LOL - fantastic! Lend me one and I'll tell you :-)

Most "servers" could probably handle lots of DVB cards, as this is
only PCI bandwidth and disk IO speed. PCI bus is probably you next
problem as disk IO is not usually an issue.

I would think that a quad CPU box will easily transcode 4 programs,
but you did not ask how long it would take?

Linux clustering should be able to remove the SPOF of the backend -
you would also need to cluster the DB and NFS parts. Obviously if you
have a failure whilst recording then there will be a "gap", unless you
have 2 backends, but most things are broadast twice these days.

Re: [mythtv-users] MythTV does not recognize my Twinhan DVB card

2005-03-20 Thread Greg Cope
You need to: modprobe dvb-bt8xx to get the devices to appear (but do
this at the end as you need to do the following 1st)

You' also need to

/usr/sbin/groupadd video
/usr/sbin/usermod -G video mythtv
Add the following to the end of: /etc/udev/permissions.d/50-udev.permissions
# DVB devices
dvb/*:$local:video:0660
dvb:$local:video:0660
dvb/adapter*:$local:video:0660

The devices should now have the right perms too.

You might need to add the modprobe to a start script to get them to
appear at boot.

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: LCD Monitor vs. LCD TV for Display

2005-02-04 Thread Greg Cope
As much as I'd love to spend $/£1300 on something like this, I don't
have the spare cash at the moment.

In the interium I am thinking of getting a 19" LCD Monitor for £200 to
replace my 21" TV - I know the formats are not quite the same so the
19" will be smaller, but I need a tv that accepts Svideo (mine does
not!).

Its that or spending £500 on a 32" WideScreen non HD TV , but I do not
see the point as in a few years we will have HD tv in europe (UK
eventually) so I'd be replacing that again (and by then LCD tv's
will be half/third the price they are now).

Am I makeing a mistake?

[mythtv-users] LCD display or CRT TV or projector

2004-12-28 Thread Greg Cope
Hi All,

I am struggling to understand the differences between all of these.

My TV (21") does not accept S-Video In, so I need a different
solution. Presently HD is not due in the UK until 2006 at least.
What are the choices for a good PVR display

What is the best quality/best VFM display.

Do I:

- Get an 19" LCD montior - cheap, but what is the quality like
(interlaced vs non-interlaced)
- Get a different TV - Wide Screen 28/32" - expensive, and most accept
SVideo which seems a bit of a comprimise.
- Get a Projector and use DVI - expensive.

Basically what is the best way to get a good picture akin to a
Component in TV + Component out DVD player, which at the mo seems the
best way to get a good AV picture.

Hope the above makes sense.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Hard Drives that Actually Work?

2004-12-28 Thread Greg Cope
Sorry, meant no.

Most disk failures that I have seen (100+ disks, in DC's that have
1000's) have been when the systems have been power cycled, and the
disks fail at startup or just after.

Normal policy at some places is to replace at the the 1st sign of
errors, as you can factor this work in when you want to, compared to
it failing when you do not want it to (Friday afternoon). The cost of
the disk is actually small compared with the work required to replace
it properly (take a backup, replace disk, check it etc ... A sysadmin
has to do some work, along with a disk swapping monkey (might be one
and the same!))

I've only seen a few (less than 10, probably 5) fail whilst in use.
So a rough guestimate would be that 95% of disks failures I have seen
are at power up.

I am supplier agnostic, with Seagate and IBM/Hitachi being a
perferance at the mo. But have Samsung/WD drives too. Oh - I also
have lots of backups, my preferance being a USB enclosures ~ these are
cheap and mobile.

Re: [mythtv-users] RAID5 ATA IDE hardware card recommendations for mythbackend machine

2004-12-16 Thread Greg Cope
Just 2 pence worth to the discussion;

a) Hardware solutions like the 3ware ones only need to use the PCI bus
once for a read/write, whilst the software solution will need to chat
to each disk controller for each disk as I understand. On most file
servers this is not an issue, but might be on a monster mythbox!

b) I've used software raid without issue for years - and have moved
disks from hosts that died without issue. So unless you have muliple
controlers beware a controler dying and leaving you stranded.

c) Never underestimate the power of a good restoration (and associated
good backups, but you do test you backups with a restore right!)

d) These days get a USB enclosure with a 200~300Gb drive, or use
anotherhost to send backups to... "cheap as chips " compared to DAT
tapes, ot the hassel of loads of DVD's - plus you can take the USB
drive off site, or remove the disk and cycle it with another. The
realms of backup parania are amazing.

Less than 1 pence (sterling) per point, which has to be a bargain,
even with the dollar at such a low rate!
