Guess I just don't watch enough tv ;-)
But seriously, my last "bulk storage" drive I got for just under $AUD200, and
it was 250Gb, if I spent $US400 on storage today it would be insane! (well,
at least hard to justify).
I guess I normally burn anything I want to keep long term as well, and with
mythburn its very easy to get away with less storage.

US$600? I guess it depends on what you want from your mythbox, but I think you
could get it done for less than $AUD500 (Maybe $US400 with the exchange rate
now). Then again, maybe I'm just thinking that way because my mythbox is part
time, I run it on a machine I already had. But I can run standard definition
digital on my celeron 1.7 no problems. HD is a bit jerky of course. But if
you only wanted either analogue or standard def, I reckon you could head over
to www.cheapestpc.com.au and get a machine for about $380, and whack in a
tuner for about $110. That machine would be a lot faster than the one I'm
using, and so would probably do a magnificent job. I imagine if you were
given $US600 to spend on a box, you'd probably get HDTV in there.
In any case, it's one of those things where you can probably spend as much or
as little as you want (depending on how many spare parts or PCs you have).

I think anyone who isn't trying it out due to cost should get their existing
PC, perhaps put a tuner in it and try one of the live CD distros that
includes myth, thats a pretty good way to try before you buy.

Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtv on Debian - is it dead?

2006-01-17 Thread Mark Hetherington
I recently gave up on it and just got the svn. Once you have the dev packages
it needs installed its a snap to compile. But it seems that
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main
is valid, at least it lists packages for me in synaptic, apparently newer than
the csh.dijkstra.edu packages as well. I presume that you would be able to
apt-get the packages from there.

Otherwise, I do recommend a source compile. Some of the updates might be
worthwhile for you. I only had to modify some things on my debian system to
point to /usr/local so it would run.

[mythtv-users] mythvideo:handling large video archives

2006-01-16 Thread Mark Hetherington
I have a large number of files, which on my drive are in "videos/Movies" and
"videos/TV Shows". Basically I'd like to be able to filter out either the
Movies or the TV Shows, either by putting them in different categories, or
making on part "browseable" and the other part not. Now, I figure the
quickest way is to do an SQL query that will find all those files with a
particular path, but is there any way to achieve it through the myth
interface?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Mark

Re: [mythtv-users] Use remote machine to control Myth frontend?

2006-01-14 Thread Mark Hetherington
How about "ssh -x" (with x forwarding enabled)
then just run amorak, it will display on the local machine but run on the
machine you've ssh'd into.
