Re: [mythtv-users] ASUS Pundit choice

2005-06-30 Thread Etienne SANDRE

What about the Pundit PH3 ?
It has a newer intel chipset (i915), and a PCI-Express slot .

Anyone tried it?

And, another question, which pundit has RCA SPDIF output? Which one has
Toslink Optical out?

Thanks,

Etienne

but picture quality is about as good as my cable system provides.

The audio chip in the Pundit-R is the standard ATI sound chip. It
works fine in stereo. I haven't tried the optical output yet.
Unfortunately it's on the front of the box so it's a bit messy for
tying into the stereo.

I'd vouch for the Pundit-R too, the only downside (now that ATI have
finally fixed the TV-Out support) is the placement of the SPDIF on the
front of the machine behind a concealing door. I've modded mine to
make it quieter (default was just too noisy for my ears, even with a
slow Celeron.) If this is for a non-HDTV frontend, you may find using
a non-D Celeron (which has a lower thermal rating) will make the
machine less noisy.

The SPDIF is fine (no probs at all with mine connected to an A/V
receiver) and as Mark suggests above, the TV-Out quality is fine,
although far from as vibrant as that of the PVR-350 output. Also note
that the ATI drivers for the video card do not support 3D acceleration
which might be an issue for you (the open source drivers do though).

Finally, make sure the one serial port will not be a hinderance - I
soldered my IR receiver and transmitter together to around that
problem) but my system works fine with a DVB card and a PVR-350
capture card.

Required adds: processor, memory
Optional adds: hard drive & CD/DVD (or diskless) , tuner

Only room for a single hard drive, but it has a number of USB and 1394
ports for external storage.

Room for two PCI cards, but it's tight.

It's a bit touchy getting the cables in and hooked up to the hard
drive and the CD. The Pundit-R supports both SATA & EIDE.

NOTE: The Pundit-R is ATI IGP based. This is workign well for myth but
so far I cannot play America's Army on it and it seems that with
certain OpenGL setups the machine crashes.

Take care,
Mark

My interim solution yesterday was to use a little bit of that blue
painters tape - used for mashing off windows and such - and put just a
piece over the top of the led. The light is now dimmer and a more
pleseant indigo rather than the laser beam blue. Since it's just
behind the front plastic it's taped to the chassis. I'll see how long
it goes before it dries out and drops down.

That's why it's the better choice. ATI hardware is great, but the

Re: [mythtv-users] ASUS Pundit choice

2005-06-23 Thread Mark Knecht
I have 4 of the Pundit-R's using the ATI chipset. They are working
nicely for SDTV. I send via S-Video but composite works fine also. I
don't know about those specific resolutions so I won't comment on that
but picture quality is about as good as my cable system provides.

The audio chip in the Pundit-R is the standard ATI sound chip. It
works fine in stereo. I haven't tried the optical output yet.
Unfortunately it's on the front of the box so it's a bit messy for
tying into the stereo.

HTH's,
Mark

Which chipset do you recommend? I can buy Sis651, ATI RS300, and Intel

SiS is by FAR the best choice.

[mythtv-users] ASUS Pundit choice

2005-06-23 Thread Etienne SANDRE

I would like to build a mythbox, the Pundit seems to be a good choice.

Which chipset do you recommend? I can buy Sis651, ATI RS300, and Intel
951. Intel is much more expensive. Is it possible to have a full
overscanned 720x576 or 768x576 X resolution on the tv outs? What about
the audio chip?

Thanx,

Etienne
