This system is normally only used as a backend for an xbox frontend. I recently replaced the WinTV card with a PVR-500MCE. All I did was remove the WinTV card and replace it with the PVR-500 card, then followed instructions to download ivtv 0.3.2s and configure it. I then removed the WinTV card from mythsetup and added two capture cards, one for each tuner on the 500. All of the functionality is working good (ie I can watch live tv, record two shows at once, etc, etc) but the machine randomly reboots itself every so often. It only seems to happen when one or more of the tuners are in use (ie during live TV) and seems to possibly happen more quickly if I change channels alot. In general the audio is working great but it seems like on certain channels (or possibly on every channel but only right before it decides to reboot) I notice some slight audio distortion I have heard of people having trouble with VIA chipsets, but I have read posts where people have had success with the KM400 chipset. I have tried the PVR-500 in a different slot, installed the newest BIOS, verifed that the reboots will occur whether or not the xbox is involved, tried to make sure things are using unique IRQs, etc...here are a couple of questions: 1) Can anyone tell me which modules should be loaded and running for a PVR-500? I'm wondering if the sytem is still loading modules for the old WinTV card...I see references to bttv in the dmesg output. 2) Is anyone else using this motherboard with a PVR-150 or PVR-500? If so what are your experiences 3) Besides adding the new tuner cards and mapping sources, etc...in the mythsetup, is there anything on the backend that I would have needed to switch after I install this card? RE: [mythtv-users] Static on PVR-150 running FC3
Video 0 & video1 = the same thing...its only 1 card...im on 3.5.i drivers and only get 1 now so I think the drivers are evolving more and more 8) video0 doesn't exist until the ivtv driver is loaded. I think what you mean is how can I load ivtv drive on boot...which is add it to /etc/modules file Static on the tuner means you havent set up the channels..im at a similar point but im working on mine still so I cant advise yet -Original Message- From: Jason Luttrell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 1 June 2005 11:15 AM To: mythtv-users@mythtv.org Subject: [mythtv-users] Static on PVR-150 running FC3 I've followed Jarod's guide pretty much word-for-word for setting up Myth on FC3 and have run into a few issues. I'm using 2 PVR-150s and a GeForce FX 5200. First, all I get is static when I set up Myth and enter Watch TV mode. I've set up my 150s in Myth's Capture Devices section as the 250/350 setting, which I'm presuming is correct. The system is recognizing at least 2 cards (/dev/video0 and /video1), and all I get is static on the screen, along with the on-screen programming information. I've even tried the following settings, and now I get static for one second, and then Myth locks up and gives me an error. Maybe this is because I'm still using the monitor instead of the TV right now... # /usr/bin/ivtvctl -u 0x3000 # /usr/bin/ivtvctl -p 4 (I've tried 0 and 1 also) # /usr/bin/ivtvctl -f width=720,height=480 Any ideas from anyone that might know my problem or something good to try would be greatly appreciated, especially since I'm sure someone else out there is running 150s successfully =). Finally, on the annoying side, the /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 devices aren't showing up in the system until I run the "/sbin/modprobe ivtv" command as root. Where can I put this command so it will run as root on startup? Again, any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! The way I'm testing it, is with a dvd player connected to the S-Video port of the PVR-150. However I can't get mythtv to use that port. When I go into Watch TV, it always goes into the Tuner 0 port. When I press 'C' on the keyboard, it doesn't change inputs, it simply redisplays "1: Tuner 0". One time I was able to get it to go to Tuner 1, but it never goes to the other inputs. I tried connecting to the composite video, the S-video, but I can't get mythtv to actually switch to that tuner. In mythtv-setup, I even configured the default port to be (at first) composite 0, then also S-video 0, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. When I go into Watch TV, it always goes to Tuner 0. Why is there no response to the 'C' keypress, which should change inputs? Unfortunately Myth can not retroactively record a channel. So when you flip to a channel and - hey there is a good movie - then there is no 5 minutes to fast forward. So when the commercials come on with their +15% volume then it would be nice to tone them that far down that you can barely hear them. NOT MUTE. Why would I watch the screen, when I can go making coffee, find the book for later whatever. I do have ears too and they will tell me when the commercial segment is over. I realize I could pause and then come back after 30 mins, but what would I do for 30 mins? I mean except for reading and answering emails? Watching TV has a social function as well when you are married. OOh - thats what I could use the 30 mins for - hmm. One thing to keep in mind though is the chipset in the 150 is different than the 250. The 150 needs the ivtv 0.3.x driver while the 250 can use that or the older 0.2.0 driver. The 0.3.x driver is newer and may not be as stable as the 0.2.0 driver. -- Tim www.magicitx.com ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Hi Folks, I'm brand new to the MythTV world, I've been lurking here for a day and read the HOWTO but haven't yet touched the software. I have MANY questions but I'll stick to just the few that are most pressing to me in this first post. I'd like to experiment with this in a system with separate machines for back and front ends. I'll be purchasing hardware for the backend but trying to make do with mostly spare parts on the front end. First of all I'm interested in comments any of you have regarding the hardware I'm looking at for the backend... MoBo/CPU: Chaintech SPT800 Motherboard and Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz Processor http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Edp No=1209284&CatId=1235 Harddrive: Seagate's Barracuda 300GB (Model: 7200.8) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Edp No=1388892 Tuner Card: Hauppauge PVR-350 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=473901 DVD/CD Source: NEC ND3520 16x8x16x DVD+RW, 4x DVD+R DL, 48x24x48x CD-RW http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Edp No=1337277&Sku=N27-1876 Other stuff: 1GB DDR400 RAM, Rackmount Case, LinkSys Gigabit NIC It appears I can get all that stuff for a little under $1000.00 and from what I've read it should be capable of handling the load and then some. Anyone see holes in my plan so far? A couple specific questions about my hardware... 1) that mother board uses VIA chips, I've seen warnings about their DMA, is that a problem of the past or should I go with an Intel chipset board? 2) my backend will be handling record duties for scheduled programs but won't be playing anything back directly, I kind of got the impression that the PVR-350's advantage was in decoding as well as encoding, should I save some money and go with a PVR-150 or 250? 3) is a single gigabit NIC going to handle the network traffic necessary for high quality video? What about when I expand my network to four or five front ends? I think that's enough of the questions for one email. I'll hit you guys with my front end questions once we tackle these. :) Thanks for your time, Ben. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
RE: [mythtv-users] Bottom-end MythTv Suggestions
off list im just going through a similar install...i bought a new pc for the purpose but i built myth on a cele500 with the 150 to see how well things went... pvr-150 has mpeg2 on it so it means your already receiving mpeg2 streams recording at mpeg2 should work on anything over a 266 mhz pci mean really all your doing at the capture point is cat /dev/video0 >> file.mpgso its merely a copy to file... transcoding wont be quick on a small box but transcoding can be ignored unless you are short on diskspace (2terabytes in my PC so i dont bother transcoding...dvd is mpeg2 also so it's the easiest way for me to cut them abck to dvd (tv series collections etc. live tv on the 500 worked np but i have heard that people under 500 have issuestry and see...make sure you have dma on on your harddisks and it's not a via chipset mobo...via suck for dma channels.. other than that as long as you have alsa drivers and video drivers (nvidia/ati if its a new card) you should be fine be aware you need to use mplayer to test the pvr-150 ...xawtv etc do not work with ivtv cardsand the pvr-150 drivers you need atm are on www.ivtv.tv..version 3 drivers unstable.. I'm hoping to setup a system that I can use as an all-in-one (front-end + backend) system. I've got an old pc (amd-k6 w/multimedia 300mhz, 288mb ram, pvr-150 [from my other computer], dvd-rom) and I don't know if I'm ready to tackle all that would go into installing a linux distrubution and mythtv on a system as old as this. I'm looking for suggestions for hardware (mobo, processor, video card w/tv out) that I can throw together with the pvr-150 remaining salvagable parts and get a mythtv up and running in the most simple fashion for a linux newbie.I understand that this will probably be a somewhat large undertaking for someone who doesn't know anything about linux, so I'm ready to put some time into it; nonetheless, I figure that it'd be best to start out with the odd in my favor when it comes to hardware. I've read the Fedora-Myth HOWTO, and I think that's the route I'd like to take, but like I said, I'm looking for suggestions for the cheapest hardware purchases that will still get me a good system.I'm hoping to use it mostly to record, transcode, and watch my video. I don't need it for live tv watching, but that wouldn't hurt! I'm excited to try the different offerings of mythtv, but those are my main NEEDS.Thanks a lot for any suggestions,Adam ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

In the retail chain here in California you can only buy the latest model which is 1.6(b). To use this version you first need to do chip mods to the machine. It wasn't too difficult for me to find someone to do that. The cost was very mild. The chip mod is to hold an alternative BIOS so that the machine can boot to an alternative OS. (Linux in this case.) The preferred alternative BIOS would be Cromwell, but the Cromwell BIOS is not supporting this version of the XBox at this time so I'm stuck. [RANT] An alternative would be to use a hacked BIOS (EvolutionX or others) but I don't really like that idea so I've pretty much given up on making this XBox useful in the short term. Hacked BIOS's are great for kids playing games but it's my opinion, and only my opinion, that adults shouldn't go down that path. I *think* you could make a new XBox work with EvoX but I decided not to spend my time on it and am now looking into some sort of mini/micro-ATX platform as a quiet frontend only machine.[/RANT] Anyway, be careful about just buying an XBox new. If you want to use Cromwell find a 1.4 or earlier.
