No. It has hardware to decode mpeg1/2 video only. mpeg4 will either have
to be converted to mpeg2 or you can ask one of the guys on the mvpmc
list about how the efforts to design an on the fly transcoder is going.

The Hauupage MVP software does asimilar transcode to mpeg2 ondemand to play
non mpeg2 content.

As a result of this thread and some research I am becoming interested
in this thread.

However I have a lot of mythvideo files which are usually Xvid/mpeg-4
or similar, and I would need them to be converted to mpeg-2 to stream
them. I am looking through the vlc documentation and it seems to be
able to transcode and stream in one operation. It does say it requires
considerable horsepower to do this.

http://www.videolan.org/doc/streaming-howto/en/ch03.html

presently emerging vlc on my desktop to give it a try.

I admint to being shocked that you can't play DivX/XviD on these. I
am an Aussie looking for cheap frontends, and the lack of MPEG4 is a
big bummer.

I have to agree, the number of people that use MPEG4, and even the
fact that you can (or soon can???) legally download movies in MPEG4
format would have to force the manufacturers hand.

Hopefully, a slightly beefier MVP is on its way.

I have been using the MediaMVP for over a year and think ti's
great. The biggest missing feature (for me) is the commercial
skip. I see from the mailing list that it might be getting some
work done on adding though.

I used to have my PC in the room next to the living room feed the TV
and stereo, but the MediaMVP eliminated that need. I have my
backend in the basement and the MediaMVP sitting on top of my TV.

I second this. I've been using it for quite a while too. A better way to
skip commercials would be nice.

I also use it a lot for just playing stored videos, meaning they are not
videos in the current Recordings. I wish it had some playlist
functionality, where I could select two or more shows and play in
succession.

But, these are not complaints. I like the Media MVP a lot.

I'm thinking of getting one for mythtv and music. Can you do simple
FF/REW to skip commercials? That's good enough for me.

What's the software like for image display? I read somewhere that it
was not really usable due to not freeing the memory after displaying a
picture.

Is there any way to select music from your collection by clicking on a
picture of an album? That one feature is the only thing I want from my
music player and it's remarkably hard to find!

If any of these things are not there yet, are they feasible? I'd be
happy to contribute.

Sure does, commercial skip is being worked on I think.

Not used image viewing much, very much hit-and-miss last time I tried
it. Okay if you don't mind rebooting if it crashes.

Default music player works by selecting the file from a text-based file
browser. Latest version supports slimserver which is much better (still
text-based but works a treat.)
