[mythtv-users] OT: Engadget: How-To Build a Practical HTPC (with MythTV)

2006-01-24 Thread Tyler Drake
Engadget has an article on how to build a "Practical HTPC", and they
chose Myth on Gentoo as their platform =) I just scanned through it,
but thought someone might enjoy it...

Yikes, my mistake. Episode 2 isn't available to anyone except
newsletter subscribers yet. I should have read further in the email
(sorry!), where it says:

"Thank you for signing up for our mailing list and being patient while we
work out all the kinks in our workflow. We were unable to give our
newsletter subscribers an early release last episode, so we wanted to
make up for it this time."

So non-subscribers should be able to download it soon. But do check it
out (you can download the 1st episode on their site). It is an awesome
show. And subscribe to the newsletter if you like the show, so you can
get early releases =).

Some more good publicity =)

>From the announcement email I got:
"Systm Episode 2!

We are pleased to announce the release of Systm episode #2! This time
we feature a how-to on the popular open source based PVR software,
MythTV. MythTV brings you the ease-of-use of a TiVo and the flexibility
of a ReplayTV without any associated monthly service fees. We use the
bootable Linux-based OS, KnoppMyth, to demonstrate just how easy it is
to install, configure, and ultimately enjoy!"

http://www.systm.org/ is the address. You need BitTorrent to download
the files. It's a great show. Check out episode 1 if you haven't
already.

Cheers,

Re: [mythtv-users] DVD

2005-03-14 Thread Tyler Drake
DVD-R works in about 93% of players tested, according to
VideoHelp.com. That is the largest % of all formats tested. I have had
DVD-Rs work in about 98% of the players I have used. Be careful of the
media itself you purchase (lesser quality doesn't always work in all
players, but, then again, neither does expensive). Recently, I've been
using Memorex, Sony, and TDK discs, and all seem to work in my DVD
players at home (a Sony 5-disc changer, a Go-Video VCR/DVD Recorder, a
Go-Video player, and an APEX (cheap!) player)

Same here. I mean the actual Today's Forecast screen shows, sometimes.
But not when I need it (go figure).

I've seen the Today screen too, but even at 7am (when I begin getting
ready for school), it shows Tomorrow. During the day? I usually see
Today.

I was actually looking into (not yet taking on the task, as I am not
really very good at C++, but LOOKING at =)) rewriting MythWeather with
a new source (namely, weather.com, if I can find some easier way to do
it short of scraping the site, as it has international weather), which
would solve this problem.

First, that mobo is freakin' sweet! =) Good choice on memory, Corsair
is a good brand.

My only suggestion? Swap the Samsung 160GB HD for a Maxtor

Hmm. OK. If you want to stick with 2.4, that's your choice, but,
personally, I love my config using 2.6. Works very well (especially
with IVTV).

> everything (ivtv, mythtv, mysql, lame, etc)? [I just don't want to work

Are you already running the kernel you're staying with? (2.4 in this
case). If so, and everything is compiled for 2.4, the only thing you
_should_ need to recompile is IVTV for the new version (I am assuming
you're upgrading to a new version). If everything's compiled for 2.6,
then, yes, you will need to recompile all of it (as far as I know).

I think all are supposed to now...But they were rolling it out in
batches, so if you don't have those yet, you should VERY soon.

On the whole list vs. forum, I say that both are good, but in the end,
I like lists better. I can download them to the laptop and read w/o
internet, I can read the lists from school without drawing tons of
attention with flashing banners (most forums _do_ have them...), etc.

But forums have their plusses too. I think the best solution (for me,
anyway) is Gmail with POP, Labels and Filters, plus the Wiki at
mythtv.info. =)

Just my $0.02.

Just remembered a plus -- being able to edit your posts. Since I screw
up a lot, I'll re-read something, and think "that didn't come out too
clearly," or "will I offend someone with that phrasing?". That is one
of the only huge advantages to forums over mailing lists.
