I have never used any of those tools in myth for
anything besides their intended purposes. I think I

impresses the friends too when they come over and I
can use a remote to select my music from all my cd's
i've ripped or that we can watch tv and pause it while
we run and get refills on beverages. I honestly don't
think there are all that many people using myth for
anything other than it's intended purposes.
Bittorrent on the other hand...

if we are all so squeeky clean, why do we have:

 nuvexport
 CD ripping
 transcoding

built into myth. seems like we should get our story
 straight before kicking up
 a fuss :-)

not objecting to these features or suggesting that
they be removed - use them
all the time. just pointing out that we should not
kick up a big fuss without
 considering the consequences.

Definately easy to do. Check out www.xbox-scene.com

Google around. There are some drivers built in to the
kernel that you could compile. If the distro you

bit of that on your own. Most others are supported by
other projects. Most drivers support many differant

Those new Mini Macs look like a very tempting

Can't offer up any suggestions here. Don't have the

It takes AGES to compile on the xbox, as it only

 to compile myth.
Also, I had very bad luck with Xebian, and better
 luck with GentooX

Check that recent post that showed where on the

Yes there is support for it. I am not sure if it has

In any case, be careful about Wireless-G on the

speeds. This may not be a deal breaker for you, but
I read somewhere that live TV on a wireless frontend
was only doable using Wireless G (54 Mbps)
speeds...The bandwidth on the Xbox ports at 12 Mbps
 doesn't allow for that.

If my information about the USB spec for the Xbox

actually get 54 Mbps from a USB wireless G adapter,
but based on the above info, I am looking for a way

I don't see why not. I have never tried this myself
but I would say you would just go about a regular myth
install and install mythvideo and mythmusic and
anything else you want. You wouldn't be able to use
that distro you were pointed at. You would have to
use something like xebian or gentoo and install a
normal myth install.

I guess you could use myth-xbox but you would have to
edit the files or run mythsetup if its possible. I
think you would need to do an install of mysql too.

Re: [mythtv-users] xbox / htpc switch?

2005-01-05 Thread Matt Picker
Brian I think I understand what you are trying to do.
If I am getting you right I am assuming that your xbox
is using a vga output too? If that is so what would
be wrong with just using rca for that and leaving your
htpc with vga? Then you could just program a remote
(if possible) to control your projector and change the
input the projector uses. Just a thought. Seems like
it might save some money too. Let me know if that
solves that problem.
Matt

--- Brian Bartlow [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I need a little bit of advice. This is a little bit
 off topic, but it
relates to my mythbox connection to my projector.
 And hopefully someone
 here will have a solution.

I have both a mythbox htpc and an xbox in my
 theater. I have one vga
cable running through my wall from my electronics
 closet to the
projector hung on the ceiling. I'd like to get
 something to switch
between the xbox and the htpc using IR.

What seems to be the best choice is to use an IR
 keyboard and a KVM
switch. Then I could program in the hotkey to
 switch between the two
into my programmible remote and everything would
 work. Ideally it'd be
a USB KVM switch so I could plug both USB cables
 into the HTPC so I
could control the HTPC no matter which video signal
 was currently active.

The one problem I'm running into is that if I only
 want to play my xbox,
a typical 2-port kvm switch won't be powered unless
 the HTPC is on. It
gets it's power through the ps2 or usb cable.
 Looking through newegg
it's difficult to determine if any of those kvm
 switches will take an
 external power supply.

Does anyone have experience with this? Anyone know
 of a decent
inexpensive 2-port kvm switch with external power?
 It doesn't even have
 to have usb functionality.

 Is there another option?

Along the same lines, my projector will accept
 component inputs on it's
computer 2 input. In theory I could convert the
 VGA-out on my htpc to
component and then run both the component from the
 htpc and the xbox
through my receiver and then to the projector.

How does the quality compare between component video
 and vga? Is there
 any difference?

Re: [mythtv-users] Setting up MythTV in a wierd way ...

2005-01-05 Thread Matt Picker
I'm no seasoned pro myself but I would go with the
external scsi solution. You can usually find a scsi
card and an external enclosure for a steal somewhere.
Like if you happened to work at a company that kept
old equipment... :) Another solution would maybe be to
isolate the file server from your network with just
either a crossover cable or a small hub connecting it
to your master backend. You would of course need 2
nics in the master. I'm not sure how well it would
work with livetv if you went from
backend---fileserver---backend---frontend. Might
have to make sure you got a lot of bandwidth between
the file server and backend. Good luck.

It's good that you are thinking about two server

 It is not
a good thing to put lots of cards in the same

just a matter of having enough CPU but there is
 PCI bandwidth,

 More than that

You should think about putting cards 1 and 4 in

Re: [mythtv-users] Mini ITX systems

Try searching through the Gossamer Threads mailing
list and see if you can find it there. I personally
don't remember what it was.

Re: [mythtv-users] skip commercials?

2004-12-13 Thread Matt Picker
Any card that you use will work with the commercial
skip. It is actually the software that detects them.
You have to give it time after your done recording so
it can get through the processing. It actually does
it by looking for the blank frames between
commercials.

How do devices that support this feature detect
 commercials? I wonder
if it has something to do with the rating system --
 I think I noticed
my Radeon 9700 AIW (in Windows) display the rating
 before and after
commercials. It's been a long time since I've used
 it though.

Re: [mythtv-users] snd-bt87x and ATI TV Wonder

2004-12-12 Thread Matt Picker
Ian,
I have that same card and i just recently got the
snd-bt87x driver working with it. I didn't really
have to do anything special. The one thing I question
with your setup is that you must have 2 sound cards or
something? If you only have one sound card like I
then the driver will actually register as /dev/dsp1.
That is what mine is set to. In Mythsetup make sure
that for that card you have that device set for
recording. Make sure that it really is /dev/dsp1.
Here is my amixer output too do show you what my
settings are for that device. Other than that good
luck man.

Re: [mythtv-users] Epia MII6K vs MII10K for a Frontend

2004-12-12 Thread Matt Picker
Here is a link to a little info about the case I got.
http://www.caseoutlet.com/shopexd.asp?id=138
It comes with a riser card to allow you to use the pci
slot without loosing the slimness. I got it because
it has a nice simple black look to it that looks like
most other electronic equipment and wouldn't really
look out of place on top of the audio reciever. I
don't really have any issues with it. Like I said in
an earlier post, I am thinking of running my own
little test as to wether or not I could unplug the
casefans or at least one of them. If you are going
without a Hard Drive that would certainly help.

That case has no room for a PCI card. There are
 other solutions like the Hush
 which has a PCI slot
 http://www.mini-itx.com/store/product.asp?sid=HUSH
 but
 its pretty pricey.

I run my M10K without a hard drive and mount the

One of the mini itx cases I've been looking at is
 the Travla series.
I'm not sure how good they are on cooling, but they
 use an external
power pack (to reduce heat) and the site says they
 can run fanless in
some configurations (but doesn't give details of
 what configurations).
Some of the cases can also handle up to two pci
 slots (which is why I'm
interested in them). The pricing is significantly
 cheaper than the
hush case, but the case isn't as pretty. Case
 details are here:
 http://www.caseoutlet.com/shopexd.asp?id=172 and
 they have a case /
 motherboard compatability chart here:

Re: [mythtv-users] Phantom extra tuners listed in Myth

2004-12-08 Thread Matt Picker
When you run mythsetup you have the option to remove
the current tuner and channel config. You could
always just say yes to the tuners so that it erases
them all and you can start fresh putting them in
again.

--- Lane Schwartz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

A couple of weeks ago I did a re-install of my

 have 2 tuners - a PVR-250 and a WinTV-FM. When I
 re-installed, I did a
 database migration (ala this:
 http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-21.html#ss21.5).

Things are mostly OK now, but I have an annoying
 side effect of the
migration. Inside Myth, 4 tuners show up when I look
 at status. When I
do a recording, the recordings are assigned to
 either tuner 3 or tuner
 4.

Now, when I run mythtvsetup, only 2 tuners show up.

Any way to get rid of the two phantom tuners?

 Thanks,
 Lane

[mythtv-users] Next release?

2004-12-05 Thread Matt Picker
Does anyone know when a new release is due? I see the
last one was four months after the previous one. that
would meen we still have another month or so if it
followed that pattern.
I want to get it installed on my epia with the new
hardware decoder support but I don't want to use cvs
because I use xbox mythtv on an xbox and I also use a
frontend/backend on my desktop along with a frontend
on my laptop. I really don't want to go all of that
from cvs.
Thanks

Re: [mythtv-users] *completely* OT : general database app for linux?

2004-12-04 Thread Matt Picker
I am kinda jumping in on the middle of these here but
did anyone recommend openoffice.org yet? I use it for
everything really. It make a great all around
replacement for M$ Office. It has a spreadsheet app
too. Just go to File-New-Spreadsheet.
Hope that helps.

Re: [mythtv-users] Epia, MythTV, and a pile of confusion

2004-12-03 Thread Matt Picker
Jarod,
Thanks for the help all this way. I think I am
getting it figured out. I am a Gentoo man so I just
can't let myself go back to using RH. It looks like
this ebuild for xorg contains the libXvMC stuff that I
need for the hardware decoding and also the unichrome
drivers. It doesn't say if they are the 3d drivers or
not but if they aren't I won't cry about it.

What window manager would you recommend I use. Part
of the reason I want to redo this machine is because
KDE was a beast for this machine.

[mythtv-users] Epia, MythTV, and a pile of confusion

2004-12-02 Thread Matt Picker
Hello, I am trying to get a dedicated mythbox running
and possibly running some frontends on other machines.
I can handle getting the frontends working. I have
done all this many times but things for my setup have
changed so much I don't know where to begin. Here is
what I have:
Epia MII mobo with the nehemiah
Hauppauge PVR-250

I had it all set up the way I wanted before with the
remote and everything working but I was having
problems with it crashing like crazy so I screwed it
up trying to fix it. Now all of the epia stuff has
changed where they don't use the via_v4l_drv anymore.
I am just wondering where I should start. Even down
to what version of the kernel I should run. I know in
the past that my remote wouldn't work with the 2.6
kernel unless I used some kbd modules. What should I
do?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Re: [mythtv-users] Epia, MythTV, and a pile of confusion

2004-12-02 Thread Matt Picker
So this xvMC stuff all confuses me. I looked into the
tv tuner stuff and found how to get the remote working
the way I want so that won't be a problem. What is
the xvMC stuff exactly? Does Myth use this
automatically? I saw something about it regarding
xine. Do I have to use xine or will mplayer still use
this stuff?

To clear things up, correct me if I am wrong, the
Unichrome drivers are open source video drivers that
already contain all the 3d stuff to make gl work
smooth. This xvMC stuff refers to the mpeg decoding
portion of the mobo. Thats all i got so far. Is
there anything special about the Unichrome drivers?
Thanks again

Re: [mythtv-users] audigy2 platinum problem

2004-12-02 Thread Matt Picker
I also have had some difficulty with my audigy. There
are just so many channels to play around with I
litterally spent hours the one night playing around.
I ended up just using the mic input on the back of my
pc and enabling that capture in alsamixer.

You should have a mic capture there. If not I see a
cd analog capture on mine too so you might check again
on that.

What tv tuner card are you using? Some cards will let
you use the btaudio drivers which the 2.6 kernels now
have nicely supported in the alsa section. Thats what
I use now. You just have to be sure to set the
recording device in myth to the new dsp#.

Good Luck
