[mythtv-users] Re: Is this a memory leak?

2005-01-10 Thread Don Brett
OK, maybe I sent everyone on a wild goose chase. Somebody tell me if
this makes sense:

- Start X, Mythbackend, Mythfrontend, and start to play live TV, all is
fine.
- Watch memory and it grows to almost max, but mythfrontend doesn't
increase.
- Stop movie and memory returns to normal.
- Start live TV again and let it run. Memory grows to max, then
swapping starts.

Is the memory growth due to buffered-up video (which is used for jumping
back)? If that's the case, then this is perfectly normal operation.
Or, is there a limit on the amount of ram that mythfrontend should
consume during playback?

It's starting to sound like my freezing problem is caused by something
else?  Comments?  Thanks,
Don

Here's some additional data. Actually, I don't see mythbackend or
mythfrontend growing at all. It only happens while playing (movie or
live tv). Thanks for the help, can I provide any more data?

[mythtv-users] Is this a memory leak?

2005-01-09 Thread Don Brett
I'm having a problem with mythfrontend freezing, well, actually it locks
up the entire computer. It can play live TV for 30 to 120 minutes
before it freezes. The same thing happens with recorded movies. It
seems to be memory related.

I ran the K performance monitor. Results are:
- the machine starts with 380 Meg of ram.
- start X and memory stabilizes, running at about 139 Meg,
- start mythbackend, it uses about 10 meg of memory and stabilizes.
- start mythfrontend, it uses about 35 meg of memory and stabilizes.
- Play live TV and memory slowly ramps up to just under maximum
available. This takes about 10 minutes.
- Leave it playing and I see memory bobbling around 4 meg under max.
- If I leave it running like this, it will eventually freeze the machine
(press reset button to recover).

During the ramp up to max:
- Stop playing live TV and memory return to normal (usually).
- Start playing live TV again and memory ramps up to max.
- While memory is ramping up, change channel and it levels out for about
2 minutes, then starts to ramp up again.

Most of my experience says this is a memory leak. Anyone have an idea
of what to do?  Thanks,
Don

[mythtv-users] Re: PVR-350 requires firmware?

2005-01-03 Thread Don Brett
Yes, it needs firmware (and it's not that obvious). The manual way to
do it is to run:

ivtvfwextract.pl FirmwareFileName

, where FirmWareFileName is the name of the firmware file you downloaded
from:

http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=Drivers+and+Firmware

Generally, this is done during the installation of the driver, which is
probably handled in one of the rpm's mentioned by Axel. If you do it
manually, you need to figure out what driver version, kernel module
patch file, and firmware versions to use. If the rpm doesn't work out
(and if you feel like experimenting), the drivers are here:

http://205.209.168.201/~ckennedy/ivtv/

Good luck,

John at Netdirect - I was talking about the "Use PVR250/350 output" in

It seems that every time I attempt to apply FC instructions to

Also, could you post the ivtv and lircd portions of your modules.conf?

2004-12-29 Thread Don Brett
Uuuhh, this may be way off target, but you may want to consider this:

>Installed the ivtv 0.3 driver and it seems to be much better
- ivtv 0.3 is generally considered bleeding edge, you may want to
consider 0.2x
http://205.209.168.201/~ckennedy/ivtv/
- If you're using the 0.2x or 0.3x driver the tuner type is
automatically detected. There's no need to force it.
- If you're using the 0.3 driver, I believe the modules.conf setup
should look more like:

# use this setup for the ckennedy drivers (0.2x and 0.3x)
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv

### setup with original driver - stock 0.1.9 version - NTSC#
#alias char-major-81 videodev
#alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
#alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
#options tuner type=47
#options saa7127 enable_output=1 output_select=0
#options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
#add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 saa7127 tuner
#add above ivtv ivtv-fb
#add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c

[mythtv-users] Re: Connection problem

2004-12-24 Thread Don Brett
I just took a quick look to see what that error was about. Here's what
I found:

- The connection may be working fine.
- It's doing a check on protocol compatibility before proceeding (a good
thing to do).
- This check throws an error if it doesn't understand the response from
the backend, which is what I would expect if the protocol doesn't match.

It seems that the backend is a different version than what mythweb is
expecting. And probably different enough that it doesn't even
understand the answer.

Here's the function that's returning the error:

...
check_proto_version:
Check that we are speaking a version of the protocol that is
compatible
*/
function check_proto_version($fp) {
global $MYTH_PROTO_VERSION;
$our_version = $MYTH_PROTO_VERSION;
$cmd = "MYTH_PROTO_VERSION " . $our_version;
$response = explode(backend_sep, backend_command2($cmd, $fp));
if ($response[0] == "ACCEPT")
return;
if ($response[0] == "REJECT")
{
trigger_error("Incompatible protocol version (mythweb=" .
$our_vers
return;
}
trigger_error("Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION '" .
$cmd . "'
}

/*
.

Mythweb is expecting the backend protocol version to be 13.

>From line 15 of mythbackend.php:

...
// MYTH_PROTO_VERSION is defined in libmyth in
mythtv/libs/libmyth/mythcontext.
// and should be the current MythTV protocol version.
$MYTH_PROTO_VERSION = "13";
...

So, looking for mythcontext:
#locate mythcontext

, mine is located on:

/usr/local/include/mythtv/mythcontext.h

, and here's the line from mythcontext.h that defines the version (line
114)

#define MYTH_PROTO_VERSION "13"

So, go look at your mythcontext.h to see what version it is. Don't know
if this helps, but it might be a good start. Good luck,
Don

[mythtv-users] Re: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

2004-12-24 Thread Don Brett
"Select NULL" works for me when I run it manually:

.
#mysql -umythtv -pmythtv

mysql> SELECT NULL;
+--+
| NULL |
+--+
| NULL |
+--+
1 row in set (0.09 sec)

mysql>quit
#
.

So, it sounds like Mysql is giving you a connection error when the
program tries to kick it (sounds like a keep-alive sort of function),
which is what you suspected in the first place. Uuuhh, ok, I've never
seen mysql timeout like that before, even when I haven't used it for
days, but, I don't have any power saver features running, other than
defaults.

Here's some threads that might help:

Variable that can be set in Mysql:
http://rucus.ru.ac.za/docs/mysql/SHOW-VARIABLES.html

Setting mysql server variables:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Server_system_variables.html

Setting wait_timeout variable:
http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/176811

I know none of this sounds simple, but it's all I could come up with.
Good luck,
Don

[mythtv-users] Cursor disappears when overtop of mythfrontend

2004-12-24 Thread Don Brett
I run mythfrontend and the program works fine, except the cursor
(pointer arrow) disappears whenever it's on the gray background of the
window. The keyboard works fine, the cursor reappears when it's over
the window border at the top. No other program windows do this. Anyone
know how to fix it? Thanks,

No, I don't want the bounty. This is an excerpt from a slackware

If you just get a black/blank screen, you're /dev/video16 probably
wasn't created correctly. This has happened to me almost everytime i've

$ su

[mythtv-users] Re: Msg: "Remote encoder not responding."

2004-12-22 Thread Don Brett
I assume it's talking about the encoder hardware on your capture board.
I think the process is something like:

antenna analog signal into capture board -> signal is encoded into mpeg
video stream by the capture board -> video stream is decoded for
playback onto your monitor or TV.

It seems that the encoding process is dying. You probably want to look
for an ivtv driver (assuming you're using the Hauppauge pvr 250 or 350)
or video board driver issue. Good luck,
Don

[mythtv-users] Re: Does this sound like a hardware issue?

2004-12-22 Thread Don Brett
No, hardware wouldn't be my first guess, but, I've seen lots of posts
about early WD drive failures, so, maybe it is. Here's some info:

1. Look for mythpostohfkoL on your machine
#locate mythpostohfkoL

- This file does not exist on my machine, but, I'm in the US. Does that
make a difference?
- xtvdService is also not on my machine.

2. On the 401 Unauthorized error

>Refreshing Tomorrow's data
>- --14:53:16--
>http://datadirect.webservices.zap2it.com/tvlistings/xtvdService
>~ => `-'
>Resolving datadirect.webservices.zap2it.com... 206.18.98.160

>connected.
>POST data file missing: /tmp/mythpostohfkoL
>HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 401 Unauthorized

Yes, I've seen the 401 Unauthorized error before. It usually moves on
to the next url and is successful.

3. This error:

>DB Error (Populating temporary table dd_v_station):
>Query was:
>INSERT INTO dd_v_station (stationid, callsign, stationname, affiliate,
>fccchannelnumber, channel) SELECT dd_station.stationid, callsign, stati

>d_lineupmap.lineupid = "OK35543:-") );
>Driver error was [2/2013]:
>QMYSQL3: Unable to execute query
>Database error was:
>Lost connection to MySQL server during query

, is probably related to the mythpostohfkoL issue

4. Here's some instuctions to some basic mysql tips:

- To enter into the linux mysql client
#mysql -uroot -pyourpassword

or, using the mythtv user and password,

#mysql -umythtv -pmythtv

Once into the client:

- to display databases:
mysql>show databases:

- to switch to a particular database (in this case 'mythconverg'):
mysql>use mythconverg;

- to display all tables in a database:
mysql>show tables;

- to display all contents of all rows of a table (in this case, the
channel table):
mysql>select * from channel;

- to display only selected columns of a table (in this case chanid,
channum, and freqid from the channel table):
mysql>select chanid, channum, freqid from channel;

Hope this helps, good luck,
Don

2004-12-22 Thread Don Brett
I don't have this problem and I'm no expert, but you asked, so:

1. It's probably related to frame buffers or video drivers for your
specific board.
2. I have friends that claim linux can't be locked up unless you're
doing something with frame buffers.
3. I've seen various posts from earlier versions that talk about
changing some framebuffer values (no sure what that means).

Good luck,

[mythtv-users] Re: Question about Chris's new tuners patch.

2004-12-16 Thread Don Brett
I did this patch several weeks ago and made all the mistakes. I ended
up rebuilding the kernel and all the modules. However, somebody
suggested doing the following (I wish I had thought of this!)

1- Locate your existing tuner.o file and write it down.
#locate tuner.o
- Mine is located here:
/lib/modules/2.4.27/kernel/drivers/media/video/tuner.o

2- cd to the location of the tuner source code. Mine is here:
/usr/src/linux-2.4.27/drivers/media/video/tuner.c

3- Patch the tuner.c and tuner.h files
- Note - Pretty much follow the ckennedy instructions, but the path in
the patch was not correct for my box. I had to have the patch file on
the same directory as the existing source file for the patch to find the
tuner.c and tuner.h files.

4- cd to /usr/src/linux
5- run make_modules
- do not run make_modules_install !!

6- Rename your original file to something (tuner.o.sav). Copy the new
tuner.o file to the installed location (from step 1 above).

Warning - Several people have horsed-up their installation when trying
to install this patch, but I think this process works. Things went
wrong for me when I did make_modules_install, which should have worked,
but that's another story! Good luck,
Don

[mythtv-users] Re: Nuvexport error on picking shows to process

2004-12-05 Thread Don Brett
Hi Gavin, I think it worked. Well, yes, it definitely worked. To
answer your question, yes, I did compile avidemux from source, and the
version is:

avidemux-2.0.34-test1 (11-06-2004)

, which is the latest one posted on:

http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

They have earlier versions posted, which one do you use?

I changed the driver over to ivtv-0.2.0-rc3a and did a couple of more
test runs. At first, it failed in a completely different way. Then I
started over (new capture and very deliberate moves in creating the
cutlist). It worked once and failed once. The steps were:

- Capture a 15 minute clip
- Wait 2 minutes for processing to finish (mythbackend)
- Access Mythfrontend and play movie
- Press M to display menu
- Select Edit (this puts up a timeline without any commercials shown)
- Press Z to load commercial flag list (which displayed the cuts)
- Adjust cut points
- Escape, escape to exit playing movie
- Run immediately after adjusting cuts
- Nuvexport runs for 5 seconds and failed
- Wait 5 minutes
- Run nuvexport (on exactly the same clip), worked fine

I think I probably missed a step in the Edit mode during the previous
attempt. I didn't load the commercial flagging list, I just put in cut
points. It seems to be fairly touchy about the commercial flagging and
cutlist so I'll pay closer attention on the next test runs.

I'm a little confused about the 'rules of engagement', so I'll be
scrutinizing the cutlist thing a little closer. As for nuvexport,
outstanding job. Assuming the source is correct, it works fine. Thanks
again for all the help, I'll be doing more experimenting.
Don

PS - The menus on tvout still don't work. They used to work with an
earlier version of firmware, so I may try switching back.

I seem to recall something about the black and white thing. If you
record in ntsc and the ivtv driver is forced to pal (or vise versa) it
would do this. But I have to admit, I'm not sure how you would get that
combination.

On the pvr350, double check the tuner type it's reporting (dmesg). The
latest Hauppauge boards are reporting tuner types that are not supported
in the standard 2.4.xx or 2.6.xx releases and require a kernel module
patch (tuner.h and tuner.c).

[mythtv-users] Which ivtv driver and firmware should I use for Pvr 350?

2004-12-04 Thread Don Brett
Hi, I'm having difficulty getting menus to display on the tvout of the
pvr350. If I turn off the tvout feature and just use the computers
monitor, it works fine.

I started with the release versions of ivtv and the suggested firmware:

- Driver - ivtv-0.1.9.tar.gz
- Firmware - pvr_1.18.21.22168_inf.zip

It worked fine on the computer monitor, but didn't get anything out of
tvout. I found a guide that said I had to use one of the ckennedy
drivers for the pvr 350. So, I ended up using:

Driver - ivtv-0.3.1s.tgz
Firmware - pvr48wdm_1.8.22037.exe

The tvout plays movies just fine, but none of the menus do anything. If
I turn off tvout, they still work fine on the computers monitor.

Which driver and firmware do the developers recommend for the Pvr 350?
Thanks for the help,
Don

PS - Should this question be posted to users list or to the devel list?

Distro - Slackware 9.1
Kernel - 2.4.27
Capture board - Hauppauge pvr 350 (tuner type 47 with tuner.c and
tuner.h patches)

[mythtv-users] Re: DirectFB error crashes mythfrontend

2004-12-03 Thread Don Brett
I've no clue what your problem is, but I did some poking around (it
sounded interesting). Here's what I found:

- DirectFB is a video driver layer (direct frame buffer), similar to
MS-DirectX (or at least that's how they describe it)
- It should be compatible with V4L (video for linux)
- videoout_directfb.cpp and videoout_directfb.h are part of the MythTv
source code (that's a good sign)
- Your error starts at:

(!) DirectFB/fbdev/vt: KD_GRAPHICS failed!
--> Operation not permitted

, which sounds like a permissions issue. This is the only thread I
found on the subject:

http://212.227.36.85/mailinglists/directfb-users/2004/06-2004/msg00101.html

Also look at:
http://www.directfb.org/

, maybe there's some clues there (or a fix)

It doesn't sound like he's working on the same thing you are, but maybe
it's the same root cause. Good luck,
Don

PS - DirectFB/fbdev/vt does not exist on my Linux box (Slackware 9.1 -
if that means anything??)

[mythtv-users] Nuvexport - is it just me, or is this normal?

2004-12-02 Thread Don Brett
Hi, I'm trying to figure out where my problem is:

1. Start nuvexport and get the normal menu (picklist of 1-9) (good so
far)
2. Pick any selection (1-9) and get a listing of movies (still good)
3. Pick any movie to process and get this error(s):

Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
/usr/local/share/nu
vexport/nuv_export/ui.pm line 316,  line 2.

If I were to disregard the error, the remainder is correct. Is this
normal? I haven't seen this problem posted, so I suspect it has
something to do with my machine. I can pick any of the next selections
and it will continue (but fails later during rendering) Thanks for any
pointers,
Don

[mythtv-users] Re: Confused...

2004-12-02 Thread Don Brett
Don't know what distro you're using, but your description sounds allot
like mine. Here's the setup guide I followed: (I am using Slackware
9.1)

http://home.comcast.net/~homebrewracing/Mythtv.txt

Take a look at "===Install IVTV Driver===" section for a couple of tips
on troubleshooting the pvr 250. It doesn't have much (if anything) on
the audio setup but the video parts might help. The instructions in
this section are fairly generic.

Audio took me forever to get working. Here's what I ended up doing:
(assuming you're using alsa and it's installed)

1. Run alsaconf, it will find your sound hardware and set up
/etc/modules.conf
#alsaconf

2. At the end of alsaconf, it says it will run rcalsasound (?? not sure
that's the exact thing it tried to run, but it's close) to configure the
mixer setting, but that program is nowhere to be found on my machine. I
had to do it manually:

#alsamixer

, make sure the master volume is not muted (MM at top of slider means
left and right are muted). Esc to exit and your settings will be saved
to memory but not permenent.

#alsa store

, saves mixer settings

#alsa restore

, reloads mixer settings

3. Now go into X
#startx

4. open a console and run xmms (very commonly found music player in
Linux). It should play properly. I found that if this worked, mythtv
would have sound.

5. Here's a couple of commands that I found to be handy:

lsmod - displays list of kernel modules that are loaded (like sound and
video). Here's what mine looks like:

(don't know why appletalk and ipx are loaded, I'll have to look into
that!)

lspci -v - displays pci hardware that has been found. The capture board
should look something like: (except mine is a pvr 350)

apachectl start - starts web server (if you're using mythweb)
apachectl stop - stops web server
httpd -l - (lower case L) - shows modules that are loaded in apache
dmesg | less - shows progress of drivers loading (like video and audio
and others, q to quit)
locate xxx (xxx is whatever file name you're looking for) - shows
location of file(s)
updatedb - updates 'locate' listing (good to run this after you install
something)

That's l it took for my setup. Good luck,
Don

[mythtv-users] Nuvexport error on picking shows to process

2004-12-01 Thread Don Brett
Hi, I'm trying-out the nuvexport MPEG2->MPEG2 cut only feature, but I
get an error. It starts with:

You have recorded the following shows:

  1. 15 CNN Headline News (1 episode)
  2. Band of Brothers (1 episode)
  3. Nip/Tuck (1 episode)

  q. Quit

Choose a show:

, then I pick show number 1 and get:

Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
/usr/local/share/nuvexport/nu
v_export/ui.pm line 316,  line 2.
Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
/usr/local/share/nuvexport/nu
v_export/ui.pm line 316,  line 2.

You have chosen to export 1 episode:

  1. 15 CNN Headline News:
 2004/11/29 6:40 AM (11/29, 06:40 AM) x MPEG
 Mon Nov 29 - (15min) - Manual recording

* Separate multiple episodes with spaces

  c. Continue
  n. Choose another show
  q. Quit

Choose a function, or episode(s) to remove:

Line 316 is:

   sub confirm_shows {
my @episodes = @_;
my $num_episodes = @episodes;

 ..

$query .= "($episode->{'showtime'})
".$episode->{'finfo'}{'width'}.'x'
 .$episode->{'finfo'}->{'height'}.'
'.$episode->{'finfo'}{'video_type'};

.

It looked like it was having trouble getting the showtime from the hash,
but the showtime is properly displayed. I tried 'c' to continue, but it
errored-out when the processing started (as expected). Looks like maybe
something is out-of-sync? Any ideas? Thanks,
Don
