Re: [mythtv-users] Sweet! PC HD3000 QAM_256 working, now about importing those channels?

2006-01-02 Thread Adam Gianola
I just wanted to thank you all for this thread, as it helped me get my hd3000 working.  i had tried working on it long ago and became frustrated and had only slight success, but now it's working great using these instructions.  I have comcast and they don't help out by sending the psip information.  i get the standard broadcast hd stations now!  Best of all, i get many of the regular analog stations too, which look even better than on the analog capture card, the analog tv, or even the digital-cable hd-dvr box.
Thanks again!AdamOn 9/16/05, Jason Beck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Awesome I'm glad you got it working.  I threw thistogether off the top of my head while at work today...I just went through this last week and it was prettydifficult to gather all of the info to make it work.
Along with a lot of trail and error.Another Tip.It may or may not apply.  There is a nifty shortcut toquckly gather all of you QAM freq if you have an HDSTB.  I have a Scientific-Atlanta 3250HD.  The SA box
is all I can speak to but I'm sure other STBs willhave something similar.  If you can get into thestatus menu of you STB you can tune one of you HDchannels and it will display the QAM freq. Its kind of nice when trying to find which channel is
on what freq.  For example channel 708 is my localHDCBS channel via my STB.  I tune the STB to 708, thenhold the + button on the STB until the mail ledflashes the hit the info button on the STB.  Wala! the
status menu.  Check www.avsforum.com for details onhow to get the status menus on your specific model. This has saved me a bunch of time on finding channels. Now all I have to do is use the STB to find the freq.
Then do the dvb scan to find the serviceid.  Saves alot of trial and error.__Yahoo! Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005http://mail.yahoo.com

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: kernel disabling IRQ#7 (Sound Stops working)

2005-07-11 Thread Adam Gianola
I also had a similar problem, however my pvr250 was the one taking up
irq7, so when it got switched off I lost my tv capture :( i'm not
exactly sure how i fixed the problem, but I do see 'pci=useirqmask'
and 'acpi=off' in my grub.conf. I think dmesg told me to do the
pci=useirqmask thing because the irq7 was screaming all the time for
no reason... at least i think thats why i put it there. whatever i
did, i still see ivtv on irq7 and haven't had a problem for ages.

Thanks Mike,
I will definitely try those things if I can. I've been using mplayer
packages from ATRPMS, so I'm surprised if more people aren't having
this problem.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: mplayer audio sync issues

2005-06-08 Thread Adam Gianola
I checked it out, and I have the same results. When I explicitly tell
mplayer to use '-ao oss' there is no sync issue. When I have '-ao
alsa', the audio and video don't match (audio too late). I forgot to
check the CPU load, but its probably not very high (2.4 GHz P4). I
still want to go back to the older alsa and make sure its a problem
with the new alsa and not with both.

[mythtv-users] Re: mplayer audio sync issues

2005-06-06 Thread Adam Gianola
Thanks Axel for the quick response.
It is certainly puzzling, and I only just noticed it the other day, it
could have started happening when I updated on May 28, though I'm not
certain. The old alsa I had been using was 1.0.8, but its wierd in
that only xvid/avi is affected, and I'm using mplayer within and
outside of mythtv with identical results, though it looks like mplayer
hasn't been updated for quite a while. Nothing in the diff's stick
out like a sore thumb. When I get the chance, I'll think about
switching back to alsa 1.0.8 and report back

Thanks again,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] mplayer audio sync issues

2005-06-06 Thread Adam Gianola
Yes this is exactly the problem, and its been easily corrected for me
with the -delay option. I also noticed it happened after an 'apt-get
dist-upgrade' and I'm pretty sure alsa was updated then (as well as
most mythtv packages). The alsa rpms I'm running must be:

alsa-kmdl-2.6.10-1.770_14.rhfc3.at-1.0.9rf-39.rhfc3.at
alsa-driver-1.0.9rf-39.rhfc3.at and alsa-utils-1.0.9rf-14.rhfc3.at
alsa-lib-1.0.9rf-21.rhfc3.at
libasound2-1.0.9rf-21.rhfc3.at

which look like the current versions on atrpms. i'm not entirely sure
what the old versions were, but it had been at least 2 weeks or so
since the last dist-upgrade. I haven't looked at the atrpms list, but
i'm cc'ing this message to that list in the hopes that the right
people notice this and may be able to comment if it is an rpm problem
or not.

FWIW, my mainboard is
SOYO SY-P4RC350 Socket 478 ATI 9100IGP (RS300) Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
with onboard sound
ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97 Audio Controller

Thanks,
Adam

ps. is there a simple way to list the previously installed alsa
packages or downgrade? my mind is failing me right now...

[mythtv-users] mplayer audio sync issues

2005-06-03 Thread Adam Gianola
Hey folks,
Maybe I'm hallucinating (it is entirely possible), but suddenly when I
am watching videos using mplayer in 'watch videos' my audio is out of
sync with the video. If I manually adjust to +0.275s by adding
'-delay 0.275' to the mplayer command line, it looks better. This
only seems to happen with videos played using mplayer (xvid avis in
particular), but when I watch recorded videos (from pvr 250) they are
fine. This only started happening in the last few days, before this,
videos which have the mismatch worked fine. I'm just curious if
anyone else has seen this recently. I've got a FC3 setup using
ATRPMS.

Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] HDTV clip request

2005-04-28 Thread Adam Gianola
I think something screwy is going on with the pchdtv.com website. The
downloads of their driver tar's are also failing, or have been for the
past few days.

Re: [mythtv-users] Anyone successful yet with an HD-3000 and QAM?

2005-04-24 Thread Adam Gianola
I have both working with no problems, finally. I've got a FC3 setup
via Jarod's guide, which includes the PVR-250; using HD3000 2.0
drivers, unmodified. Had to manually add the QAM HD channels to the
database, as mythtvsetup had problems when scanning the qam channels,
but they do work after the manual editing of the db. I guess my cable
provider isn't quite up to speed with the hd qam channels (providing
all the required atsc feed info), which is why mythtvsetup doesn't
detect things perfectly. Others don't have this issue. YMMV.

Good luck,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] Need Help with FC3 pcHDTV HD-3000 Install

2005-04-05 Thread Adam Gianola
I'd recommend a reboot between 'make install' and 'modprobe
cx88-dvb'... this will ensure that old versions of drivers which
should have been replaced by the newly compiled drivers are unloaded
and the new ones are loaded.

Good luck,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] I'm a mythtv failure

2005-04-03 Thread Adam Gianola
the check box for xvmc is in the setup within the front end:

Utilities/Setup --> Setup --> TV Settings --> Playback --> Hardware
Decoding Settings (5th Screen). The top checkbox says 'Use the
PVR-350's TV out / MPEG decoder' and the lower checkbox says 'Use
hardware XvMC MPEG Decoding'. FWIW I can actually use XvMC since I
have a video card which supports it (FX5200), but I never use it...
still too buggy (though it does seem to actually help with HDTV
playback).

Cheers,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] How do you "tune" subchannels in QAM?

2005-04-02 Thread Adam Gianola
Taylor, sounds like I'm in the same boat as Marc. I've got Comcast in
Denver, CO area. I can get unencrypted channels on several
frequencies, two for example are
channel 18 14700 Hz - CBS-HD
channel 119 76500 Hz - ABC-HD

dvbsnoop 0x1FFB just hangs until ctrl-C on either frequency.

I suspected that something more should be coming through and that was
why I had bad luck with the mythtvsetup channel scan, thanks for
confirming this. Is there a possible workaround in the mean time for
adding channels so I can record / watch live? The manual adding of
channels to the database (as per Marc's post above) seems to do ok,
but it certainly isn't perfect. Someone else who has working hd over
qam (with hd3000) shared entries from their channels table with me
which seem to have some different entries than are listed above (ie
some entries which are null in Marc's post shouldn't be). When I get
some time to sort through it, I'll post later with any insights I'm
able to find.

Cheers,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] How do you "tune" subchannels in QAM?

2005-04-01 Thread Adam Gianola
if i do a full scan, it goes through all the frequencies it was able
to lock on and says something like 'unable to tune' or 'timeout
tuning' or something like that. if i do a single frequency scan it
hangs at 5% for a long time (overnight). i really thought that would
work too...

turns out the above method of manually adding the channels hasn't been
perfect, though. it may be that my machine is only 2.4GHz and can't
handle the full hd signal (should work with XvMC, though). I tried
recording seinfeld from fox-hd last night and it isn't pretty. about
like what marc described... i'll keep trying...

maybe better in mythtvsetup to set the options on the hd3000 dvb to
record in ts mode instead of ps mode. i did this and it seems to be
working ok. going to test out a recording, as I really don't plan on
watching livetv with this setup, so we'll have to see how it works
out.

2005-03-31 Thread Adam Gianola
Thanks for you concern, though. At my place OTA is just not possible.
Or at least I could never get it to have a usable signal. I can
confirm the above method of adding channels works, however, as I'm now
in front of the frontend/backend system and am seeing HD-CBS live and
clear! Now to just finish adding the other channels manually, and
setting up the appropriate xmltv ids to get them some usable guide
info!

Re: [mythtv-users] How do you "tune" subchannels in QAM?

2005-03-31 Thread Adam Gianola
I can't figure out what is wrong because channel scanning doesn't seem
to work at all. At least not for me... and it sounds like others are
also having the exact same problem. Azap works and tunes fine and
captures work outside of mythtv using dvbstream. I have viewed them
lots of times on several channels, it is fantastic to see HD captures
from digital cable :)

Mythtv, however, is not working with the hd3000-dvb & qam (or at least
hasn't been) for me. It seems when scanning channels in mythtvsetup,
something is off, as the frequencies which lock are not added to the
database in any useable way. I only get 'timeout tuning channel' or
'unable to tune channel' or something like this. I thought maybe
database entries should be added to the tables 'dvb_channel' or
'dvb_pids' or 'channel' but the only thing i've been able to get are
entries to 'dtv_multiplex' after scanning which help (so I may
manually edit the db) but don't give any functionality. I haven't
been able to view programs yet with the above method of manually
editing the database (away from the frontend), but i'm certainly
stumped otherwise and am not afraid to try this.

As i may have mentioned before, for me no channel information seems to
come through with the TS which may be why myth is hanging here. I
think that 'dvbscan -cvvv' after azap cxxx is where i would see this
(outside of myth) but don't. Perhaps your cable system is providing
this kind of information which is why you can get mythtv to autoscan.
Then again, maybe there's something else I'm missing... If you can
think of anything, I'm ready to try anything... even went so far as to
install myth from cvs (reverted back to atrpms though), to see if
something new was changed since the last release.

Cheers,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] How do you "tune" subchannels in QAM?

2005-03-31 Thread Adam Gianola
Wow, I never would have thought of that, thanks! I also added
something similar to my database, where I used channel 18-1 (which is
cbs-HD here). I can't verify right now if it is working (at work,
too), but the backend replies it is successfully able to tune the
channel...

Now to find if it can tune subchannel 2 in a similar way...

Cheers,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] How do you "tune" subchannels in QAM?

2005-03-31 Thread Adam Gianola
I think quite a few of us working with the hd3000 are having the same
problem and are looking for solutions. I've posted both here and in
the hd3000 forum but it seems like no one has been able to find a
solution to this problem yet. I haven't posted to myth-dev yet, but
maybe thats the place where we may find someone who knows the answer
to our question, as i think it is a problem with how mythtvsetup is
handling the hd3000-dvb. For example, when i run dvbscan -cvvv no
channel information is given, but i've seen examples with OTA ATSC
streams where channel information is explicitly supplied in the
stream. Mythtv may be looking for this and since it doesn't come
through, myth assumes the channels are 'unable to tune'.

Re: [mythtv-users] Auto(?) scanning of QAM channels

2005-03-30 Thread Adam Gianola
perhaps it is selected in your zap2it profile? I also think that when
you remove a channel from the channel list in mythtv-setup it just
sets the 'visible' flag to zero in the channels table in the
mythconverg database. You could always manually remove the entry from
the database and see if it stays away after that.

This will show you the contents of the 'channel' table in the
mythconverg database:

mysqldump -u mythtv -p -a -c mythconverg channel

If you can find out which channel it is you want to remove, determine
the 'chanid' and then you can remove it with

mysql -u mythtv -D mythconverg -p
DELETE from channel WHERE chanid=;
quit

This should remove all traces of the channel from the database instead
of just setting it 'invisible'.

BTW, i'm also trying to use mythtv and hdtv3000 with qam and comcast,
but i'm having horrible luck. perhaps you could share some info with
those of us struggling? I don't know if you took notes about how you
setup to use qam, but if you did that would be great! Even if you
could post some of the contents of your database that might be
helpful. I'd personally love to see part or all of the following:

mysqldump -u mythtv -p -a -c mythconverg channel dvb_channel dvb_pids
dtv_multiplex

Cheers,
Adam

Re: [mythtv-users] Need Help with FC3 pcHDTV HD-3000 Install

2005-03-29 Thread Adam Gianola
The eeprom unknown symbols are possibly related to an 'alias tveeprom
tveeprom-ivtv' in the modprobe.conf. The ivtv tveeprom kernel object
doesn't know about the hd3000, but the hd3000 tveeprom should work for
both the ivtv and hd3000. Comment that line out and it should not
complain. I don't know about the other cx8800 unknown symbols. I
suspect you have some sort of old cx8800.ko lying around. I'm not
exactly sure where the cvs drivers install to but the pchdtv 2.0
drivers install to /lib/modules/2.6.10-1.770_FC3/v4l2/cx8800.ko (or
whichever kernel you are using), but I suspect a similar location for
the cvs drivers. I found an old one in
lib/modules/2.6.10-1.760_FC3/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx8800.ko
Removing it is a good idea (or at least moving it to a backup location
just to be sure).

When I load the hd3000 dvb driver it is 'modprobe cx88-dvb'.
Good luck.

Re: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV-3000 installation questions for Fedora Core 3

2005-03-29 Thread Adam Gianola
The 2.0 drivers from pchdtv.com worked fine for me as far as building
and compiling, at least on my fc3 setup. The INSTALL file under the
doc subfolder says it all pretty much, except for 'make udev' actually
doing nothing for me, which is why i manually copied the rules and
permissions over. After a reboot, this works great and 'modprobe
cx88-dvb' loads the driver.

Re: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV-3000 installation questions for Fedora Core 3

2005-03-29 Thread Adam Gianola
if you place the .rules and .permissions files within the udev
subdirectory in the 2.0 pchdtv driver in the /etc/udev/rules.d and
/etc/udev/permissions.d this should automatically setup the correct
devices for you.

for me with the 2.0 driver, i think i get the hd3000 as /dev/video1
when i modprobe cx88-atsc. this may be because i have a pvr250 as
/dev/video0.

[mythtv-users] dvb channels (not) in database

2005-03-25 Thread Adam Gianola
I'm having some problems getting the dvb functionality working
properly. I'm trying to get the pchdtv 3000 card to tune on qam
digital cable, and I've had some success outside of mythtv but am
struggling for how to get myth working with this card/mode.

Using the pchdtv 2.0 dvb drivers has been certainly fruitful, for OTA
reception is worthless for me. I have scanned through the qam
channels using azap and a channels.conf-qam I found somewhere and
found several channels which give a lock when tuning. For example I
get the following when tuning to channel 18:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# azap c18
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
tuning to 14700 Hz
video pid 0x, audio pid 0x

status 1f | signal f8d4 | snr fd79 | ber | unc | FE_HAS_LOCK
status 1f | signal f8d4 | snr fd71 | ber | unc | FE_HAS_LOCK
status 1f | signal fdf2 | snr fd81 | ber | unc | FE_HAS_LOCK
status 1f | signal f8d4 | snr fd45 | ber | unc | FE_HAS_LOCK

i was surprised to see a low numbered channel which locked, as all the
other channels i have signal on are between 80 and 119 (about 10 in
total). dvbscan was used to see which channels were unencrypted and
had usable sub pids (or so i think):

[EMAIL PROTECTED] tools-2.6-a]# dvbscan -cvvv

other lockable channels are also local hdtv and sdtv channels, and
not every channel which locks gives useable output. there were also 1

i think the cx8800 needs to be loaded before the cx88-dvb. the
following lines are at the bottom of my modprobe.conf, and were put
there by the make-install of the pchdtv 2.0 drivers:

install cx88-atsc /sbin/modprobe cx8800;/sbin/modprobe
--ignore-install cx88-atsc
install cx88-dvb /sbin/modprobe cx8800;/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install cx88-dvb

2005-03-21 Thread Adam Gianola
I made it this far and am having the same issue here. I tried the
test-mpeg2 program as suggested above and won the battle as far as
seeing an actual capture outside of mythtv. My motorola stb is on
node 0, and I used the following command to obtain the capture:

./test-mpeg2 -r 0 test.mpg

Still not sure why it isn't working inside myth...

Re: [mythtv-users] pcHDTV 3000 and PVR250 Help

2005-03-15 Thread Adam Gianola
I have the same setup here, pvr250 which works, and trying to get
hd3000 working. I'm very close, but i'm not sure what to do now.
Using FC3 with kernel 2.6.10-1.766_FC3 and 2.0 drivers from pchdtv.
Heres a snip from my modprobe.conf:

...
# ivtv modules setup
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
#alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
install lirc_i2c /sbin/modprobe ivtv; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install lirc_i2c
...
install cx88-atsc /sbin/modprobe cx8800;/sbin/modprobe
--ignore-install cx88-atsc
install cx88-dvb /sbin/modprobe cx8800;/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install cx88-dvb
install btcx-risc /sbin/modprobe tuner;/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install btcx-risc

Had to comment out the alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv or else I would
get loads of unresolved symbols when modprobe cx88-atsc or cx88-dvb.
I load the modules in rc.d/rc.local:
...
# unload modules if they are loaded so they can be loaded
# in the proper order for everything to work
/sbin/rmmod lirc_i2c
/sbin/rmmod lirc_dev
/sbin/rmmod ivtv
/sbin/rmmod saa7115
/sbin/rmmod bttv
/sbin/rmmod videodev
/sbin/rmmod msp3400
/sbin/rmmod tuner
/sbin/rmmod i2c_algo_bit
/sbin/rmmod tveeprom
/sbin/rmmod i2c_core

# now reload the modules, note that not all modules are reloaded
# explicitly since they are automagically loaded as necessary
/sbin/modprobe i2c_core
/sbin/modprobe i2c_algo_bit
/sbin/modprobe ivtv
/sbin/modprobe lirc_i2c

# next load the pchd3000 dvb module
/sbin/modprobe cx88-dvb

not sure if the unloading then reloading is necessary for ivtv, but i
had problems with ivtv before installing hd3000. it worked for
whatever reason. i'm not too sure of why/whats going on here. when
the modprobe cx88-dvb goes through i see the usual messages in dmesg:
...
cx88[0]/0: found at :02:06.0, rev: 5, irq: 5, latency: 64, mmio: 0xfc00
cx88[0]/0: registered device video1 [v4l2]

cx88[0]/0: registered device radio1

cx88[0]/2: found at :02:06.2, rev: 5, irq: 5, latency: 64, mmio: 0xfd00
cx88[0]/2: cx2388x based dvb card
DVB: registering new adapter (cx88[0]).
DVB: registering frontend 0 (pcHDTV HD3000 HDTV)...

after placing the udev 10-pchdtv.rules & .permissions in the
/etc/udev/rules.d/ and permissions.d/ I modified the .permissions to
change from root:users to mythtv:users in order that mythvsetup had
permission to use/read/configure the dvb device.

my problem now is that i can no longer change the channel in mythtv on
the pvr250 card. i still haven't tried anything with the hd3000.
anyone have advice on this channel changing issue?

Re: [mythtv-users] What to do on XBox when the backend crashes

2005-03-15 Thread Adam Gianola
Perhaps you could borrow from Jarod's Fedora Mythtvology for how to
make the power button do something useful. I implemented this on my
back/frontend and it works great to kill the front end (push power
button one time), and then restart it (push power button a second
time). I have an xbox frontend setup, but no dvd remote so i can't
try it on that.

Re: [mythtv-users] problems on playback due to no ACPI and IRQ sharing?

2005-03-11 Thread Adam Gianola
I also had a similar problem, which it seems has been cured. I'm not
sure of the cause or solution, but I'll describe what I observed and
what changed as maybe it might help you.

Currently my mythtv setup is on a FC3 box following Jarod's excellent
howto. The machine has a Soyo SY-P4RC350 mainboard with a P4 2.4GHz
with 512MB PC2700. I've disabled the onboard ATI video, and am using
an agp nvidia 5200 video card instead. The display is on the vga
output of this card, and I'm using the onboard sound. I am using a
PVR-250 for video capture, and have a pchdtv hd3000 card installed
which is not in use currently, since I can't figure out how to make it
and the 250 play nicely (OTA HD reception is poor in my area to boot).
I also have a 1394a card which I intend on using with the new
functionality of myth 0.17 when I upgrade to digital cable.

When playing back divx or xvid avi's (with mplayer from within myth)
across the network from a windows smb share I observed something
similar to what you described, the video skipping a few second every
couple of minutes. I never tried playing avi's from the myth box
itself, however. I could rewind and the video would play fine where
it skipped before, but again every few minutes it would skip a second
or two. I turned up the mplayer cache to 5000 kB (-cache 5000
option), which maybe helped some network streaming issues, I don't
think it solved the skipping problem. Certainly I observed some irq
problems as occassionally I would see a nice little popup which says
"Disabling IRQ 15" (or some such number, which corresponds to the
PVR-250). After this video capture doesn't work, naturally, until
rebooted. I added the option "acpi=off" to my grub.conf at some
point. I don't think that fixed either of the problems. Some time
later I upgraded from the 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 kernel to 2.6.10-1.766_FC3,
after which I had sound card issues (volume muted or some such
nonsense). Reviewing the dmesg carefully upon boot after this kernel
upgrade, I discovered some trouble about irq sharing (sharing disabled
I believe) which the dmesg suggested the option "pci=usepirqmask". I
tried it and never looked back. I don't think i have seen the
'disabling irq 15' or video skipping problem since, but maybe i'm
wrong. I never bothered to look at the cpu usage, since it should
have plenty of power to play back whatever i was throwing at it.
hell, i have an xbox frontend in the bedroom that works flawlessly for
the same playback across the network. I also had some troubles with
the playback of videos recorded from the pvr-250 which i finally
solved by looking carefully at jarods guide and adding "alias msp3400
msp3400-ivtv" to the modprobe.conf. At some point I also added the
"-ao alsa" to the video playback command for mplayer to make sure it
was using alsa like it should be.

I don't know which of these solved the issues (or if it is even
solved), but I don't recall seeing this stupid skipping problem for a
few weeks now. It certainly is irritating, i know. I'm hoping it is
solved permanently. it couldn't hurt to try the kernel options i
mentioned above. maybe it will fix your problems.

Good luck,
Adam
