Yes, although I freely admit I'm stumbing around in the dark here.. I'm a
 total linux noobie.

from what I've read, using a software mixer can result in audio delays and
synchronization issues. I'm not sure if that is a problem in your case, but
you might try running without it to see what happens.

 Yep!

it looks like the Sound Blaster series does not include SPDIF (in
particular optical) output without the purchase of an optional
daughtercard? Another possibly recommended card with optical SPDIF output
appears to be the Turtle Beach Riviera. Any commentary on that card? Any
other well recommended cards with optical SPDIF output and good ALSA
support?

Thanks...

decent clue to the problem. During playback of recordings, a/v sync is
fine, however with live tv, the sync is fine when I first go in, but as
soon as I change channels, the audio lags behind the video usually by
around 1/4 sec.. but sometimes as much as 2 seconds. Exiting livetv and
entering it again will correct the problem. I'm also seeing lots of
pre-buffering pauses etc in the logs, I've tried all sorts of settings in
myth, all of which just made things worse.

are you using the alsa software mixer?

Since the mb only has 3 pci slots, I'm loath to go down the soundcard
route (being able to watch tv while recording 2 programs or record 3 at
 once is a nice feature!).

I'm going to have a separate front end, so slot availability is not going
to be an issue for me. I'm currently considering a Turtle Beach Riviera
which is supposed to have good ALSA support and has an optical SPDIF
output.

thanks for the input...

[mythtv-users] Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe audio (Realtek chipset?) software mixing HDTV SPDIF

2005-03-25 Thread Paul B. Henson

I'm considering an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard for an HD capable front
end. After some research, I'm wondering whether I should get an ancillary
PCI soundcard rather than trying to utilize the onboard sound (which
appears to be based on a Realtek chipset). The onboard sound system
includes both optical and coax SPDIF outputs (I have an Onkyo receiver the
frontend will be connected to), however reports of correct functionality
of this chipset under Linux/alsa vary. Also, the audio chipset does not
support hardware mixing and would require use of the alsa software mixing
interface.

I read that utilizing software mixing might result in audio delays and lack
of synchronization between audio/video? Does anyone have any experience
with this motherboard or similar audio chip sets and their suitability for
use in Mythtv front ends in particular HD based?

It looks like in the past the Sound Blaster live/audigy was often
recommended? Is that still a good choice for SPDIF output if the onboard
sound will be insufficient?

Thanks much...
