I was able to fix it. Check out

for a script that I wrote to fix the sound issue. This is for the problem
where changing channels fixes the sound problem.

I think it can be the place if there is a page that can group the pages and
create an overview of the pages. Like a MyMythBox with sub pages like
MyMtyhBE and MyMythFE and so on.
In the perfect world, each page has a list of fixed parameters so you describe
the setup. Like the type of case, mobo, cpu, memory, tuner, remote ...
So the user can query: "give me all the sileverstone cases", or "give me an
overview of remotes".

In choosing my frontend I was very interested in the setup of others and why
they choose something. Grouping such information is very handy, even if it
only contains links to external pages.

What's the best way to on include a script? I can not find a way to attach

Is there a place in the wiki where I can describe my setup ?

Have you tried ivtv 0.4.2 and kernel 2.6.15? I installed it for my PVR-500
and the only module it compiled was ivtv. All other modules are merged and
were taken from the kernel. So no conflicting modules anymore.

In theory, you have to put the files in the directory $FIRMWARE_DIR like you

I don't think so. I use debian so it's possible that you have to look in a

I don't have FC4 box, but you can search for a script in /etc with the name
hotplug (try /etc/rc.d/initd./hotplug or an other rc* subdirectory)

I upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2 without changing the firmware. You can try to
enable debugging in firmware.agent (DEBUG line) and/or hotplug.functions),
redo the hotplug proces (/etc/init.d/hotplug restart) and check the logfile

How does mythtv select the audio input?
And it looks like there is a difference between selecting audio input on first

Mhhh it seems to work :) I have to execute "ivtvctl -d /dev/video1 -q 0"
while playing something and wait 5 seconds befor the sound starts working.
"ivtvctl -a" shows no difference before and after executing "ivtvctl
-d /dev/video1 -q 0". Still it does something because sound is working.

Anyway, I keep running
while true; do ivtvctl -d /dev/video1 -q 0; sleep 10; done

Still not working, even when changing audio channels. "Tuner Audio In" is
Input 0, so I need "ivtvctl -d /dev/video1 -q 0.
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.15.1 + ivtv 0.4.2 so only module ivtv is from ivtv,
the rest is form the kernel. Still not working.

Help :(
My last option is swapping the PVR500 for the software based capture card I

Problem is not fixed, but I'm almost sure it's mythtv related.

After powering off the server for a few minutes, I did a simple "ivtv-tune -f
224,cd25 /dev/video0" to tune to channel (it replied with /dev/video0:
224.000 MHz (Signal Detected)) and "cat /dev/video0 > test.mpeg" and I had
sound + video. So the ivtv drivers are working.

Nobody has a clue about what could be the problem ??

Right now I'm compiling ivtv-0.5 to see if that would help.

No, signal HUP means "reload and start a new config file" (a proces can do

[mythtv-users] PVR-500: problems with sound

2006-01-17 Thread Stef Coene
Hi,

I searched the mythtv and ivtv archives, but couldn't find an answer.

I have a brand new PVR-500 that's working like it should be, execept that the
first time I tune to a channel, I have no sound :( After changing to a
another channel, sound is working like it should be and keeps working like it
shoud be. Idem for recordings, no sound.

After a reboot, the first time I go in live-tv, I only get static. After
that, when I go to live-tv, I get a channel but no sound. So it looks that
the first tuning attempt produces no sound and that changing channels fixes
this.

Strange thing is that sometimes, I get sound. I played with it tonight: I
rebooted the box, unloaded and reloaded modules, ... and sometimes I got
sound on my first tune attempt. The problem is I don't know what exactly I
when it worked, it seems random to me :(

I don't think I made an error configuring everything.
More info: ivtv 0.4.2 (loading fine, no errors in dmes), custom kernel,
dedicated backend, debian, mythtv 18.1, recording is fine using a software
based card, ... plz ask for more info if you want.

If no one can help, I will post this to the ivtv mailing list.

I have a cheap "Bt878 Video Capture" so I do everything in software (P3,
600Mhz). The cpu is just fast enough (it's also the main server in my house:
imap, mysql, apache, ...).
For me, the picture is almost perfect. The colors are fine, fast moving
scenes are displayed fine, and so on. I have to admit that I have an old tv.

I ordered a PVR500 that I'm going to pick up today because I needed an extra
tuner. I hope the picture quality will be the same. I will try to make some
screen shots to compare them and keep you updated.

Speeking of screenshots, is there a way to put some static test image on the
coax in to test the tuners ?

You can put library path's that are not default in

In my case, I have /usr/local/lib in it.

I love debian :) But I run ubuntu on my laptop ;)
You can do this:
apt-get build-dep mythtv

And it will install all needed -dev packages for you you need ...

After that you can do
apt-get -b source mythtv

and it will build mythtv automagically for you.

(you need some deb-src in /etc/apt/sources for mythtv of course, mine is for
ubuntu:
deb-src http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy multiverse)

Speaking of tuning, the first time I tried mythtv, I first tried kdetv (kde
viewing program for kde) to make sure the capture card is working. Kdetv can
scan for channels and most of the time, it can discover the name of the
channel. How hard can it be put this in mythtv? It also based on qt.
So you don't have to enter any of the frequency's because mythtv can scan for
them.

The same goes for finetuning. My tv can do this. It scans for a channel and
then you can see it finetuning for that frequency. I think it just tries
some frequency's, measure the signal quality and/or the image quality and it
picks the best frequency it found.

I use mythtv (0.18.1-5, ubuntu) and the mouse is indeed not working in the

My 2 cents ...
If you go for debian testing/unstable, go for (k)ubuntu. I love debian, I run
it for nearly 10 years. I always used testing and unstable for my
workstations and stable for my servers.

Some months ago I installed kubuntu and I was impressed. For me, it's
bleeding edge like debian unstable, stable like debian stable and so polished
that's better then windows ;)
AND it has mythtv out-of-the-apt-repository.

I think it should be fine. All recording is done in hardware. The only thing
that can be a problem is the speed of your disks.

For those that wants a better monitoring than top, take a look at nmon. It's
ported to linux (original it was only available for AIX) and gives you a nice

I "downgraded" my mythbox from a Athlon 1400 (computer in the living) to a P3,
700Mhz (computer in the garage).
The P3 can handle my bt878 based card, but I had to switch from rtjpeg to
mpeg4 (rate of 1800kbit). When I used rtjpeg, the CPU was not powerfull
enough so the video was stuttering. With mpeg4, the myth backend uses 85%
CPU power.
So it seems that the encoding of mpeg4 needs less cpu than rtjpeg.

You need to copy the kernel itself and the modules. The kernel can be found
in /boot and normally starts with vmlinuz. The modules can be found in
directory /lib/modules/. is the output you get if
you run "uname -r" . And this can probably also found in the name of the
kernel.
To be able to boot the kernel, you have to update the bootloader (lilo or
grub). If you use debian, you can use update-grub to update the grub config
file (it scans /boot for kernels). It's possible you can run it on other
distributions too. I don't know.

What I do, I always leave the kernel in place that is installed by the
distribution and add my own custom kernel. So I can choose at boot time the
kernel I want to boot, and of course, I make sure my kernel is listed first.

I think this is greate.

Yesterday I played with kdetv. It can scan the frequency and most of the time
it also can find the name of the station. This is a great feature that I mis
in mythtv. I don't know if it does any finetuning.

For finetuning, it would be handy if you can start livetv in some sort of
debug mode and change the frequency on the fly with some commands. So you
can finetune the used frequency.

Any feedback from a developer if this idea can be implemented ?

Laptop related.
I had to connet the tv and put the tv on the right input when powering up the

it was not working). I also couldn't find a command line and/or a X server

I gave away one of the laptops, but I'm going to retry it again with the other

If tv-out was working, it was a nice frontend with a build in UPS :)

I tried it too. I have 2 compaq armada's (e500). One P2, 300 Mhz and one P3,
450 Mhz (I think). They both had enough horsepower, but I think there was a
problem with the PCMCIA bus not fast enough. The video was choppy. When I
changed the profiles so it uses MPEG4, all was fine. I found out that a
bitrate aboth 5Mbps was too much.
I ditched the project because I couldn't get the tv-out working liably.

Do you enter the frequency in the channel setup ?
I don't know if you use mythweb, but it's really handy for entering channel

I don't know, but let me tell what I did :) All channes are working fine for
me, except for some noice oon "vtm".

In mythtv-setup, I choosed a random grabber (it does not matter which one,
because it never runs).
I use the grabber from http://nerdhero.org/index.php/Howtos/MythTV. Running
tv_grab_be_tvb for the first time fills the channel database with data. I
used mythtv to give the channels a name and a number. The frequency for the
channels in your area can be found on http://www.zenders.be/keuze.jsp.

That's it. Filling all the frequences took most of the time.

This is my crontab line for the grabber:
0 4 * * * /usr/bin/tv_grab_be_tvb > ~mythtv/guide.xml
&& /usr/bin/mythfilldatabase --file 1 -1 ~mythtv/guide.xml

You need to have gd support in php so php can manipulate images. For debian,
the packages name is php4-gd. I think it is called php-gd in FC3.

I can do this, but I don't know if this is a good idea. It means that you
have to run and install mythweb on each frontend to update the mixer theme.

If you give the user running the web-server write access to the myxer
settings, it can update the settings directly. But this is a serious
security risk. On the other hand, I think most frontend boxes are only
accessible from the LAN.

It's also possible to generate a config file that can be used by
MyxerCustomizer to update the settings. So you create a theme with "my"
myxer configurator, download a config file and use MyxerCustomizer to do the
needed changes.

Or "my" myxer configurator gives you a shell script that you can execute.

Mhh, I think I will go for the security risk for now and update the settings
directly. But first I have to add a submenu so you can choose the text
highlighting.

[mythtv-users] myxer theme configurator

2005-06-22 Thread Stef Coene
Hi,

I created some php scripts so you can preview the myxer theme:
http://www.docum.org/staf/blog/index.php?catid=2&blogid=1

You can choose the background, watermarks and buttons. It will generate a
preview how mythtv will probably look. This is not perfect. I don't know
the exact place of the menu and the images, but at least it will give you an
idea how it will look like.

You can run it from my webserver (mirrors are welcome) or install it locally.
It will not update the myxer config files, but it will give you the names of
the used files. You still need to run the Myxer configuration script to, but
at least you have an idea about how it will look like.

I'm no going to spend a lot of time in these scripts because the new MythtUI
will do probaly do a better job. But I think it makes the myxer theme more
attractive then it already was.

Have fun.

The problem is not the image handling with php (my "demo" is working as a
proof of concept), but to get the preview like the mythfrontend menu will
look like. If you want a perfect preview, you have to use the "real" code
that generates the menu in mythfrontend.

So, displaying the background and the watermarks and maybe the buttons is all
you can do with php and/or css.

Yes ;)

The main problem is that's is allmost impossible to do this with php (or any
other language). You can put images together (like the background and the
watermark), but adding text and other stuff so it looks like a "real" mythtv
menu is not possible. Or there must be a way to launch mythfrontend and take
a screenshot from a webpage.

The only solution I see is a menu within mythfrontend where you can do this.
So the rendering of the preview is done with the same code that generates the
menu's.

What about copying the mythtv frontend code that generates the menu and add
some extra keystrokes so you can switch between the options? So you can
quickly choose an other background or watermark.

Maybe this is already / will be implemented in the new MythUI code ?

Something like this:
http://www.docum.org/staf/mythtv/myxer.php
(I know the page is ugly to watch, but it's more the test the idea too see if
it's possible to implement this)

For now, it's only working for background + watermarks.
I have no idea if it's possible to implement the text of the menu. I don't
think you can be 100% sure the text will be the same in php as in mytthv.

Then do a reinstall ;)
You can uninstall a package so the binary's are removed, but the config files
are saved. Or you can purge a package so all files (including config files)
are removed. If you reinstall a package and it finds some changed config
file, it will ask you what to to with it (overwrite it or not).

Linux? Normally, one.
One of the problems is that apt-get is not the tool you should use to install
or delete packages. It's better to use aptitude or dselect (my favorite, but
you need to know how it works) because they will do a better job. They still
use apt to do the magic stuff. They will also delete the downloaded
packages.

I have a php script to displays the images:
http://www.docum.org/staf/blog/index.php?blogid=1&archive=2005-6-18
But I have some problems / remarks with it:

- transparent png's: very nice, but resizing with php is not so easy and
internet explorer can not show them decently

- a typo: it's button_blue_square_flat_bluetwo.png and not
button_blue_sqare_flat_bluetwo.png

- I tried to sort the backgrounds because each color has the same 4 "types",
but then I realised, why not let the user create his own background? Give
him a type and let choose him the color. To be implemented somehow

Maybe some of this is implemented in the new MythUI concept, I don't know.
It will be next week before I can do some more work on this.

If you only download the first cd, you will have the most-used-packages. If
you need additional packages, you can download them, burn them on cd and take
them with you.
But hey, it's your bandwidth, not mine, and this is a mythtv user list ;)

Nop. Just do "apt-get update" to get the updated packages and "apt-get

Yep, you have to create a php_sessions directory.
I don't know where it is needd in your case, but you can look in the error log
of your webserver. You will find an entry for this with the exact path. You
also have to give the web server write access to this directory. To do this,
you have to change the owner of this directory to the owner that runs your
web server.

You have to download something. If you do apt-get install myth, it will
download all you need in 1 go.

You can install from source, but then you still need to download the mythtv
source and all other stuff you need to compile mythtv.
You can download the *deb files on an other computer with a descent internet
conenction and install them with dpkg.

Mhh, 1 cell = 1 stripped down cpu (based on a Power PC) + 8 SPE's. The CPU is
stripped from all extra logic. It will _not_ run power pc binary's. (I'm
not a cpu specialist, but there is for instance no memory protection.)

The real power are the 8 SPE's. You can stream data from SPE to SPE. So it's
perfect for decoding / encoding data streams. 1 SPE can filter the input,
another color adjustment, 2 others can do the encoding and so on.

An other interesing stuff is the fact you have hardware cells (1 CPU + 8
SPE's) and software cells. The software cell can use 1 or more hardware
cells to do the job (in the PS3 there are 4 hardware cells). Combined with
the fact that hardware cells can find each other when they are connected, you
can use the cell in your printer to help encoding mpeg2 streams in your myth
box. Actually, you don't have to do anything, the cell in the mythtv bow
will use the cell in the printer if it need so.

Just do me a favor, and read the papers yourself :) It's a long time I read
them and they are really interesting.

You have to follow the diskless client guides you can find on the internet,
except for the part where you load the kernel. Because you can load the
kernel from your CF card. And that's the only thing you have to put on that
card. And maybe grub or lilo as a bootloader.

You can tell the kernel where it can find it's root filesystem with this
parameter:
nfsroot=192.168.7.14:/export/nfs
You have to put this in your lilo or grub config.

Check the bottom of http://www.kegel.com/linux/pxe.html for some links.

I'ts even worse, if you use the GPL'ed myth library and use it in your
not-GPL'ed product, you have to relase ALL code under the GPL license.
That's why they call the GPL a viral license.

From http://www.d1.com.au/downloads.html you can download the Manual for the
"Home Media Centre. On page 58, you can find the GPL license and this is a
snip form it:

Your Rights Under the GNU GPL

The software used in the Home Media Centre is based on GNU General
Public License (GNU GPL) software, with some further enhancements
and modifications.

This gives you, the purchaser, certain legal rights including the right to
examine, modify and re-distribute the source code without the permission
of Development One. To allow you to do these things, Development One
has placed a copy of the Home Media Centre source code on the unit
itself. In order to access the source code you will need to connect a VGA
monitor, keyboard and mouse to the appropriate ports on the back of the
unit. You can then logon as user ârootâ with the password
âHomeMediaCentreâ. You can find the source code in various directories
under â/root/hmc/â. For further information regarding the software and the
modifications you may make to it, refer to the MythTV PVR Project at
http://www.mythtv.org.

However, be aware that you may only modify and distribute the source
code in accordance with the GNU GPL. Before you do any of these
things please ensure you fully understand your obligations by viewing the
full text of the GNU GPL at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt.

So the software is not violating of the GPL in anyway ..
If someone ownes a HMC, he can do a diff with the mythtv source and see what
they changed. Maybe some changes can be contributed back to the mythtv
project.
Or he can compile his own binary's and resell the HMC, there is nothing they
can do about it.

Why should they not be able to do so ?
Mythtv is software released under the GPL license. If they take the mythtv
source and change something, they have to release the changes under the GPL
license.
They may sell Mythtv, but if you get the binary's from them, they have to give
you the option to get the source. A link to an ftp site is enough (some
argue they can also send a printed version of the source).

They may add extra functions like a plugin as long as they don't use the
mythtv source for there work. They may not link against the mythtv library
(this is a tricky one). If the library is released under the LGPL, the are
able to do so (from http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/why-not-lgpl.html):

The GNU Project has two principal licenses to use for libraries. One is the
GNU Library GPL; the other is the ordinary GNU GPL. The choice of license
makes a big difference: using the Library GPL permits use of the library in
proprietary programs; using the ordinary GPL for a library makes it available
only for free programs.

So, as long as you can get the source under the GPL license IF you buy a
mythtv based box from them, there is no problem.

I don't think that's needed.
But I had a problem this weekend with daylight savings (here in Belgium we
switched last sunday morning). The script I use (tv_grab_be_tvb) to pull the
channel information from the net ran at 1 o'clock. It inserted the time
information as UTC +1. But after 2 o'clock the timezone was UTC+2.
The system was running in UTC +2, but the information in the database was
still for UTC +1. So all time information was 1 hour off. All schedules
were recording at the wrong time.

My solution is to run the update script at 4 o'clock so it wil run after the
time changed.
