You could try rpms found at http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/ I would just
make sure you get rid of old drivers before installing... I've used
the versions for 9.2 on my myth box and had no problems. but then
again I had no problems with "make", "make install" either...

[mythtv-users] how does mythtv connect to mysql?

2005-03-15 Thread Michael Wester
Hi-

I've had my Mythtv box working fine for months. Yesterday I started
installation of new hardware (pvr-500) and now for some reason my
database is acting up. I'm having a tough time understanding this
one. Maybe if I knew a little better how the program accesses the db,
I could figure it out. I'm not finding any solutions in the archive.
If you know of one, please kindly point me,

1) When I log in to my x session-kde as root (I know a no no...), I
can start mythbackend and mythfrontend, no problems.
-
2) When I log in to my x session- kde as user mythtv, I get errors that :

2005-03-15 17:22:34.161 Unable to connect to database!
2005-03-15 17:22:34.162 Driver error was [1/2005]:
QMYSQL3: Unable to connect
Database error was:
Unknown MySQL Server Host ' mediabox' (1)
couldn't open db

When I go through the setup, I set ip address, indicate user is
mythtv, and set password to mythtv. Still cannot connect to db.
---
3) from command line:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~> mysql -u mythtv -p mythconverg
I enter password=mythtv and I'm in.
---

I have a feeling that I'm missing a setting somewhere in mythtv? but
where? Thanks for any insight.

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 TV-Out vs Pundit-R DVI

2005-03-10 Thread Michael Wester
Hi-

I've googled some and not really found the answer. Although, this
seems like something that should have been asked before, I'm not
finding it. So, I'm open to advice- or a pointer to a source of
guidance

My current system: SuSE 9.2, Myth 0.17 FE/BE on a Pundit-R, celeron
2.6 and using the PVR-350 tv-out. Recently upgraded to 30" LCD TV
that will do 1280x768. HD ready with component, composite, s-video
and DVI inputs. Currently not a subscriber/user of HD. Just got a
PVR-500 delivered today, so that will eventually be making it's way
into the box... All mpeg2 hardware endoding...

The setup works great, but I'm wondering if I'd see any improvement by
going to DVI for output? I've seen a couple of posts that Xv will
work OK with the onboard ATI 9100 IGP. Or should I keep on with the
PVR-350 tv-out? Not messing with overscan, etc and being able to surf
the internet from the living room floor with wireless mouse/keyboard
would be nice, but not worth a hit in tv performance, as mythtv is the
primary use of the box. But a significant increase in processor
use=increase heat=increase fan noise, and I like the current volume of
the system... Or maybe I just do the experiment myself and report
back? It seems that someone probably already knows that one is better
than the other- and I'm not finding it Thanks,

Unless you've got some reason to need the card inside the box-you
might think about a wireless bridge or gaming adapter. (I'm using a
netgear wge101 and it's OK- but I think there are some better ones out
there) You use the ethernet on the mobo and you can place the bridge
anywhere you need for good reception-and no issues getting wireless
cards to work with linux. In the future, if you need to expand to
other devices at that point- you can add a switch and not have to buy
other wireless devices- unless you're limited by bandwidth... examine
your setup, might make sense for you.

What kind of network are you using to connect the two boxes? I have
been seeing similar issues when I tried to add a remote frontend to my
working frontend/backend system with similar error messages on the
remote frontend. All are Myth v.16, SuSE 9.2. Using PVR-350 on
combo frontend/backend box with no problems recording, playing or
otherwise. Remote frontend box is connected via wireless g bridge to
the network and I'm viewing through nvidia quadro card to monitor. I
see similar issues as you've described, only live tv will also die.
Here's the thing, on the remote frontend, live tv is more stable than
recordings. Recordings will die within 1-3 minutes while live tv can
make it 15 minutes before displaying this behavior. Of course this is
pretty anecdotal data-(I didn't perform the test in triplicate and
record the times or anything- [but I might tonight]) but the
phenomenon was enough that I did make a mental note of it. When I
physically move the remote frontend box and make a wired connection to
the router to which my backend is directly wired (thereby making a
100mbs connection), it did not crash even when watching recordings- It
worked fine for over 30 minutes so I called it stable and moved
everything back. As of tuesday morning when I did this test I was
thinking that my network is a little flaky (even though there are no
other issues with streaming media to windows boxes connected through
the wireless bridge), but there may be more to it. I also feel like
if there was a way to just bump up the buffering a little bit, I'd be
fine... My other thought is to try to transcode, instead of streaming
MPEG-2, smaller files should stream better. But, since my main system
uses the PVR-350 tv-out, I hesitate to even go down this path as it's
not a real long term solution for me. The remote frontend is a
workstation and should get minimal use with myth...

In my box, when ivtv modules were loading, the tuner was being
auto-detected as type=47. I saw similar issues, only a few channels
coming in- and wrong. When I force to type=39 (might be 38, I'm at
work and can't see box from here) then tuning worked... For some
reason the auto-detect wasn't working right.

The tuner=## issue also applies to some pvr-350s, even if it appears
that it's being detected properly. I've got one that I purchased in
november. It's recognized as type 47 using 0.2rc3a drivers, however
only a couple of channels are tuned. If I force to type=38 or 39 ( I
forget which one), in /etc/modprobe.conf, I am able to tune all
channels

[mythtv-users] Menu GUI offset working?

Hi-

I've done a big google search and haven't found a definitive answer.
I've got a fresh SuSE 9.2 install of MythTV v0.16 using my PVR-350
tv-out on a Pundit-R. Everything works great. Only issue I have is
setting GUI offset. Changes to gui width and height work, but offset
seems to do nothing, and my menus are running off the left side of the
screen. I found one post asking where the settings were saved in the
database, but no information regarding a solution. I've also seen
posts where the offset commands were broken in v0.14. Has this been
fixed? Anyone know of a workaround? Also, once I get my notes in
order, I will try to get my install info to whoever was compiling this
info for SuSE... Thanks for any insight.

[mythtv-users] tuner frequency reset/offset/frequency table issue?

2005-01-15 Thread Michael Wester
Hi-

I'm having problems getting a proper frequency table for my Pundit-R,
PVR-350, MythTV system. Pardon the rambling e-mail, but as I'm not
sure what are relevant and what are irrelevant observations.

In chronological order:

December 04. PVR-350 in old epia box, under FC3, tuner works fine,
tests in Jarrod's howto tune to a channel work fine, but I never get
TV-out working right. I install windows 2000 and use GBPVR, tunes
channels OK but locks up over live tv. Epia turned into print
server/squeezebox server.

Jan6 05 PVR-350 into new Pundit-R. Trying Jarrod's howto, I can get
tv-out to work, but channels don't seem to be tuning right, but I'm
getting static- I figure I can try to fix later, must be a setting, so
press on with install. Get stuck on X over tv-out, and tuner thing
intrigues me. I'll try in windows again...

Jan 8 05, Install XP onto Pundit-R. GBPVR works, channels tune
properly, but I really want a linux solution.

Jan 13 05, Install SuSE 9.2 onto Pundit-R. (I have more experience
with SuSE than RH), install myth, ivtv, all with rpms. Everything
works with the exception of tuning channels. Changing channels does
change channels, and changing frequency tables in mythsetup does
change to different tables (no idea if they're correct) There are a
few channels (9, 10, 11) that do tune a signal, however for most
others, it's just static or a vague signal). When I find a channel
that tunes a signal, it's not the proper signal,( for example MythTV
channel 9 gives me the program that my TV normally tunes to channel
17; MythTV channel 10 gives me what shows on my cable tv channel 18)
These are shifted slightly when I change between the various frequency
tables in MythTV, but none of them is correct.
I'm wondering if a) windows messed things up? of if there's a way to
"reset" the tuner. It appears that the tuner is changing in response
to freq table changes made in myth, but just not to one that works for
me. I've tried all the US options available, and none works. I know
there are sonm issues with new tuner types, but my tuner 47 seems to
be recongized fine. Anybody have suggestions on how to troubleshoot?
I've posted to both ivtv and myth sorry for the double posts for some,
but , I'm stuck here and not exactly sure where the problem lies.
Thanks- Mike

Hi-

Any advice for getting PVR-350 tv-out working? I fought with FC3 for
a few weeks and am in the process of installing SuSE 9.2 and will try
there. I'd gotten bits and pieces working in Fedora , but never the
whole thing (ivtv, lirc...) in the same install... So, any hints,
howtos, suggestions would be appreciated. I was going to install from
rpm using apt as described http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/mythtv.html,
but if you can suggest specific versions of ivtv, that you know work,
I might be tempted to start from scratch. Thanks for any insight,

Re: [mythtv-users] Which Distribution?

2005-01-13 Thread Michael Wester
Hi Bruce-

I'm just setting up SuSE 9.2 on a new Pundit-R with a PVR-350. Any
tricks that you can pass along? I'm currently doing apt upgrade as
described http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/mythtv.html and will install
ivtv and myth from rpms using synaptic. I hope to use PVR-350 tv-out.
Have you been down that path? I've fought with FC2/3 for a few weeks
but could never get everything working right. Thanks for any pointers
or insight.

Mike
