You probably should have used 64-bit thermal grease.

Theoretically there should be a big improvement, but a lot of the
apps have not been well optimized for 64-bit. They seem to think
they're done when they get it to compile and run. I'm afraid that
until the gamers pick up on 64-bit there won't be too much pressure
to speed things up.

2006-01-21 Thread Chris Ribe
Jumping in on a tangent here, but I am running 32 bit FC4
installation on an EM64T processor for a couple of reasons.  First
of all, I couldn't my x86_64 install CDs to  work.  It took
me about 72 hours in front of the computer to get everything
installed.  I believe the problems were due to bad memory (and a
incompatible power button header on the MB, and a lack of thermal
grease between processor and heatsink), but the install I finally got
to work was 32 bit.

Anyhow, I now have my myth box up and running with an smp kernel on a
P4 630+.  Jarod suggests in FC4 install guide that x86_64 is less
stable than 32bit, and I have not yet heard any potential benefits of
using x86_64 linux for a myth box.

So then, might I see significantly faster transcode times were I
to switch to a 64  bit installation?  The only transcoding I
am interested in is from DVD to mpeg4, if that somehow makes a
difference.

The nice thing about the x86_64 versions of FC is that they support 32bit legacy mode, so you can always use your favourite 32 bitapps. E.g. some time back mythtv was offered as 32 bit rpms, untilJarod fixed some 64 bit issues (now all seems to work fine on 64

I guess I'm just curious as well, why would you run a 64-bit machine
in 32-bit mode? I'm running an amd64 in 64-bit mode without apparent
problems (related to bittedness anyway), it there's some advantage to
running 32-bit I'd be interested.

nvidia has both 32 and 64 bit installers. If you are running in 32 bit
mode (why?) then use the 32 bit installer.

If you really want to test 2.6.15 you can use FC5 test 2 for which

You should be able to just re-compile the nVidia sources that you
already have. Normally just re-running the shell script that nVidia
supplies solves the problems. It should build against your installed
kernel sources, as long as they match your actual running kernel you
should be OK.

Or have the kernel developers been making things "smoother" again?

If you installed the new kernel in some "binary" way you may have a
problem, make sure you have the matching kernel sources linked to /
usr/src/linux.

Right, but I went to get them and they aren't there. The nvidia site

The 'nvidia.ko' module has to be recompiled for every kernel change.

The 'easy way' is to just re-run the installer.

The slightly more difficult way is to --extract-only the Nvidia

It will just compile and install the kernel module. (It does need to

What card, what drivers (generic or nVidia's)? If the latter, did you

If you're using nVidia's drivers you will normally need to re-compile
