[mythtv-users] sound not encoding

2006-01-29 Thread mstrimel
hello,
I wrote earlier about this problem, thought I fixed it by changing to onboard
sound, but I was wrong (onboard sound has constant popping so I really need the
PCI to work)

Nutshell:
* LiveTV has no sound.
* If I unmute "mic" while playing live TV, I can hear the audio a few seconds
ahead of the video, so I know the sound is getting to the card. It's just not
encoding it.
* If I play back an old recording, I can hear sound. So I know (?) it's not a
playback problem.

running "mythbackend -v audio, recording" gives:

I've tried running the various messages thru google and the archives, but can't
seem to find anything relevant. [Video works just fine]. Is it a problem that
the backend opens both a OSS and Alsa device? Is there a manual record
command I can try to check for other errors?

Thanks for any suggestions,

[mythtv-users] sound suddenly not encoding -- update

2006-01-28 Thread mstrimel
UPDATE:
After posting the message below, I tried running mythbackend -v audio to look
for more info. I also switched to the onboard sound instead of my installed
soundcard. This seems to have fixed both problems, although I confess to being
completely baffled (I had tried restarting the backend and the machine several
times before writing but it made no difference).

If anyone knows what this might have been, I'd love to hear it in case this
happens again. I've run out of sound cards :)

Hello,
My mythbox has been running great for several months now. Suddenly, it is
failing to encode sound and it also refuses to schedule new recordings.

When I try to watch livetv, the backend log shows "strange error flushing
buffer." If I run mythbackend with the "-v all" option, the log shows a very
long string as follws (not sure if this is an error or not):

2006-01-28 16:22:09.065 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.097 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.260 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.277 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.308 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.359 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.425 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.460 6 128000
2006-01-28 16:22:09.471 Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None

I'm pretty certain it's not a sound card problem, because if I unmute line-in I
can hear the appropriate sound a few seconds ahead of the video feed, and my
old
recordings play sound. I uninstalled and re-installed lame and toggled many
sound settings but it didn't seem to help.

I also have a problem where myth will not accept new recordings ... when I hit
"save these settings," the guide says the show is "not recording." Yet I can
record from live tv by hitting "r", with no sound of course.

These problems seem to have cropped up at the same time but I'm not sure if
they're related. I have searched the newsgroup archives, saw some mentions of
the "flushing buffer' error but no solutions.

Any ideas?
TIA

[mythtv-users] mythgame not starting xmame properly ... so close ...

2005-12-29 Thread mstrimel

>Try running the xmame cmdline by itself and you should see the
>problem. The cmdline is in your error message.

OK, that did help narrow it down. Mythtv is adding a "." before my path to
xmame, so it cant' find the binary. I've rechecked and experimented with the
settings screen, but no luck.

How do I get myth to stop adding the "x"?
[or, how do I figure out what path mythtv is running "from" so I can put a link
there and fool it into doing what I want :)]
thanks,

[mythtv-users] logfiles: where?

Thanks! Once I got the logfiles sorted out, my LiveTv problem was even simpler
than that.

What happened was, a while back when I first ran mythbackend, I ran it as root
(whoops) so it created the ringbuffer with permissions such that the mythtv
user could not access the file. Changed permissions, problem solved!
thanks all.

[mythtv-users] logfiles: where?

2005-10-25 Thread mstrimel
actually, I have 2 problems.

1. I created a directory called "/var/log/mythtv", and made sure that mythtv
has write permissions to it, and restarted several times, but still there are
no logs there. Sorry if this is a dumb question but: where are the mythtv logs
supposed to be?

2. live tv is not working ... I get a blank screen for a few seconds and it
returns to the menu. This process seems to break the connection between the
frontend and backend (i.e., If I try to do other things after attempting
livetv, mythtv informs me that the backend is not running or is improperly
configured ). Everything else works great. I've searched for other posts
about this, but they seem to address much earlier versions of myth or are
otherwise inapplicable (whole system crashes, for example).

my system: $ 200 wal mart box with ubuntu hoary, mythtv 0.18.1 compiled from
source, PVR-250 [although live tv showed the same exact symptoms with a PVR-150
installed]

If I can solve # 1, I'll send more information and hopefully solve problem # 2!
thanks,
Mary

[mythtv-users] Ubuntu mythtv guide?

2005-10-17 Thread mstrimel
>Does anyone know of a good working guide to install mythtv and >devices from

I had a good experience with this one:
http://www.abarbaccia.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,39/

It is not geared toward the very latest/greatest version of Ubuntu but it lays
out the whole process clearly.

There are at least 2 other guides posted at www.ubuntuforums.org (just search
"mythtv howto") ... check those if you run into any trouble with the first one.

[mythtv-users] mythplugins won't compile

2005-09-29 Thread mstrimel
hello,
I have compiled/installed mythtv base 0.18.1 on my Ubuntu 5.04 system and it
runs fine. A few weeks later I am trying to compile mythplugins; qmake works
fine but make fails [error shown below.] I have rechecked that my environment
variables $PATH and $QTDIR are set as described in the howto. I have also run
the errors through google and this mailing list, but found nothing. What am I
doing wrong? something basic I'm sure.

Thanks for any suggestions!

[mythtv-users] directv d10-300 ... impossible?

2005-09-10 Thread mstrimel
I'm trying to get a mythtv box set up for my Mom. She has a DirecTv with a
D10-300 receiver.

I finally found the low-speed data port in the back of the D10-300, hidden by a
black sticker ... but has anyone actually gotten the D10-300 change channels
using this port? I've seen mention on some other lists that the DirecTv
firmware is purposely "broken" to prevent this port from being used.
Supposedly this is different from the d10-100 or other models that are known to
work. Before I buy or solder a serial cable, can anyone confirm that it will
work with the D10-300.

I already tried a USB-UIRT (before I found the secret port ;) but it seemingly
does not pick up the signals from the DirecTV remote. It picks up signals from
other remotes just fine, but to "learn" how to transmit signals for the
DirecTV, I obviously have to get it to see the DirecTV remote.

If the D10-300 data port cannot be made to work, can anyone suggest an
easy-to-set up hardware solution for this (given my embarassing failure with
the USB-UIRT) would it be easiest if I buy Mom a new satellite recever, and
if so, which one is guaranteed to work?
thanks

[mythtv-users] USB-UIRT - cross posted

2005-09-04 Thread mstrimel
hello,
the USB-UIRT IR receiver comes highly recommended on this list so I bought one.
Problem is, whenever I plug in the USB-UIRT, my USB wireless LAN interface
immediately stops working. Seems to be a USB conflict of some kind (??).

Can anyone suggest how I might begin troubleshooting this? The wireless USB
LAN interface is uses the prism2_usb driver ... the model is Microsoft MN510.

thanks for any ideas (even general ones).

[mythtv-users] USB-UIRT and LIRC question - slightly off-topic

2005-01-27 Thread mstrimel
It seems many of you are happy with your USB-UIRT devices under LIRC
(http://www.usbuirt.com/) and there seem to be linux drivers available. I just
set up mythtv ... *wow* ... and now really want to get lirc to work.

Did you have to compile a lirc module for the USB-UIRT? I am using Ubuntu
Linux with a kernel version 2.6.8. I have had no success compiling the lirc
i2c module for my Hauppauge WinTV and radio card (basically, .deb package for
kernel source tree for 2.6.8 not available, tried to use "headers" package,
which supposed to work but lirc still unhappy) ... I know it's supposed to be
possible to compile the module w/o the source tree, I'm just (obviously) not
smart enough to do it!

So, can I use the USB-UIRT and lirc without without compiling a module? Or is
there any other device that would do this? I would happily pay $ to purchase
such an animal, and not think about kpkg again :) I am just a humble end user.
thanks,
Mary
