[mythtv-users] Network, FC4, and APT issues

2005-08-28 Thread J. Scott

I have a couple of issues I'm dealing with on my
myth box right now. I hope someone might be able to lend a hand.

1. Every time I restart the computer, access to the
internet fails. I can still transfer files to other computers on my local
network, but internet access is blocked. When I start my browser, it comes back
almost immediately with "www.google.com could not be found"

Interestingly, all I have to do to enable internet
access is to open the 'Network' control panel and select 'Save' from the menu
(without making any changes in the settings). Internet access is then
immediately enabled until I restart the computer again.

2. I just upgraded from FC3 to FC4 (via disc) on my
backend/frontend. Now when I try to run APT, I get an error that 'The program
version 4.3 doesn't match environment version'. I updated the sources.list file
to reflect FC4, but this didn't fix the problem.

I also get an error about a lot of unmet
dependencies when I try "apt-get dist-upgrade". It recommends running "apt-get
--fix-broken", but when I do that it implies that it is going to uninstall half
of my system. Note that when I try to run yum I get the same type of
errors.

So here we are... Is there a reasonably easy fix
for these problems, or do I just need to do a clean install of FC4 and myth? If
I need to do a clean install, how do I keep my existing recordings and program
scheduling?

Thanks a bunch for everyone's
help!

[mythtv-users] New install freezes hard on mythfrontend startup

2005-07-24 Thread J. Scott
I've just completed a new install using Fedora Core 4 and Jarod's
Guide. The install went smoothly, but I'm having hard lockups when I
start up mythfrontend or mythtvsetup.

This is a frontend only box. The first time I ran mythfrontend, I
successfully entered the configuration screens, and input the ip
address and mysql information for the backend server.

Now, when I start up mythfrontend I get the gray G.A.N.T. background,
but nothing else- no buttons, icons, message boxes, etc. The box locks
hard and won't respond to any keystrokes.

I can't figure out what's driving the problem- could be an issue with
fonts? Problem with the GANT theme?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

[mythtv-users] apt-get on FC3 still broken?

2005-07-21 Thread J. Scott
I've read several messages over the last few weeks that doing a
dist-upgrade on FC3 results in apt-get being removed from your system

Well, that happened to me last night on a fresh install of FC3- I've
lost my apt.

I searched high and low, but couldn't find a fix for the problem (or
at least one that I could understand.)

Could someone tell me how to fix this, in layman's terms? I've
installed a few mythTV systems on Fedora, but I'm still very much of a
linux novice.

Do I need to use FC4, or is there an easy solution for my FC3 system?

Thanks a bunch.

[mythtv-users] Channel Surfing is a Myth

2005-06-23 Thread J. Scott
I'm not real clear on why anyone would channel surf and try to figure out what
to watch via their mythtv box. First of all, you'll have to watch commercials
(blech!). Second, you have to deal with the pause between channels, not to
mention the fact that your box is running hard for no reason, having to
compress a video signal, write it to disk, read it from the disk, decompress
it, and deliver the video output.

At our house, on the rare occasion that we watch live TV, we just bypass the
MythBox. On the even more rare occasion that we find something on live TV that
we might want to pause or be able to rewind, we'll just switch over to Myth.
I'd say that happens maybe once every 60-90 days, max.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but 'Live-TV' is by far the least used function on
my Myth.

(That will be $0.02 please)

[mythtv-users] PVR-150 Picture Quality

2005-04-20 Thread J. Scott
I'm currently running MythTV 0.17 with a WinTV Go tuner card. The box has plenty of horsepower for video processing, with an Athlon 2500+.

I'm curious whether the PVR-150 card gives you better picture quality than the WinTV Go, or if it just relieves the pressure on the CPU.

I guess I'm looking for a reason to buy a PVR-150!

[mythtv-users] I Think I'm Bleeding (0.18)

2005-04-18 Thread J. Scott
Sorry for the noobie-ness of this question, but I couldn't figure out the answer from the recent threads. Will 0.18 eventually be released as stable, or do I need to change my apt-get level to 'testing'? I don't mind waiting another week or so to get 0.18 if it is more likely to be bug free.

Will there be a mythtv-suite for 0.18, or will we need to install the packages separately?

Thanks.___

Re: [mythtv-users] Fw: LIRC is killing me!!!

2005-03-30 Thread J. Scott
Bingo, Todd- Thanks a million!

Here are the steps I took, for the benefit of others...

1. I removed all of the lirc references from my modprobe.conf file
2. I edited one line in /etc/init.d/lircd (approximately the 10th line)

I replaced the line:
   daemon lircd $LIRCD_OPTIONS

With:
   daemon lircd --driver=mp3anywhere --device=/dev/ttyS0

Everything works perfectly now.

This was a real doozie. I spent several days trying to figure this one out.
Jarod's guide is pretty confusing on this point. It reads to me that any device
plugged into the serial port needs to have lirc_serial in the modprobe.conf
file. This is absolutely not true.

That said, Jarod's guide is a life saver!

This sounds like what happened to me. I was trying to use the Sigma
Designs remote that came with my MPEG2 decoder card. I don't use the
card any more but it has a nice remote that plugs into the serial port.
What I found out is that my remote doesn't need the lirc_serial driver.
I took all of the lirc entries out of my modprobe.conf. Then I edited
the /etc/init.d/lircd file so that lircd ran with the
"--driver=pixelview --device=/dev/ttyS0" options instead of
$LIRCD_OPTIONS because I didn't know where $LIRCD_OPTIONS got set. I
expect your remote would use a different driver and if it were plugged
into COM2 you would use /dev/ttyS1. I guess the lirc_serial driver is
mainly for homebrew recievers.

If I might ask, what remote did you switch to? I'd love to find another
inexpensive RF solution.

For what it's worth, I could nbever get my lola X10 remote to work
when I upgrade my kernel from 2.4 to a higher 2.4 kernel. Not sure
what kernel you were using before, and I know these are different
remotes (mine used a usb RF receiver), but I just gave up and got a
better remote that was inexpensive.

Yep. You'll need to install the gatos ati.2 drivers in order to get Xv to
work on that setup. I have a similar machine that I press into service every
once in a while. It's a Celeron 500 with an onboard ATI RageIIc. It played
video at 1 frame per second until I installed the gatos drivers. Now it's
capable of playing 480x480 mpg4 nuv files in Myth without dropping frames.

To install the binary drivers, go to http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ati.2.php
and follow the instructions under the "Installing ati.2 binaries" heading.
It's as simple as downloading the appropriate tarball, unpacking it to the
correct location and restarting X. If I can do it, anyone can :-)

It's certainly not a wonderful card, but I have used something
similar for a Mythbox. It does support Xv, although when I was playing
with it the interlaced driver with Xv was broken. I had to use the GATOS
drivers to get around that bug, IIRC. Check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log to
see if it contains the line:
(II) Loading extension XVideo

Also, check to see that the output of 'xvinfo' displays something
other than, "No adapters present," or whatever. Should be lots of stuff
like:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
Adaptor #0: "ATI Radeon Video Overlay"
 number of ports: 1
 port base: 61

Also worth noting...I've used Celeron-flavord machines before, but
it was a dual-CPU beast at 450MHz. You will probably be able to play on a
single Celeron, but there won't be much left over.

Re: [mythtv-users] Recycled PC as a frontend- disapointment?

2005-03-13 Thread J. Scott
When I run lspci I get the following

VGA Compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP (Rev 7a)

My XF86Config-4 file has several references to ATI, but nothing more specific
than that.

I tried some google searches on the lspci output, but didn't find anything
helpful.

Thanks.

This is critical - you need xv capabilites.
I suspect you are using the wrong X driver.

type:
lspci

and look at the output (VGA line!) you may need to Google to interpret it.
(eg my Radeon 7500 is reported as an RV200 'cos that's the chipset id)
Then see what your X config is using (look in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4)
This is probably a generic X configuration problem.

[mythtv-users] Recycled PC as a frontend- disapointment?

2005-03-12 Thread J. Scott
I just installed knoppmyth on an old PC that I'm not using any more, with the intention of using it as a second frontend on my existing mythtv setup.

My preliminary results are very disapointing. When I play back prior recordings, the video is choppy, at maybe 10 to 15 frames per second. The recordings are made in mpeg4 at 352 x 352 resolution. I even tried turning off deinterlacing, but performance didn't improve.

Is there something else I should try, or am I just expecting too much from this old machine?

Note that before deleting windoze from the machine, I played a fairly high resolution divx file on windows media player. It played almost perfectly, with just an occasional hiccup on fast motion scenes. This gives me the impression that the machine has sufficient power...

The machine's specifics:
HP Pavillion 4550z
   Celeron 466
   128mb Ram
   10 Gb Hard Drive
Onboard video (no TV output set up yet)
   10/100 Ethernet hardwired

Running MythTV 0.16 on both the front and backends.

Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong, or how I might be able to improve performance?

Thanks!

[mythtv-users] KnoppMyth on front end, Jarod's install on backend?

2005-03-12 Thread J. Scott
I'm potting together a second fronetend to add to by existing front-end/back-end system I built using Jarod's guide.

For simplicity's sake, I'd like to give Knoppmyth a whirl. Can I run Knoppmyth on my front end, while running my traditional install on my backend?

PS- I'm still running MythTV 0.16, and I believe KnoppMyth is also at 0.16.___

[mythtv-users] Article on MythTV in the latest PC Magazine

2005-02-18 Thread J. Scott

John Dvorak's column in the most recent PC Magazine is devoted almost entirely to MythTV. It has a pretty negative slant like the NYT article, implying that MythTV developers and users are trying to break the law.

I haven't been able to find a link for the article- it doesn't seem to be available on the net yet. It is on Page 79 of the March 8 issue of PC Magazine.___

[mythtv-users] The next version of MythTV

2005-01-19 Thread J. Scott

I had a couple of ideas for future versions of MythTV. I don't have any coding ability, but maybe these ideas will catch someone's eye and they can run with them...

1. It would be great to press a single button on the remote to switch directly from one Myth activity to another. For example, you could have a button on the remote for live TV- when you press it, no matter what you are doing, you are immediately transferred to watching live TV. You could have specific buttons for Music, Video, Recorded Shows, Weather, etc... This would essentially eliminate having to navigate through the menus.

2. In MythWeather, it would be nice to have a forecast for today. Currently there is just a page with current conditions, then the forecast for the next few days. It would be nice to see the forecasted high & low for today, probability of precip, etc.___

[mythtv-users] Still using 0.15- upgrade to 0.16 or wait for 0.17?

2005-01-07 Thread J. Scott

I never upgraded to 0.16, but am itching for some of the features it offers. Should I go ahead and make the plunge, or should I wait for 0.17?

I figured I'd wait, but then I thought there might be some issues/incompatibilities moving directly from 0.15 to 0.17.

Any recos?
