Sorry I have to give on this one, I don't have a FC4 box so I don't know the
filesystem layout.

In theory, you have to put the files in the directory $FIRMWARE_DIR like you
did.

In /etc/hotplug, on FC4 and probably lots of other distros, there is a
script called firmware.agen which has hardwired into it, the place the
distro looks for hotpug firmware.

In FC4, that spot is /lib/firmware

Copy the firmware files for your PVR500 or HD3000 to that folder. The
naming scheme for these files has also changed with the inclusion of dvb
dirvers in the kernel. These files now start with v4l-. The PVR
files have changed names over time too (Hah!, Since June!).
So it would not hurt if you have copies with the 'old' style names, either.

I don't think so. I use debian so it's possible that you have to look in a
different place.
I don't have FC4 box, but you can search for a script in /etc with the name
hotplug (try /etc/rc.d/initd./hotplug or an other rc* subdirectory)

On my RC4 box these are the only files/directories named hotplug:

/proc/sys/kernel/hotplug
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-x86_64/include/config/hotplug
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-x86_64/drivers/pci/hotplug
/sbin/hotplug
/etc/hotplug
/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4/kernel/drivers/pci/hotplug

I don't have it either, luckily I do have /etc/hotplug/ where
firmware.agent is located.
It should contain the line: FIRMWARE_DIR=/lib/firmware.
If your firmware is located there it should work.
A 'cold' reboot maybe necessary ;)

I upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2 without changing the firmware. You can try to
enable debugging in firmware.agent (DEBUG line) and/or hotplug.functions),
redo the hotplug proces (/etc/init.d/hotplug restart) and check the logfile

[mythtv-users] Firmware issues. Please help!

2006-01-19 Thread Stewart
Did the names/locations change between 4.1 and 4.2? my 4.1 system loads up
just fine. The 4.2
fails to load the firmware...

I checked firmware.agent and my FIRMWARE_DIR is /lib/firmware. All of the
files are there.

# grep FIRMWARE_DIR /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent
FIRMWARE_DIR=/lib/firmware
# ls -l /lib/firmware/
total 808
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262144 Jan 18 16:51 v4l-cx2341x-dec.fw
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 376836 Jan 18 16:50 v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 155648 Jan 18 16:53 v4l-cx2341x-init.mpg
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 14264 Jan 18 16:49 v4l-cx25840.fw

I get...

ivtv0: unable to open firmware v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw
ivtv0: did you put the firmware in the hotplug firmware directory?
ivtv0 warning: failed loading encoder firmware
ivtv0 warning: Error loading firmware -3!
ivtv0: Error -3 initializing firmware.
ivtv0: Error -12 on initialization

The docs only mention the differences between 4.1 and later and pre-4.1
versions.

The changelog only says "renamed v4l-cx2341x-init-mpeg.bin to
v4l-cx2341x-init.mpg"
