Just an update on this. I received my Turtle Beach Riviera card and it seems
to have fixed all my audio problems! I modified the kernel drivers, and had to
change one line in .asoundrc; from device 4 to device 2; and the problems
described above are gone!

Thanks for all those that helped. I can't say for certain that the on-board
audio hardware was the cause, but a $25 replacement is a good enough
solution for me.

Re: [mythtv-users] Audio problems - Do I need new hardware?

2005-12-14 Thread Gary Manning

I am trying to get my Turtle Beach Riviera working with both analog and digital audio going to the spdif out using ALSA.  So far I have accumulated some helpful info from this list and Google, but issues still remain.  I have mplayer somewhat working with wav and ac3 test files.  The wav test sound plays faster on the spdif than it does if sent out the analog (line out) output, I assume because of some sample rate conversion that I need to compensate for.  The ac3 test plays fine out the spdif, but also produces a 'clicking' type of noise on the line out at the same time. That is as far as I have got trying different conf file/command line variations.  Aplay usually gives me some sort of set_params error (why?), tvtime and mythtv are silent.
Below is the current version of .asoundrc I am using that I got from here: http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/DigitalSoundHowTo#head-1d37078cab3d096ff3c9a6c57c048282e81b5ec4
pcm.!default {type hwcard 0device 2}
I am guessing I still need some tweaking there for the sample rate conversion.  I definitely need some guidance on the Mythtv audio setup, as none of the examples I have found so far have worked.  My tuner card (Fusion 5 Gold) has both digital DVB and analog V4L capture devices in Mythtv, and I am confused on settings for both.

The drum-beat sound only occurs after audio playback has stopped, when
no sound is supposed to be produced. It's almost as if the audio hangs on
a sound and keeps repeating it in a loop. During playback, audio is perfect.

Considering it happens with mplayer (called from MythVideo), I'm starting
to think it has nothing to do with Myth, but rather the hardware, or maybe
even drivers (It doesn't happen in Windows, same hardware). I ordered
a Turtle Beach Riviera this morning (thanks, Dewey), and I'll post an update
if it resolves it.

Do you get the drum-beat-like sound during normal playback with low volume
material?

Chaintech AV710 $25 at newegg is another option. But it might not solve the
issue if its an electrical noise problem.

From what I can tell, most people don't experience these problems, and some have

suggested the MythMusic problems is due to cheap audio hardware.

I can recommend against a sound blaster live value, but only based on
personal experience. There may be others here who have it working
fine... But I confirmed my problem not to be motherboard compatibility
as I was able to switch out motherboards easily and still had sound
issues -er, I should mention I was using via mobos albiet different
chipsets. My onboard sound actually works perfectly, way better than
the SBlive did, so I use that. It seems people have good success with
the orginal audigy. I know that sounds crazy because it also uses the
emu10k1. Maybe the issue with the value is that it's extra crappy for
your value and the regular live maybe fine. Also, I don't know how much
of it is "cheap", because I got an old ensoniq audio pci working just
fine in linux (es1370), also better working than the live value. More
than likely you could still find both of those cards on ebay (well got
an audigy from creative directly off ebay the other day).

Turtle Beach Riviera -- 5.1 support, SPD/IF, works with Linux out of
the box, shouldn't run more than about $30.

[mythtv-users] Audio problems - Do I need new hardware?

2005-12-11 Thread James C. Dastrup
Using 0.18.1, I have two audio problems, both of which I've researched quite a

but thought I would check one last time if any solutions are available. I'm
