RE: [mythtv-users] DVD rip preserving menus
dd only works on DVDs without CSS. Even if you "unlocked" the DVD drive using xine, you would be able to copy the encrypted data from the DVD but not all of the information required to play a CSS encrypted DVD. My next question is whether MythTV can rip DVDs preserving DVD menus and chapters. I've done this in Windows using a little program which makes perfect or compressed rips, then Cyberlink PowerDVD can play these directly from hard disk. I've been looking around but don't see how this is done in MythTV. > > -- > Best regards, > Derek > This was on the list a while back. It will make a perfect copy to the HD of the entire DVD. I found you need to open the DVD with xine first to unlock it and then you can copy it. dd if=/dev/dvd of=/tmp/copy_of.iso bs=2048 xine dvd:///tmp/copy_of.dvd/ ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
RE: [mythtv-users] Calling HD MythTV users who are EFF members -- help in the broadcast flag challenge
Hi Wendy, I am an EFF member and I am also in the process of starting a company to sell media servers using MythTV. I am a perfect example of how the broadcast flag negatively impacts a startup company. The broadcast flag casts a cloud of uncertainty over a business building MythTV boxes. If the broadcast flag ruling stands, the only alternative to building a "legal" PVR that records HD content in digital form is to use firewire on a STB and license DTCP for $14,000 or license the technology behind CableCard which costs $25-$50K. Today I can build MythTV boxes with off the shelf components and open source software but all of that ends on July 1. I would be happy to help out with the lawsuit. Circuit asked us to clarify our standing to challenge the FCC's broadcast flag rule (the rule mandating DRM in HDTV tuners made after July 1, our suit is ALA v. FCC, <http://www.eff.org/IP/Video/HDTV/ALA_v_FCC/?f=ala_v_fcc_summary.html>). The Court wants to see concrete instances of injury. That's good news, because if they get over the standing hurdle, they seemed sympathetic to our arguments on the merits, that the FCC didn't have jurisdiction to make the rule. We've got plenty of good evidence, but more can only help. An organization such as EFF has standing to sue over injuries to its members, so if any of you are EFF members and have built or plan to build HDTV systems in the U.S. and would be affected by the broadcast flag rule, please contact me offlist, [EMAIL PROTECTED], if you might be willing to help us tell the court about your situation. [mythtv-users] List of unencrypted digital cable channels
I have a couple of questions about digital cable. Where can I find a list of unencrypted digital cable channels? Which HDTV cards can receive digital cable channels? I have a DirecTivo and the thought of building a MythTV system with analog cable doesn't appeal to me. If I can build a system using an HDTV card to receive digital cable channels, that's interesting to me. Since no one is shipping an HDTV card with CableCard support, only unencrypted digital cable channels can work with MythTV today. Supposedly, the national broadcast channels (ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS) that are retransmitted over a cable system have to be unencrypted. I have also heard that most of the basic digital cable channels are not encrypted. This makes sense. The encryption devices in a cable head-end are not cheap and the cable companies spend their money protecting the PayTV channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.). What experience do people have building a MythTV system with an HDTV card that receives unencrypted digital cable channels? How many tuners can you put in a MythTV system?
