CC is teletext for hearing impaired. Not that I'm hearing impaired, it's just my preference. Even when watching DVDs, I like to have the subtitles on. In myth, the command to turn on CC is 'c' appropriately enough. I?m just interested in the best quality picture I can get with mpeg2 encoding and closed captioning from my analog cable signal. Is it possible to do that with DVB or pcHDTV cards? Just wanted to comment/clarify something here. DVB cards (in my case DVB-T) do not just do HD TV, They also do standard definition, SD. In fact, in Australia, it's mostly all SD, as HD is just getting going. The 720x576 mpeg that I get from SD is very good IMHO. You mention using DVB for your analog cable signal, but DVB is for Digital Video. My DVB card will not receive analog signals. In other words, I know for sure that CC text is transmitted in the HDTV OTA signal. Not all programs are closed captioned. The best bet are main stream shows like Late Night or popular dramas (ER, Lost, House, etc) Xine, mplayer, and the internal MythTV video player all decode CC data. As Leo said, for the internal MythTV player the option is 'c' to enable or disable it. For mplayer the option is -subcc and for xine there config file option is subtitles.closedcaption.enabled. I am hearing impaired and addicted to movies :) For me MythTV is one component in the home theater I set up last year and I plan to add the ability to record HDTV shows via a HD3000 adapter soon. For now, MythTV mainly serves as a front end for DVD playback where I let xine handled the CC decoding. The main reasons for using a HTPC to handle DVD playback are to improve picture quality (very noticeable improvement) and handle CC decoding since projectors do not decode CC data. Re: [mythtv-users] Epia 600 or 800 as backend?
I'm using EPIA-MII12000 for backend and frontend. I use a PVR-250 to defer mpeg encoding though. I tried using an analog WinTV PCI card, but the encoding was too much for that. So if you're going to use USB or PCI devices, first make sure they support hardware mpeg-encoding. I highly recommend the WinTV PVR cards. I replaced my analog card with one in about 5 minutes including all the software setup. Transcoding will probably be a long and painful process for an EPIA. EPIA has a fanless MS 8000 which is going to run a little faster than the 6000, but if you are hardware mpeg-encoding/decoding, I don't see much point in it. You could probably work fine with a 6000. IMHO I think EPIA would make a much better frontend. Especially with Linux BIOS and a 4 GB compact flash card. You can avoid a hard drive entirely. EPIA MII6000 has a compact flash card reader. You can boot from it if you install a linux bios. Of course, you can also do a PXE boot, but that wastes valuable space replicating an OS on a hard drive you are probably going to use for saving your mpeg content to. It is also going to further consume RW I/O bandwidth to that disk. The advantages of not having a hard drive in your frontend are obvious. Your frontend can run not only fanless, but super cool without a hard drive generating heat. I don't know if anyone on here had much luck with the unichrome drivers, but mine are not working well at all. I don't even use XvMC for the mpeg decoding anymore. I just use libmpeg2 and my cpu has not suffered much from it. The recent posts of the pundit sound pretty good to me if you're thinking of going small, quiet and more powerful than an EPIA. For the cost of an EPIA, you could get a pundit barebone which is case and motherboard. Hope this helps you make a decision. All displaying and decoding will be done on another, faster system. Before I get out buying the hardware I'd like to clarify some things. - Is such a configuration possible? Will the Epia hardware be fast enough for the job? - Is it possible to do commflagging and transcoding on another host? Preferably the frontend, which scheduled the recording job? [mythtv-users] OT: DVB/HDTV/Analog tuner cards
Hello all, I’ve been camping out on this list just listening what people are saying about their various uses/configurations of mythtv. There is a really huge diversity of configurations. Probably one of the best things about mythtv is this displayed versatility. I’ve been struggling with my own configurations and I’ve tried a few, but still a little behind the curve compared to many of you. I hope you could shed a little light for me. Forgive me for the dumb questions. I’ve tried searching for answers, but I can’t really find anything other than answers for troubleshooting technical issues. Right now, I am using MythTV on EPIA MII12000 with a WinTV-PVR 250. It’s working great for me except I don’t have closed-captioning Argh! What a pain. I noticed nobody really talks about CC on the list much. Maybe no one uses it except for me. It’s a really huge deal for me though. I don’t think I’m hard of hearing, but I find I like to read the conversations more since a lot of the “overacting” on television anymore makes it tough to understand dialogue. Am I going to find a Mpeg2-encoding tv tuner that supports closed captioning out there? I’ve almost reserved myself to going back to my cheap analog tuner and pumping my system up. I found that AMD now makes a low power 64-bit processor “Turion.” It’s like a low power Athlon 64. Goes up to 2 Ghz which should be sufficient for encoding/decoding mpeg2 realtime. I don’t want to use the analog card if I can help it though. Last time I tried it, I couldn’t get sound out of live tv. Must have been something to do with my btaudio driver and ALSA. Anyway, I gave up and that’s how I ended up with the PVR-250. It was just too good at simplifying things for me. I’ve noticed though that there are a whole slew of digital cards that people are talking about using. I don’t know much about them though. I noticed people like to use pcHDTV or DVB cards. I looked at the NEXUS and pcHDTV cards and I just couldn’t figure out if they supported closed captioning well. Does anyone know if they support closed captioning? [mythtv-users] PVR-250 records only one channel
Hello, I believe I saw a thread on this earlier, but I can't seem to find it. If anyone has a link to the thread from the archives, that would be helpful. My problem is that when I watch LiveTV with MythTv 0.18 using my PVR-250, it only plays for about 2 seconds and then hangs and kicks out. I see the following in my mythbackend output: 2005-05-04 21:48:01.391 Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV 2005-05-04 21:48:10.967 joined null string in WriteStringList 2005-05-04 21:48:31.243 Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None I am able to schedule a recording; however, no matter what station I choose using the EPG, it only records channel 4. Very unusual to me. Does anyone have any ideas? BTW, yes. I got tired of my bt878 card and am now on pvr-250. I'm happy that sound finally works. If only I could watch the channel I want for longer than 2 seconds. Leo Przybylski ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
