[mythtv-users] Firewire with Shaw Cable in Western Canada

2005-04-10 Thread Greg Miller

Has anyone tried
to connect to a Shaw cable box with firewire? I sent them an email asking if
their boxes supported firewire. The first reply indicated that the firewire
ports on their boxes were active but not supported by shaw. I asked them another
question and they replyed saying the the firwire ports were not
active.

I get the
impression that the ports are working but they are afraid that someone may
consume 5 minutes of their time asking a question.

I don't even care
about HD, I just want high quality regular tv.

[mythtv-users] Xbox locking up.

2005-03-14 Thread Greg Miller

Is anyone else
having issues with Mythtv locking up on an Xbox? I seems that every time I start
flipping through the guide it locks up. I can't even ssh into the unit.  I
am running xebian 1.1.

I considering
updateing to the cvs version but I have a feeling the xbox is missing some of
the required components to build it from source.

RE: [mythtv-users] Great quality TV-out on a PVR-350?

2005-03-11 Thread Greg Miller
I am running Gentoo and just added:

post-install ivtv /usr/bin/ivtvctl -j reg=0x6c,val=0xfa -d
/dev/video16&&/usr/bin/ivtvctl -j reg=0x2d,val=0x38 -d /dev/video16

To my /etc/modules.d/ivtv file.

Works great now...

I'm interested in this as well. I had a similar experience as the
original poster, only my video was dark and green instead of dark and red.

I'm having a similar problem. I believe it is related to the ivtv fb driver.

Could heat build-up be the problem?

[mythtv-users] Lockup with PVR-350

2005-03-11 Thread Greg Miller
Hi I am running Mythtv-0.17 with Gentoo on a Soyo C3/700 PC with a Nexux-s
dvb card and a PVR-350. The backend will run for days with no issues. As
soon as I fire up the frontend through the PVR-350 I get lockups. Some time
it will run for an hour, sometimes it only runs for a minute.

Has anyone else had this?

Are there any recomended steps to diagnose the problem. I am guessing it is
related to the framebuffer as the problem only appears while X/Mythfrontend
is running.

ivtv-osd: Framebuffer module loaded (attached to ivtv card id 0)

RE: [mythtv-users] OT - Codec for NEXUS DVB MPEG

2005-03-10 Thread Greg Miller
Try using a DVD player application. I found that even with the right codec
the picture was squished (tall and narrow). I prefer PowerDVD. Once you
install the package you will have the codec.

Subject: [mythtv-users] OT - Codec for NEXUS DVB MPEG

I'd say this is only a small bit off topic - its not a MythTV issue.

When I record programmes on a Nexus-S DVB card they play perfectly through
the PVR350 output - so it looks like the PVR likes the MPEG2 (?) that the
Nexus-S provides.

But I cannot play the files through Windows Media Player and MythWeb (using
MythTV filters and myth:// URLs in MythWeb) - Windows Media player complains
about no codec to play back the files with. Recordings make with the PVR350
play back perfectly in Media Player so it looks like there is a difference
in the file formats from each card.

Does anyone know of a Codec for Windows that will playback Nexus-S DVB MPEG
files?

Thanks,

Derek

I'm assuming by reference to Rogers you are in Canada somewhere. What
"completely free NTSC/ATSC" material do you have access to? Major US
networks? OTA? How, in Canada? I have given though to HD/ATSC but I just
don't think there will be enough content here in Canada to make it
worthwhile. Maybe I am wrong.

[mythtv-users] Trouble shooting Lirc...

2005-03-09 Thread Greg Miller
Hi I am trying to get Lirc up and running on my system. I'm running Gentoo,
Mythtv 0.17, PVR350, Nexus-S DVB. They system works reasonably well (a few
DVB issues but it's new code.. )

I followed the instructions as close as I could, because I have sort of a
combo system with DVB and the pvr350. When I try to test lirc with irw, I
just end up back at the command prompt. If I try it again I get a "connect:
Connection refused" error.

If some one could recommend some steps to test the various components that
are required to make lirc run, I would really appreciate it.

Greg

Additional info:

I installed Lirc with the gentoo ebuild. Lircd is running and I have the
lircd.conf for the newer remote in /etc with the following permissions:

I also have LIRC_OPTS="--with-driver=hauppauge" in as the last line in my
make.conf. Would I be better of with the source?

RE: [mythtv-users] Gentoo, PVR350, ivtv and Xorg 6.8.0 NO ivtvdev

2005-03-07 Thread Greg Miller
Thanks to every one that offered sugestions.

I tried to do some tests with the frame buffer by itself and it was
unresponsive.

As it turns out I had this in my /etc/modules.d/ivtv to clean the random
junk off the screen.

post-install ivtv-fb /usr/bin/ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -alpha 0

And that was the problem. I commented it out, rebooted, and X is working.

[mythtv-users] Gentoo, PVR350, ivtv and Xorg 6.8.0 NO ivtvdev

2005-03-07 Thread Greg Miller

I hope that this
isn't too far off topic. I am posting here because I assume that others are or
were in my position. I recently decided to bite the bullet ate buy a PVR 350
mainly to get a decent quality TV output. I am running Gentoo withe kernel
2.6.8, DVB and Xorg 6.8.0. I was able to emerge ivtv and get the ouput
of the pvr350 working, and even fixed the purple & green issue. I spent most
of the day serching the net for a solution to getting the X11 running on the
framebuffer. If I follow the ivtv readme it says to use "fbdev" as the driver in
the xorg.conf that generates an error. Other info sayes to use ivtvdev. I
finally found ivtvdev in binary form (I think it is for xfree86 though) and that
generates another error.

Is there a way to
get X running on ivtv with Xorg.

Any tips would be
greatly appreciated.

Greg

RE: [mythtv-users] Failure to connect to remote backend

2005-02-26 Thread Greg Miller
It's in the Mythtv Documentation. I can't remember the name of the file but
you have to change the bind address from 127.0.0.1 (or what ever it is) to
your IP. I had the same problem with Gentoo.

Most new packages of mysql have network access turned off by default.
Check your mysql startup files and make sure that they allow network access.
On Mandrake (and Redhat, I think) that is set in /etc/sysconfig/mysql, but I
don't know about Gentoo.

RE: [mythtv-users] xbox Mythtv & twinhan or Haupage remote?

2005-02-16 Thread Greg Miller
Here's a thought...one of my dvb cards is a twinhan that came with a remote
and USB ir receiver. Has any one ever tried this receiver & remote on an
xbox? I would assume that I would need to boot straight to linux as XBMC
would not recognise it. Can some one pint me in the direction of the lirc
config files for the Myth and a twinhan remote.

This does not seem to be true, at least not on the Microsoft XBox DVD dongle
that I have. Using the extended codes for the type of receiver that the
XBox uses, I was able to program every button (about 30 of
them) on a All-In-One URC-6131 remote control to have a unique code, and all
buttons were recognized by lirc. (I used the same technique as I have on my
website, www.vulturesnest.net, except that I used the Microsoft DVD code,
instead of RC-5).

I expect that the Radio Shack remotes would work the same way, since they
use the same codes.

I know that discussion regarding decrypting DVB feeds is not

RE: [mythtv-users] PVR-350 vs FX-5200 TVOut

2005-02-16 Thread Greg Miller
This is the most interesting thread I've followed for a long time. For what
it's worth I am running Mythtv with DVB in Canada and gave up on getting
good quality s-video out. I also have an Expressvu PVR that gives Excellent
picture quality and it has become the benchmark. The problem with the PVR is
that it is a piece of junk and only records based on a timed event. In an
attempt to get decent quality video from Mythtv I went and bought a used
Xbox ($139CDN) and loaded up a frontend. It is a little slow (only 64mb
memory) and the picture quality is pretty good (way better that the nVidia
5600 and ATI Radeon 9200 I tried) but not as good as the PVR.

I find it quite amazing that High Quality S-Video is so difficult to
achieve.

I use a Radio Shack 8-in-1 Universal Remote (15-2116) to control all of my
AV equipment: a myth-xbox, Sharp Aquos TV, and a Phillips DVD player.
It's cheap, has a pretty good set of buttons, and supports the XBox DVD
remote protocol (code 0522):

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?cookie%
5Ftest=1&catalog_name=CTLG&category_name=&product_id=15-2116

The drawback to using the XBox DVD receiver is that it only responds to the
subset of buttons that are on the original remote, so you are stuck
(AFAIK) with only a subset of functionality. Changing the lirc config won't
give you access to more buttons because the hardware doesn't pass along all
of the received signals. This means that you won't be able to use a remote
to access all of the functions you see in keys.txt. For me, having pause,
menu, info, exit, and the arrow keys is enough, but it sounds like you want
more functionality, so you should look into USB-IR receivers.

For what it's worth, I picked up a couple ox used Xboxes at a local pawn

believe it also has an NFS install option). They are a litthe sluggish with

That's close.

LTSP ises PXE boot, which gets it an IP address, then it does tftp to get a
minimal loader, and then gets the kernel. Everything else is done ive NFS
from the "server". Works like a charm. Once loged in to the diskless
machine, you are "on the host" for all user practical purposes.

Ues, that's why I asked. I don't have that hardware. LRSP supports a variety
of hardware, so I was thinking of looking into using it.

Thanks.

I'd go with gentoo myself. AFAIR, GentooX is no longer supported by the
main gentoo distro, and since gentoo itself will now install ok on an xbox,
I think gentooX is no longer needed. Besides, Gentoo rocks.

RE: [mythtv-users] Xbox Gentoo Vs GentooX Vs Xebian

2004-12-01 Thread Greg Miller
That is exactly what I tried. For some really weird reason it fails every
time. I went through the perl script to try and narrow down the problem. I
noticed that the first thing it did during the config step (installing
Xebian went fine..) was do an apt-get update. I tried running this manually
and it came back full of errors like the one I described. I know that the
network works because I can use lynx to go to the same sites that apt-get
has problems with.

I changed the sources.list locations for the debian part to the local
university and it worked better, but it still failes on the Mythtv sources.

[mythtv-users] Xbox Gentoo Vs GentooX Vs Xebian

2004-12-01 Thread Greg Miller

Hi, I just picked up
a couple of used xboxes to used as frontends for Mythtv. I am now trying
determine what Linux distribution I should use. I tried Xebian because it looked
like the fastest way to setup s dedicated frontend. For some reason apt-get is
failing. I see errors like "stdin: not in gzip format" I am running via ssh and
the network seems to work for other apps (wget, lynx).
Now I'm considering
a Gentoo flavor. With the two choices being Gent00 and Gentoox, does one have
much of an advantage over the other? Is Gentoo going to be more difficult than
GentooX (drives, lirc, mpeg chip support, etc...)

and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Greg.
