[mythtv-users] Scaling HD output

2005-11-07 Thread Seth Heckard
I have a HD tube TV (Sanyo HT32744) which is 1080i native but supports
720p via upconversion. Attached to it I have my Myth computer with a
FX5200 outputting to DVI, and then connecting to my TV via a HDMI
adapter.

Now, in my area ABC and Fox are 720P. I have a 1280x720 modeline that
works perfectly and allows me to watch the recorded shows in full
glory. There's no problem there.

My problem is with 1080i broadcasts. I can't get a
1920x1080i/1920x540 modeline to work to save my life, as I get a
picture with too much flashing and artifacts. So, I've decided while
not ideal, in order to get a working picture I'd like to be able to
have Myth scale 1080i content to a 1280x720 output. It seems like
this should be possible, but I can't get it to work. All it does is
output the 1080i signal sans scaling, which chops off a third or so of
the image to the right.

Is there any way to have Myth scale down 1080i output? Or is this
something that is not possible. If it is possible, how do I go about
enabling it?

Also, I have been having problems triggering the automatic resolution
switching for 1080i broadcasts. It doesn't seem to work, as if the
file is not being recognized as 1920x1080, which is the size I have
set in the config. Viewing the verbose mythfrontend output, I see a
few references to 1920x1088 while playing the file. Where are the
other 8 pixels coming from, and is this possibly why the resolution
switching is failing? If I open the file in mplayer or xine it
reports as 1920x1080.

Thanks, Seth

[mythtv-users] Nvidia drivers and 1920x1080i?

2005-10-27 Thread Seth Heckard
Is 1920x1080 known to work with any Nvidia drivers over DVI? I've
tried driver version 7676 with a FX5200 card and all I can get is a
very messed-up screen. I tried both interlaced and progressive with
the same results. If anybody has a modeline that works, I'd
appreciate it.

Also, if this doesn't work, and I'm forced to use 960x540, Myth should
scale down the 1080i stream to 540p, correct? Because that's not
happening for me now, although I haven't looked much into it.

I was able to pin down the HD channels and can watch them via azap/mplayer.

Since Comcast doesn't seem to report PSIP data (except for one
channel), I spent most of tonight figuring it out. This is what I
came up with:

channum / channel / freqid / mplexid / serviceid
803 / WSBDT / 111025000 / 23 / 3
804 / WAGADT / 63300 / 18 / 21
806 / WXIADT / 69900 / 31 / 3
807 / WTBSDT / 111025000 / 23 / 10
809 / WGCLDT / 69900 / 31 / 10
813 / WATLDT / 65700 / 26 / 2

I just used the default channel numbers that Zap2It gave me, and I
made a new channel lineup of just those 6 channels. I already have a
PVR 250 setup, and I assume the two can coexist. I added the above
information to the mythconverg database from information I found from
other threads on this list.

However, I can't do anything in Myth such as live TV with DVB. If I
try, this is the backend log:

[mythtv-users] Air2PC/Airstar HD-5000 channel setup and Myth

2005-09-24 Thread Seth Heckard
I received my HD-5000 card the other day and got it working with
little problem thanks to the guide on http://www.hd5000.com/. By
working, I mean that the drivers load and I can azap channels and
occasionally watch them in mplayer. I am using QAM256 and Comcast
cable.

My problem is that I get too many channels via cable. I can tune
about 200 or so channels, but most are encrypted. The majority of
standard and basic cable channels are simulcast in digital and are not
encrypted, and I receive the networks in HD (2 720p and 2 1080i).

Now, I used the channel scan in the mythtv-setup program which seems
to lock on to a lot of channels, but only gives me WXIA-SD and WXIA-DT
(the NBC affiliate in Atlanta). I have not really looked into it but
I assume it is because that channel is the only one with PSIP info?
Anyway, I can't tune this channel in Myth anyway so the point is moot
(will worry about that later).

My question then becomes, is there any easier way to do this rather
than scan the channels one by one and manually add the ones I care
about? Eventually I'd like to have all the SD channels added into
Myth but for now HD only ones will do. It's going to be awful
time-consuming going through 200-some channels and picking out the 4
HD ones. Am I basically screwed because of my presumed lack of PSIP
info?

My TV has a QAM tuner as well, and I know the channel numbers of the
HD channels if that in any way helps. Is there a list of channel
numbers in relationship to their frequencies or is that fluid? Has
anyone in the Atlanta area attempted this?

Thanks for any help.

Ideally it would be at the native resolution (my TV has HDMI in so a
720p or 1080i resolution would be preferable, although 720p would be
upconverted on the TV), but I haven't had any luck with 1080i
modelines with the nvidia drivers.

Interesting. I had pretty much ruled out an Athlon XP, although I
would prefer to go that route if it could work as well. I can't ever
see myself getting dual HDTV cards though, I barely use the dual
tuners I have now simultaneously.

[mythtv-users] Slowest processor for software HDTV decoding

2005-04-27 Thread Seth Heckard
I know there has been a lot of discussions here lately about HDTV
decoding and processor speeds and such, however I get the feeling that
the recommended 3GHz P4 spec is a little overkill.

Basically, I am asking for the slowest (and theroretically cheapest)
processor that can decode all HD formats, and ideally have headroom
left over for things like commercial flagging and deinterlacing if
required. I could care less about P4 vs. Celeron vs. AMD64 as long as
it gets the job done. For the sake of argument, assume that a Nvidia
FX 5200 will be used with DVI output and no XvMC.

Is there any difference between a 5200 and a 6200 or a 6600 for pure
Myth HDTV use? I don't care about games, simply MPEG-2 decoding.

Some 6200s/6600s have component out dongles. Do any 5200s do? I have
seen stuff that suggests that they can with the proper dongle. Does
anybody even use it?

Especially since some cards are rumored to have MPEG-2 decoding on the
chip, I'd hate to buy the wrong one if the drivers would support it one
day.

[mythtv-users] Where to (really) buy an Air2PC -or- should I get a HD-3000?

2005-03-29 Thread Seth Heckard
I've had a Air2PC on backorder from cyberestore for a while now, and
just checked on the status to see that it's delayed until May or June.
Not only that, but it will use a new chipset that probably won't be
supported initially.

Other than cyberestore and the mythtv store listed on froogle, is there
anywhere to actually get these cards? A lot of people on this list seem
to have them, yet nowhere on the internet seems to have them in stock.
I guess I just missed the boat on this one. There's a guy selling some
Air2PC cards on ebay for cheap, but he says it's an older version that
doesn't work with Linux.

I've finally convinced myself to blow a wad of cash on a new mythtv box
with enough oomph for HDTV, yet the lack of a capture card hurts.

All I care about is QAM decoding. I don't do anything OTA, nor will I
since I live in an apartment and can't put up a gargantuan antenna.
Plus, my cable company is nice enough to provide me with unencrypted
local channels in HD, so why make things more complicated?

I have read that the Air2PC card is "better" in the QAM department. If
I get impatient and go for a HD-3000, would I be missing anything?

Also, would either of these cards be able to capture non-HD digital
cable, assuming it's unencrypted QAM?
