RE: [mythtv-users] ivtv-kmdl and lirc-kmdl for 2.6.14-1.1637 missing

This is good advice.

I have learnt through previous trial-and-error to stop blindly using "yum
update" to upgrade the kernel until I am sure ivtv-kmdl has been updated for
the new kernel. :)

Out of interest how fast is RedEye at changing the channel on a Sky digibox?

I assume I would need "Red-Eye Serial" for a Sky box? (the normal one looks
like it just works on NTL/Telewest boxes).

I would also be interested in getting a copy of your redeye.c and
"skychannel" script if that's not too much trouble :)

Do you have mythfilldatabase running every night?

I've noticed that mythfilldatabase uses practically 100% CPU usage for the
entire time it is running (several minutes on my system). This would push
your load average up.

Well, it seems like a total no-brainer to me - but maybe I am prejudiced
coming from such an elegant (by comparison) system as Sky+ Digital here in
the UK.

I actually thought there was something wrong with my keyboard at first when
I realised that pressing "r" again didn't stop recording. I searched
Google, found a keymap for mythfrontend and have only recently come to the
conclusion that Myth is "weird".

Whilst the premise of recording whole programmes, scheduling ones in the
future, etc appears to work as designed there is a glaring oversight in not
allowing "instant record on/off".

Taking the music video example further, I might be casually watching the
channel and come across a song that I like. Unless I am mistaken whilst I
can rewind Myth back to the beginning of the song, when I hit "r" it will
record from wherever "Live TV" currently is, not where the ringbuffer is
positioned, plus I have to quit back to the Myth menu and manually stop it
recording when the song completes, and tell it never to record the whole
programme again.

What if there happens to be another song in the same time period of the
programme (which is easily conceivable given music programmes in the EPG can
be several hours long) that I want to record? If I've set it not to record,
Myth won't do anything when I hit "r".

I haven't tried Windows Media Centre yet, but I'm keen to see if it is
un-user friendly as Myth is when it comes to the simple premise of "record
what I want right now, and stop recording when I tell you to".

I've wondered this too.

Is there any way to physically delete it though so it doesn't appear in the
list at all?

I have recorded a music video on MTV a few times which has come on at a
random time (not listed in EPG) and does not need to be repeated. In this
instance all I want Myth to do is record when I hit a button, and stop
recording when I hit another button.

>From what I can gather once Myth starts recording (by pressing 'r') it will
continue recording until the end of the "programme" which, in some music
channels case, can often be several hours long (i.e. some music channels
have one programme that runs 24 hours, which has lots of random songs
playing). I have tried hitting 'r' again but this doesn't stop recording, I
have to manually press escape, go into "Upcoming Recordings" and tell it to
stop. This is less than desireable.

Is there any way that Myth can just "instant record" when I tell it to, and
stop when I tell it to, disregarding anything in the EPG?

To give an example, on Sky+ here in the UK you have a record button on the
remote control which, when pressed, records the current channel. This stops
when either the programme ends, or when the user manually hits record/stop
again. It isn't then added to any scheduled recordings list (why would I
want to record a random piece of television again, and why would it even
necessarily be on again ever at the same time, or on the same channel - in
the example of a music video).

Any ideas?

I am using GNOME 2.x with Fedora Core 4.

The screensaver is "Xscreensaver", accessed through the menus, etc.

I'd like to know the answer to this too.

I have a script which starts mythfrontend after doing "xset s off" and "xset
-dpms off" etc and despite this the screensaver always kicks in, even on
"Blank Screen Only". If I move the mouse or presses a key it asks me to
enter a password.

In my case, I log in as a regular user and run mythfrontend and mythbackend
as root (don't ask). Could this cause a problem?

RE: [mythtv-users] FC4 - Xine Install Problem - Unmet Dependencies

2005-07-31 Thread Darren Coleman

(sorry for top posting, blame Outlook L )

You’re probably having problems
because you seem to be using the wrong repo for FC4.  http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/3/i386/freshrpms/
is for Fedora Core 3.

Also, you’re probably better off
using “yum”.  A simple “yum install xine” with the
correct repos would do the job.

I’m using the following, albeit on kernel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4:

xine.i386
0.99.4-1.2.fc4 installed

xine-lib.i386
1.1.0-1.2.fc4  installed

Both came from freshrpms and installed
without any dependency issues.

I'm running Fedora Core 4 with kernel 2.6.12-1.1390_FC4.  My

Since you

I definitely agree with this.

(I forgot to mention I'm using a PVR 350 - so hardware encoding here).

You are not going to get fluid PVR on a 1Ghz processor with software
encoding - it's that simple. It doesn't matter whether its Myth, Sage,
Windows Media Centre or anything else.

If you truly want to watch live TV then just install xine or equivalent, and
type: xine fifo://dev/video0 (or whatever ivtv creates). You won't be able
to record anything, or have an EPG, or any of the other niceties that Myth
provides.

If you stick diesel fuel in a car, and fit it with 4 bald tyres you can't
complain when it doesn't perform like it was supposed to.

RE: [mythtv-users] MythShyte: One unhappy customer

2005-07-19 Thread Darren Coleman

Don’t know if this will help but
when I had 512MB in my system (XP 2400, Shuttle SK41G, Geforce FX5200) I would
get some stuttering when the feed first started, leaving Myth about 5-6 seconds
behind live TV.

After swapping out the memory and
replacing it with 1GB (2x512) I don’t get any stuttering at all –
and Myth stays at 1 second behind Live (which is to be expected as it has to
prebuffer *something*).

Might be worth trying – mythbackend
and mythfrontend use A LOT of memory.

I am atill getting prebuffer pause even though I have done
everything recommended in the documentation pages:

* bought and installed a geforce card

* got xwindows working with nvidia

* upgraded machine to a P3-1Ghz. (not a celeron!)

* checked and reconfigured all of the TV settings under
mythtv.

Mythtv on my system was build using fc3 and atrpms. So I
compiled nothing.

Am I missing something crucial here, or is this just a case
of sloppy code. This project has cost me time and money to get a result that is
no better than "myth-shyte". After all, why would I now go and buy a
p4-3.3 to watch tv, when I can just plug in my P1 and do the same thing
(without buffering naturally).

Unless Im blind in both eyes and delusional, I think the
next step is to return to freevo aka bugvo and give mythtv the myth-skip.

Jeff,

I replied to your email personally and to the list - did you not see it?. I
am using a PVR-350 (pretty much identical to the PVR-250 besides TV-out) and
FC4 with no problems at all.

RE: [mythtv-users] IVTV, FC4 & PVR-250 broken?

2005-07-13 Thread Darren Coleman
Dunno if I can help as I have a PVR 350, but here are my version numbers
(all installed from YUM):

ivtv-firmware-dec-2.02.023-4.at
ivtv-firmware-enc-2.04.024-4.at
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.12-1.1390_FC4-0.3.6w-94.rhfc4.at
ivtv-0.3.6w-94.rhfc4.at
kernel-2.6.12-1.1390_FC4
kernel-devel-2.6.12-1.1390_FC4

My /etc/modprobe.conf (which I'm not 100% sure is correct for PAL, but Myth,
etc seems to work correctly):

# ivtv modules setup
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
options ivtv tda9887=0
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv; /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb

Hope this helps,

Daz

Hi Ant,

Thanks for that info.

I did try doing that originally, but when I had the freqid the same as the
channum (e.g. 106 for Sky One) whenever I tried pressing up/down on the
cursor keys, or indeed any channel navigation I just got a load of
CheckChannel() error messages saying things like "No such channel 'E9'",
etc.

Obviously it's looking for frequencies in the "europe-west" frequency table
as this was how I set it up originally, but how can I get it to just accept
the channel numbers as freqids (e.g. 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 124, 127,
etc) without complaining about missing channels?

Thanks,

Darren

[mythtv-users] Freqid and Sky Digital

2005-07-08 Thread Darren Coleman
Hi,

Hoping someone out there can help me.

I've got MythTV receiving input from a Sky Digital STB, via a Hauppauge
PVR-350. The signal is coming via S-video into the S-video IN on my PVR350.
Everything appears to be working correctly except for one small problem -
changing channels.

Running tv_grab_uk_rt does not populate any freqids in the database (wait, I
know you're going to say mythfilldatabase --manual) but in actuality I don't
need Myth/ivtv or whatever to "tune" to the selected station, it simply
needs to send 3 numbers to the box and the box changes it.

Right now when I press the arrow keys to go up or down a channel it just
pauses for a while and then comes back with the same channel information. I
understand from the debugging output that this is because there are missing
freqids from the "europe-west" freqtable I am using (e.g. SE11, E8, etc).

If I run "ptune.pl -f pal-europe-west --list-channels" I get a list of known
frequency IDs. I *could* use these freqids to populate the database
manually, but the problem there then is that there are only 109 known
freqids, and I have - from memory - at least 160 channels in the database.

All I basically want Myth to do when I type in a channel number, or press
up/down on the cursor keys is to adjust the program guide and OSD
accordingly. I don't need it to try and *tune* anything, since ultimately I
will have to get it set up so it sends the necessary numbers down an IR
"Redeye" or similar bit of kit to change it.

Any ideas? I can't believe I'm the first person to hit this problem, and
yet I couldn't find any specific info anywhere in the archives.

Regards,

Darren
