 'lspci -v'
output and send me your asound.state and .asoundrc files?

[mythtv-users] ATOM Feed for new shows

2006-01-03 Thread Daniel Sheppard
Title: ATOM Feed for new shows

I got bored and whipped up a quick program that will generate an ATOM feed of programs that are new (ie. the same as Schedule --> Search Lists --> New Titles). A feed reader seems such a natural place to keep track of new titles.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~soxbox/shows.rb

It's written in ruby, and requires you to install the gems 'feedtools', 'builder' and 'mysql'. Change the variables at the top of the file to match your environment. If this scares you, don't come running to me for help.

I could pretend that I'd get around to converting this to PHP and adding it into mythweb, but this works for me, so I've got no more itch to scratch. Maybe one day I'll get bored again.

I should point out, this is for both the ALC850 on the K8n and the ALC655 on
my KN1.
Also, some boards have a BIOS setting where you can force the audio chipset
into their native mode or AC97 mode. I haven't come across this with the
Realtek chips, but it could still be out there on another motherboard. OR If
you see such a thing in your BIOS and your having trouble with your sound,
set it to AC97 mode an ALSA should detect it as an AC97 audio chip and load
the appropriate intel drivers.

RE: [mythtv-users] fusion hdtv 5 gold or lite?

2006-01-03 Thread Rob
I have both cards and they seem to work about the same, for analog and
digital. I'm not aware of a way to use the card to tune both analog and
digital, since there doesn't seem to be a way to tell Myth that the two
different interfaces are sharing one tuner. Someone can correct me if I'm
missing something, but when I set up both a V4L analog and a DVB source,
they fight with each other.

There is nothing unusual about tuning QAM with the Fusion lite. Cable QAM
has never been easier than it is with the current SVN version of Myth.
Just modprobe dvb-bt8xx with an appropriate kernel, configure the card in
Myth and do a scan. Since cable doesn't usually give you PSIP data you'll
have a bunch of "unnamed" channels you can surf through and find what you
want.

I should hope not! A 500Mhz PIII should do DVD res. MPEG-2. 256MB

You are correct. I should have mentioned that. That is one of the

At least two Nforce4 MB's (Biostar, Gigabyte) actually use Realtek

MB, neither of them would work with Myth and the nvidia drivers... I

I'd beware of NVidia chipset motherboards. NForce3 and NForce4 audio
capabilities aren't completely supported in Alsa. Especially if you're
thinking about using the SPDIF to do AC3...

As Kyle Rankin, author of the new "Linux Multimedia Hacks" (O'Reilly),
puts it, "It seems like a person's computer is becoming the multimedia hub
more and more these days. Even if you have some sort of portable device to
listen to music or watch videos, most of the time you end up doing your
ripping, encoding, and storage on your home PC." Linux has often been
overlooked for these types of applications, but multimedia programs under
Linux are getting more and more mature. The list of things you can't do
with free open source tools under Linux keeps getting shorter as the
multimedia tools get easier to use and more powerful.

Rankin's book, one of O'Reilly's popular "Hacks" series, contains a
hundred hacks to help readers get the best multimedia experience from
their computers. Topics covered include:

-Building a MythTV digital media hub that allows you to record television,
watch videos, listen to music, and even play classic arcade games
-Editing audio, video, and images, using both command-line and GUI tools,
 all of them free
-Managing your music collection by synchronizing your MP3 player and
 desktop and using dynamic playlists
-Creating and burning your own DVDs and VCDs
-Streaming audio and video over the Internet
-Syncing your digital camera to your PC to organize, touch up, and display
 your photographs

"Linux can be a great multimedia platform, once you learn how to use it,"
Rankin adds. "The problem is that documentation for these tools is often
scattered, incomplete, and in some cases overly complicated. Plus there
are plenty of great tools that few people have even heard of. 'Linux
Multimedia Hacks' puts all of this information in one place written in
plain English."

Agreed. I've been bitten by this one, migrating my quite-stable FC1 x86
myth box over to FC3 x86_64 a couple of years back. Over time it worked
out well, as Isaac is now running x86_64 so that works out quite nicely.
And the prerequisite packages to support FC3 and, subsequently, FC4,
have been released and field-tested. But back then...

Living on the bleeding edge can cause... well... bleeding... my advice
would be the same as that from Ross. FC4 and Jarod's guide is the
current sweet spot for a working, (relatively) easy-to-build config.

I had now have again the same problem. I was using LXM Suite to pull
off the second cable line-up. Now with there service ending / ended, I
will need to come up with a solution when I re-setup my new backend. I
think the only way around this will be to have two accounts, maybe
that can be added as an option in the backend config.

Does it not work for everyone due to hardware, or that it "just

Hmmm, I can't seem to find the OpenGL playback option. Just for a
sanity check, here's the version of myth I have installed with the
various USE flags (this is gentoo obviously):

media-tv/mythtv-0.18.1-r1 +alsa (-altivec) +arts -debug +dvb
-frontendonly -jack -joystick -lcd +lirc +mmx +nvidia +opengl
-oss -unichrome +vorbis

> Also, make sure you are running nVidia driver 7676 or *earlier*.

Okay, I downgraded my nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel versions:

media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4
media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6

I was using 8178, against many warnings I've seen on this mailing
list. My bad, I had a case of "this problem won't affect me"! At
any rate, that alone seemed to help the playback somewhat.

Regarding all the warnings I've seen about using the newer nvidia
drivers with mythtv, does anyone happen to know *why* such things
are broken with the newer drivers? Is nvidia aware of these
problems? Any feedback from them regarding fixes, etc?

I see that it says "GLX Video Sync extension not present"---does
this mean I've failed to configure something or does my hardware not
support it? I was under the assumption that my hardware *did*
support hardware OpenGL. I've got a Chaintech 7NIF2, which has the
integrated nvidia nv17-class gpu (GeForce4 MX).

An elegant hack, and I was about to suggest it when you
beat me to it. There may be more audio inputs (aux?) on
the mobo when you start digging around, but since
you don't need that one, and if the voltages are ok
(check the specs) its a cool solution.

OpenGL does not work for everyone. If it does work for you, then you
definately want it. OpenGL provides the smoothest video refresh
synchronization.

On your frontend, in Setup->TV Setting->Playback, the very first
screen should have an option to enable OpenGL.

When you run mythfrontend, you can invoke it like this:

mythfrontend -v playback -l /var/tmp/mythfrontend.log

After you start watching a show, look at the mythfrontend.log file,
and look for something like:

If the "Video Timing method" is not OpenGL, then you need to look at
the preceding statements to figure out why.

Also, make sure you are running nVidia driver 7676 or *earlier*.
Drivers after 7676 do not work correctly with OpenGL vsync.

Another key mapping discovery, CTRL+P does Play without Pause (ie. true Play,
none of this play or pause stuff).

in case anyone else has been looking for such a key mapping the last 2

[mythtv-users] Zap2It multiple sources same cable?

2006-01-03 Thread Steve Adeff
So I've got three sources from the same cable company, am I doomed to have to
have 3 logins?

1: HD Digital Cablebox via Firewire
2: SD Digital Cablebox via PVR-150
3: pcHDTV HD3000 cia QAM

all from Comcast. Now, each source requires its own specific channel lineup
and all three require a "Digital Cable" lineup to be selected.

The easiest would be to setup 1 zap2it source for all three and somehow tell
Myth which tuner gets what channels. But I don't think this is possible.

Any ideas?

FYI: hdparm -t /dev/hda

I'm still facing this problem. Along with the noticeable
"studdering" or "choppiness", I get lots of "prebuffering pause"
messages.

I re-compiled withOUT oss support, and am now using ALSA natively.
That did not help the situation. Also, while watching live TV,
according to top, mythfrontend is taking up about 20% of the CPU's
time, and X is taking about 10%.

As for the second problem, that seems to have magically worked
itself out. So I'm going to concentrate on this choppy audio
problem for the time being.

Any help is much appreciated!

Matt

Thats your problem right there. You rusing tveeprom.ko from the ivytv
drivers. (which don't support the bttv drivers) They are getting it
incorperated with v4l shortly so one of the next couple releases of the
kernel will not have this problem. (based on you using post 0.4.1 drivers)

Anywho, what you need to do is make sure you using the tveeprom.ko from
the kernel and not the ivytv drivers. Then it should detect both.
(kernels can deal with the 250 but ivytv's cant deal with the 3000) So
if you can find the old tveeprom.ko from the kernel and move the
tveeprom.ko out of the way from the ivytv drivers. You should be able to
reboot and it won't give you that messeage. (and work) Its what I have
to do to get my PVR-500, PVR-350 and HD-3000 working.

I agree that if you are limiting yourself to live tv and recordings,
then cle266 is the way to go. There are some bargain small form factor
boards out there with c3 800MHz and cle266 that are a lot cheaper than
the Epias. The only drawback is that none of them seem to have tv-out.
I recently set up a dedicated front end on a PC Chips M789CG with an
LCD monitor as display and it works perfectly. The only place it
chokes is in the program browser - the miniature live tv window
stutters a bit when browsing.

XBOX can't do HD, not enough CPU power. It can however handle outputting SD
material (up to 960x540p) to an HDTV. Does make a great cheap SD frontend

[mythtv-users] Mythtv redirecting to localhost

2006-01-03 Thread Jake Sanders
I just upgraded my mythtv and mythtvplugins installations (last upgrade was summer '05), and I am seeing something odd with mythweb.I have a web page (not on my myth server) with a link to mythweb on my myth server.  If I follow the link, it asks for my username and password (as usual), but then redirects me to "
http://127.0.0.1/mythweb".  Typing in the address in the address bar directoy (instead of following the link) works.  This wasn't a problem before my most recent upgrade.
I doubt this matters, but my service provider blocks incoming port 80, so I have to use port 8080 and have my router redirect it to port 80 on my myth server.  This worked fine before the upgrade.  Also, disabling htaccess doesn't seem to make a difference.

Been digging thru the FC4 guide on Jarod's site.
I have modified modules.conf based on the Alsa site for the PowerMac
sound chip.
They even had an .asoundrc file there.

Then I did this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ /usr/bin/aplay /usr/share/gok/goksound1.wav
ALSA lib conf.c:1596:(snd_config_load1) :51:1:Unexpected }
ALSA lib

may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
ALSA lib conf.c:2700:(snd_config_hooks_call) function
snd_config_hook_load_for_all_cards returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib pcm.c:1969:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM default
definition (id: default, value: cards.pcm.default)
aplay: main:544: audio open error: Invalid argument

Any help?

I also noticed that I have some dependencies issues.

Fedora core 5 expected out March 2006
http://fedora.redhat.com/About/schedule/

But... a newer OS distribution really has nothing to do with how well
mythtv works.

There certainly are disadvantages to running a "too new" distribution
with "too new" packages that don't quite work properly with mythtv (or
none at all ;)

Likewise, there are a number of advantages to running an older, well
debugged and supported distribution with a large population of content
users.

If you want to use Fedora and MythTV, I'd recommend FC4 and Jarod's guide.

Another choice is an AMD processor on an NVIDIA chipset basedmotherboard. I have been playing with an AMD Athlon64 3200 on an ASUS
A8N-VM CSM. Even without the NVIDIA XvMC support (it is broken in thedrivers for the motherboard chipset), it has not trouble with SD.

I should hope not!   A  500Mhz PIII should do DVD res.
MPEG-2.  256MB of RAM helps things along, but you can get by with
128.  If you need to do MPEG-4, something around 900Mhz is
probably necesary.

If you're using Asterisk, you'll need an X100P. Note that they're not
all created equal - I've had some 'clones' that won't do CID, while some
can. The genuine article should be fine, if you can get one.

If you're not using Asterisk, I think you have a wider choice. I
understand that most modern modems will decode CID, but I could be wrong.

Thanks Jon (and Michael),
I've found the The lirc documentation a little unclear with respect to
its hardware configuration, I thought perhaps it did and that is
probably the major area of difficulty I am experiencing.

Perhaps I'll do the serial IR receiver too. A chance to whip out the

Steve,
It's an interesting question. My feeling is that both good up to date
online documentation and print publication make sense. A couple of ideas
on the subject though.

Firstly I think it depends very much on what style of book it is that
you're writing. If it is a reference book then you're right, print
publication for a project as early in its lifecycle as MythTV would be a
mistake. If the book were more tutorial in nature, an introduction to
the whole concept with the aim of providing relevant background to
assist people interested in building their own MythTV installation I
think it'd have a more useful life-span. Subsequent editions could
provide a stronger focus on reference as the product matures.

Secondly, In my experience people are more likely to read a print
publication cover to cover. I was a founding member of the Linux
Documentation Project and maintained a number of HOWTO documents over a
number of years and I could tell from the number of questions I received
that despite the fact that the lifecycle of HOWTO document updates was
very fast-paced, a large percentage of readers weren't reading the
online version at all, despite the print version directing them to it.
People tend to read online documentation for reference: "I have a
question, I'll google for it, it turns up an online reference, I find
the answer to my question". If you want your reader to actually read
widely about a topic then I believe a print publication better serves
the purpose.

Terry

The Plextor doesn't do hardware encoding of the audio, it outputs

I had this problem as well with my PVR350 and TV Out on Fedora Core 4.

Here are some things to try:

I followed the following document for setup:

If you use Fedora Core 4, there is a paragraph about a bug in "urw-

Next, in the documentation from the mythtv site:

I also made changes some as per the section on "Overscan Dimensions".

[mythtv-users] Live TV looks odd after upgrade (and other stuff)

2006-01-03 Thread Eric Ladner
Recently went from 0.18.1 to SVN (Dec 31st,I think).

When I watch live TV (HD 16:9 TV) it looks like it's extremely
letterboxed - something like you'd see on a 2.0+ anamorphic DVD.
Previously it had bars on the side and filled the screen top to
bottom, now it's got BIG bars on the top and bottom and fills the
screen side to side.

Another strange one is I don't think it's switching to standard
640x480 (watch tv mode is configured differently than GUI mode).
Here's a few relavant lines from the frontend log:

2006-01-03 06:47:04.717 Opening audio device 'default'.
DisplaResX: XRRSetScreenConfigAndRate() call failed.
2006-01-03 06:47:05.001 SwitchToVideo: Video size 640 x 480: xrandr failed for 6
40 x 480
2006-01-03 06:47:06.011 Realtime priority would require SUID as root.
2006-01-03 06:47:06.026 TV: Changing from None to WatchingPreRecorded

Another thing I noticed today is I walked off and left a pre-recorde
show paused. Looks like about every 0.15 seconds (roughly) it printed
this in the log:

2006-01-03 06:56:54.511 WriteAudio: buffer underrun

Keep in mind the frontend was sitting in a paused previously recorded
show. There were a total of 366,959 messages printed in the log in a
period of 12.5 hours.

Enough for now. Can't say enough about MythTV. I'm slowly converting
all the folks at work over. :)

Re: [mythtv-users] Updating list of HDTV tuners for the HOWTO

2006-01-03 Thread Mudit Wahal
Brandon,

I do follow avsforum where they also discuss HDTV card lot more
compared to myth-users list. Only recently I've seen any activity
related to the HDTV tuners on myth-users.

I did got some help in pchdtv forums when I posted some questions
there and on this list last May. I did compare pros and cons of
various tuners when I was shopping for second tuner for my box. I'm in
San Jose, about 40 miles from Mt Sutro tower. After several users on
avsforum successfully reported Fusion Lite and Fusion Gold (both have
SAME LG HDTV tuner for digital broadcast, only the analog portion is
different), and the linux dvb drivers were ready, I ordered my card
from copperbox for $99 delivered. I also have LG LST 4200A, a HDTV
set-top box which I got in 2004. The Fusion cards are based on same
chipset. The LG set top box has excellent reception compared to
Samsung and other set-top boxes. So, the LG chipset is quite good for
digital reception. My friend across the street has ATI HDTV card using
Windows driver. I can tell you that its a hit-or-miss for him getting
any channel.

In my setup, I've an old antenna, about 20 ft high on single story
roof top. The wire is all chipped and chaffed and I cant replace as I
dont have any means to climb up and replace the wire. I've a 1-4
splitter connected to the old chipped wire. Then I attached a new RG6
100 ft cable to one end and a 1-2 splitter at the other end. The 2nd
splitter is feeding signal to the HD3000 and Fusion Lite 5 card. In
effect, I've only 1/8th of the signal being feed to both the cards.
Now, if you say the Fusion Lite card has issues, then I should not be
getting anything after so much signal degradation (40 miles away,
chaffed cable and 1/8th signal).

So, once again, it mostly depends on your line of site and setup.
FWIW, Fusion 5 Lite is quite acceptable for OTA usage, assuming you
dont have other major issues in your setup.

Thanks
Mudit

The Linux Network Administrators Guide pioneered OpenSource book
publication. The first edition was published both online by the Linux

When I did the 2nd edition we published it under the GNU Free

I agree wholeheartedly that a published free book is the right way to

could be a different version. basename holds the filename of the recording, so
look at your db and see what field holds this. mine references from the tv
recordings folder, so once you find your field see how it works before
continueing.

I'll look into it further to see if I can do a db version check.

as well, I can do some more intelligent name parsing if anyone has another
format they'd like to use.

[mythtv-users] Nuvexport to an Archos AV500?

2006-01-03 Thread Bret Schuhmacher
Hi all - Happy New Year!

I just received an Archos AV500, which says it'll play .avi files in
MPEG-4 Simple Profile with a soundtrack in MP3 or WMA format. I went
out and bought a Plextor PX-TV402U-NA USB tuner, which hardware encodes
avi in DivX and MPEG-4 (full specs at
http://www.plextor.com/english/products/PX-TV402Uadvancedtechspec.htm#).
I'm using the latest KnoppMyth for simplicity.

Ok, now my question... What's the simplest way to use Myth to get an
avi acceptable to the Archos AV500? I've recorded a few shows with
Myth, but trying to export the files via nuvexport fails because of a
parameter to ffmpeg, "-vcat", which isn't supported by my ffmpeg
(provided by KnoppMyth). I tried to update ffmpeg but nuvexport
disabled almost all my choices. I should probably build ffmpeg myself,
huh?

I wish I could just record and use the files directly instead of having
to transcode them (which seems to take as long or longer than the show
itself). Can the transcoding begin almost simultaneously with the
recording (i.e. the transcoding would start a few seconds after the show
starts recording, so it finishes almost simultaneously and I wouldn't
have to wait another hour or two at the end)?

Thanks for any tips.

Rgds,

Bret

If you're using Asterisk, you'll need an X100P. Note that they're not
all created equal - I've had some 'clones' that won't do CID, while some
can. The genuine article should be fine, if you can get one.

If you're not using Asterisk, I think you have a wider choice. I

Steve,

This is great! just one small problem.

Upon execution, it grabs the show info just fine from TV.com, but the query
fails with a message of

DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Unknown column 'basename' in 'field list' at
/root/tvgrabber-0.5.pl line 571, line 1.

apparently basename is a column in your mythconverg.recorded table, but not

Did you add the basename column to your db, or am I just using a different

He said he'd converted them to AVI. Then again, he didn't say which codec he
used for the conversion. If you have nuvexport (or whatever is doing the
conversion) use msmpeg4v2 for the video and MP3 for the audio, the resulting
file should play on any reasonably modern Windows system with no additional
codecs needed. There was another MPEG-4 option I was using for a short time,
but I had to hex-edit the video FOURCC in those files to make them playable.

Generally speaking, ffdshow is a nice thing to have. It'll handle most (all?)
of the video formats that a MythTV box will produce.

DSMyth is also nice to have. I don't stream to Windows much, but the shell
extension that lets you bring up titles & episode names in the "details" view
(and that adds tooltips with the same type of info to each file) is nice to
have when you're looking at a Samba-exported video directory.

I competely agree antenna, line of sight, cable and splitter quality
makes more of a difference than the tuner chip. The lite model I've
heard from several people here and other forums that compared to other
cards it doesn't do as well, and it's a slight larger difference than
what's found between other types of cards in the same situation.

I'm using the generation of the tuner chips, the multipath cancelation
in the chips, and the user feedback (I've followed most every one on
this list and other sites for over 2 years). I feel comfortable though
saying my thoughts are slightly more than just opinion. There are
certain areas that cause the bring the best or worst of the cards out.
Someone say in downtown new york is more likely to see the newest tuner
chips with better multipath cancelation do slightly better than someone
in the country. But then someone in the country with a bad splitter
could generate multipath that can faul up any tuner.

Geoff,

I just saw your thread on the HD3000 and am curious about the PVR-250
application? Are you saying that you don't need the ivtv driver for the
PVR-250's that it's already compiled into the kernel?

I'm having a problem getting my system to recognize 2 PVR-250's and wonder
if that might be the problem I'm running 2.6.1-14. I believe?

Thanks,

AJM,

NO! You have this backwards.

The PVR150/250/350/500 family use the ivtv modules which is loaded by
modprobe.conf (in Fedora).

You need:

alias char-major 81 videodev
alias char-major 81-0 ivtv
alias char-major 81-1 ivtv #for the second pvr250 card
#alias tveeprom tveeprom_ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400_ivtv etc (from memory)

(The cards will show up at /dev/video0 and /dev/video1)

The HD3000 card uses the cx88-dvb module. From about the 2.6.13 kernel,
the module has been available as a kernel level module. That is, it is
supplied with the kernel source and the kernel is compiled to make use of
it (either compiled in, or as a loadable module). To use the kernel
module, you need to re-compile your kernel to use the video for linux
modules. (But see below)

Both modules/drivers use a sub-module called tveeprom. These used to be
quite different and completely incompatible. From about October of this
year (and ivtv .40 or so) there has been an effective merger. The ivtv
modules will happliy use the kernel version tveeprom so that the
modprobe.conf line alias tveeprom tveeprom_ivtv can be commented out. This
makes the ivtv driver use the kernel version tveeprom. Then both hardware
cards use the same base module. You get errors if it is the other way
round. If necessary, the ivtv driver can be explicitly told to use the
tveeprom_ivtv driver.

If you just have a PVR card, then use the ivtv drivers AND leave in the
alias line, so that the ivtv driver looks to the tveeprom_ivtv module. You
may not have a tveeprom module otherwise presuming you have not recompiled
the kernel. Note, the you may not actually need to recompile the kernel to
get the kernel version module: if you do a yum update or equivalent which
can update the kernel, the new kernel will likely be set up to have
everything including the kitchen sink included/turned on/activated. So
something which worked using a DVD install under kernel 2.6.11 may break
when you re-boot after upgrading to kernel 2.6.14 because you NOW have a
kernel module *which did not exist previously*.

(A prime example of "I upgraded and it broke!" Otherwise known as "It
wasn't boken so I frixed it!")

If it is included with the kernel, then the kernel version cx88-dvb module
will be loaded on boot. The process appears not to need any modprobe.conf
entry, but it does need to be told which driver to use so you can get ntsc
(the cx8800 driver) or atsc/qam (the cx88-dvb driver)

I can't access my mythtv box at the moment so I can't provide a dump,
sorry. The only key that I couldn't get to work was the power key,
because I think it sent ctrl+alt+Fn, or something like that, which made
X unhappy. I wrote up a little table using xev and pressing every
button, then used mythweb to set appropriate keys using the table that I
made. Worked fine - except that it was impossible to use a regular
keyboard on that frontend from then on.

Re: [mythtv-users] Lost Sound on PVR-350 After Upgrade to IVTV 0.4.1

2006-01-03 Thread korebantic
I had the same problem as you -- you can search the list for the
answer if you want more background. Here was the solution:

So far I've been using yum to update my drivers, vs compiling from
source. You are right though, I
did have the wrong msp3400 driver loaded. From the mythTv list the
following steps were
recommended, which worked fine:

Go into /lib/modules/$KVER/kernel/drivers/media/video and rename
msp3400.ko to msp3400.ko.orig
Next, go to /lib/modules/$KVER/updates/drivers/media/video and copy
msp3400-ivtv.ko to msp3400.ko
Run depmod -a

Now reload the module
modprobe -r ivtv
modprobe -r msp3400

Re: [mythtv-users] Updating list of HDTV tuners for the HOWTO

2006-01-03 Thread Len Reed
My HD5000 worked just fine in QAM mode for U.S. cable, using 2.6.14 and
a simple patch. That was for proof of concept. I've built my new HDTV
front end, compiled mythtv, and will be switching to this system in the
next few days. Note that the HD5000 does only digital (ATSC broadcast
and QAM); it will not tune analog (NTSC) channels.

I'm quite happy with my Air2PC AirStar HD-5000 (3rd gen) card. I'm only
using it in QAM mode. Note: This requires kernel 2.6.15 or separate DVB
driver installation.

You should also note that the PC-HDTV HD-2000 (older model) only works
for broadcast ATSC, not for QAM. The HD-3000 (current model) does both.

I can confirm that these two work (though HD-5000 requires post-2.6.14
drivers, probably included in 2.6.15), including QAM. HD-5000 in
particular seems rock solid.

1). Run mythbackend from a commandline with debugging output on, so you can see the output of the directv.pl script2). Make sure when you test the script it's with the same user the backend runs with.3). Related to #2, check permissions on the serial device (/dev/ttyS0 or whatever) to make sure that isn't the problem.
4). Check the path to make sure the right copy of the script is being run, and that it is being found. You may even want to try putting the full path to the script in the myth setup.Hopefully one of those will get you closer to a solution!

Re: [mythtv-users] No channels in db, but mythfilldatabase says "Data is already present"

2006-01-03 Thread Joe Votour
Check that you actually have channels in the database.
They should have been created on the first invocation
of mythfilldatabase.

To check that you have channel information, run mysql
and do the query, "select * from channel;". That
should show you a channel list. If you want to remove
them, you can do "delete from channel;".

To get rid of the program listings in the database,
you can use the query, "delete from program;".

If it's mpeg2 try videolan client ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ )You could also try the windows filters i wrote ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsmyth/
) this will allow you to play nuv files without converting it, you still need an mpeg4 codec if you have mpeg4 nuv files.Depending on what version of mythtv you use they may not work well with mpeg2 files from dvb (yet).
It also contains a few shell extensions like tooltips and an convert to avi option for mpeg4 nuvs (no recompression).

I use an Apple bluetooth keyboard because of the extra range (can use it

using it in QAM mode. Note: This requires kernel 2.6.15 or separate DVB
driver installation.

You should also note that the PC-HDTV HD-2000 (older model) only works
for broadcast ATSC, not for QAM. The HD-3000 (current model) does both.

Re: [mythtv-users] Updating list of HDTV tuners for the HOWTO

2006-01-03 Thread Mudit Wahal
Actually, for QAM, I can understand the ratings. But for OTA, there
are other factors such as your antenna, line of sight, cable quality,
etc etc. One man's 9.5 may be someone else's 1 ! You can't compare OTA
between two cards as everyone's setup is different.

FWIW, I've both HD3000 and FusionHDTV 5 Lite in my box and I dont have
any problems with them. For me, I'll rate both 9+ and may be higher
for FusionLite just because of the price point ! I end up paying $180+
for the HD3000 in may 2005. But the Fusion costs $99 !

Re: [mythtv-users] fusion hdtv 5 gold or lite?

2006-01-03 Thread Mudit Wahal
The bt878 chipset is only being used for analog. If your main aim to
capture digital, than the chipset cx23883 and bt878 is not relevant.

But if you want to tune both analog and digital, then go with Gold.

I would suggest getting not just a yes or no answer but how well. I
know the fusionHDTV 5 LITE does work, but it's a piece of junk,
especially when it comes to QAM, and so are a couple other cards
from what I've heard.

What I'm aware of is: (1 bad, 10 perfect)

Model OTA QAM 64 QAM 256
pcHDTV HD-2000 8 No No
pcHDTV HD-3000 9 9 9
Air2pc (2nd gen)9 2 7
FusionHDTV 5 GOLD-X 9.5 ? 7
FusionHDTV 5 LITE 6 ? 3

[mythtv-users] Updating list of HDTV tuners for the HOWTO

2006-01-03 Thread Robert Kulagowski
The current HOWTO mentions two HDTV tuners specifically - the Air2PC and
the PCHDTV series.

According to the list at
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_cards the following ATSC
tuners are now supported:

(Known to work)
*  The PCHDTV card
* The air2pc (1st gen)
* The air2pc (2nd gen)

(Might potentially work)
* The air2pc hd5000 (3rd gen)
* The DViCO FusionHDTV 3 GOLD-Q
* The DViCO FusionHDTV 3 GOLD-T
* The DViCO FusionHDTV 5 GOLD
* The DViCO FusionHDTV 5 LITE
* The ATi HDTV Wonder
* The AVerMedia AVerTVHD A180

I'd like to confirm that there are users successfully using this second
group of cards.

Thanks.

[mythtv-users] OT Recommended Modem for Cid

Hello All,

I am looking for a recommendation on a brand/model modem that works well with
the Caller-ID functions. Would the X100P cards that work with Asterisk work?

Thanks,
