[mythtv-users] Frontend with no window manager?
Question for the hive mind: can you run a front-end with no window manager? I've got an Xbox frontend, and it takes bloody forever to start up Xebian (1.1.1 in my case) and then launch Myth. Doing things in Myth is sloow, especially when it needs to spawn mplayer to watch a video, etc. I'm assuming most of that slowness is releated to the lack of RAM and the copious amounts of swapping that are consequently going on. Can one run the frontend with no WM to save RAM? If so, can somebody point me to the step-by -step? I searched on gossamer, but was unable to come up with any definitive answers. Thanks. -Pete ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I'm not that familiar with Xebian, so I don't know what's possible. What I'd do is keep a window manager (the consensus seems that not have one is a bigger problem due to focus issues) and try out some lightweight WM's. I suggest ratpoison, it doesn't get any lighter than that. Josh ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Frontend with no window manager?
Search gossamer again, and you'll find that while you can run a frontend without a window manager, you'll may run into problems. People who have run without window managers have reported focus issues - windows not being properly layered, so the wrong window is out in front. So, your MPlayer window might be on top, it might not be. One thing that you could try is to compile ratpoison for the XBox - it's a very small window manager, so it shouldn't take up much in the way of resources. -- Joe --- Peter Loron [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Question for the hive mind: can you run a front-end with no window manager?
