Right, but I am not trying to just encode mpeg4 video, I want it in myth.

: )

P.S. I notice that mpeg2 is now saved as .mpg files from my HD-3000 card,
why do my hardware mpeg4 convertx units save as .nuv? I thought all
hardware mpeg was going to be .mpg now?

Hmmm that's a good idea. This could even be scripted pretty easily.
Maybe I'll put together a script to do that, although it wouldn't be
run through the UI so wouldn't be as easy to use.

Nathan,

Since your card does the encryption for you, you could just make
sure that the backend doesn't have any scheduled shows, or shut down
the backend, then just do the 'cat video0 > file.mpg' trick that
people use when testing their card setup. So, just start the cat,
start the play, then ^C when the video stops.

It's not what you're asking about, but it seems like it would be the
simplest way to me. :)

Any plans to make it easy to import a bunch of videos this way? I guess I
am talking about another manual record option that lets you input show
info like title, actors, descriptions, etc. I know you can do this today
with above and then editing mysql, but it would be nice to have a VCR
input you could just start and stop via myth and enter all the show info.

My DirecTV input is going to the tuner of the card. That part is
working just fine. I just wasn't sure how to set it up so I could
record off my VCR. I have a bunch of tapes of when my kids were little
that I want to record off the VCR tapes and burn to DVD so they aren't
lost (VCR tapes seem to decay fairly fast). So it looks like I can
just do the setup as Mercury described. I'll give that a try.

If your DirecTV input is going into the tuner of the card, you should
be able to simply create another video source (using the composite
input and audio inputs on the back of the card) for your VCR as
Mercury has detailed in the thread.

However, if you are using multiple direct inputs (e.g. composite
and/or S-Video) it may be easier and 'cleaner' to get Hauppauge's
additional input connections backplate. This connects to your PVR card
and provides a second set of recordable inputs so you can leave
another device plugged in. You can still only record one source at a
time (the 350 has only one encoder) but you can switch between inputs
easily once they are correctly defined in input connections.

I have a PVR350, too.  In mythtv-setup, I found Composite 0 corresponded to the composite inputs on the card.

The following may be incomplete, it's from my notes of October 2004 - thirteen months ago.

In mythtv-setup, I defined a Video Source called VCR, but DID NOT try
to get any lineups for it.  Then, in Input Connections, I assigned
VCR to Composite 0.  I left the Start Channel blank there.

Then, in Channel Editor, I defined a new channel with the Channel Name
of WVCR, assigning the Video Source to VCR.  I gave it a unique
Call Sign..., something like MYVCR - don't remember now.

While watching TV on the PVR350, I just hit the "c" key to change inputs on the card and watch what's playing on the VCR.

To record from the VCR, I use manual scheduling.  It's not too
hard to play a tape on the VCR just before or after the scheduled
recording starts.

Sorry for the incompleteness, but a little experimenting should get you
closer to being able to have the VCR be "just another channel",
so-to-speak.

Good Luck!

[mythtv-users] Cannot Record VCR

2005-11-14 Thread Curtis White
I have my MythTV setup on Fedora 4. I followed the excellent
instructions by Jarod. Everything is working great. I can record and
watch shows from DirecTV without any problem. I am using a PVR350 card
and am using the TV out to my TV. I have DirecTV coming out and going
into the card (using standard cable). Then I ran composite cables from
my VCR to the composite inputs on the card. But I don't know how to
set things up to read that composite input on the card to record the
VCR.

I really don't want to have to run cable out from the VCR and have to
swap the cable in on the card back and forth between the VCR and
DirecTV. I would like to find a way to read the composite inputs on
the card so I can just switch inputs in MythTV and see the VCR. But
nothing I try seems to work. I did try setting up a composite input on
the mythtv-setup but it didn't work. I don't know what device to tell
it to use.

I've tried doing some searches through the mailing list and haven't
really come up with a good answer. Maybe I'm just not doing the right
searches. I don't know. But I would appreciate any help anyone could
give me on this.
