Re: [mythtv-users] Microsoft Remote Keyboard

2006-01-02 Thread Justin Clacherty

Why not search the archives, find out who this was, and e-mail him/
her? Perhaps he/she did get the keyboard to work, but since he/she
didn't care about the keyboard, and only the remote, didn't deign
that tidbit worthy of being posted to the mailing list.

Thanks Kichigai, wasn't sure if it'd be ok to e-mail him directly but if
all else fails I'll give it a go.

Also, have you tried the MythTV forums? It's been my experience that
the mailing list alone is never an all-inclusive resource, and
results can best be found using the two in conjunction. Just try
tooling around on Google, you might get lucky.

Already googled to no avail but I wasn't aware of the MythTV forums so
I'll take a look there. I've also tried the Fedora Forum. If I figure
it out, I'll post here.

2006-01-02 Thread Lee

I've purchased the MS remote keyboard (and the MS remote control
unit) for use in Myth. There was a thread in October about this but
it didn't say if and how the person got the keyboard to work. There
seems to be plenty of information for getting the remote control to
work but I can't seem to find anything on the keyboard. Has anyone
got this to work? If so, how?

Trying again...

Sorry, that would be me that was planning on getting an MS MCE Keyboard...
Unfortunately I have got around to it yet, as I've been busy with
work/Christmas/etc...

I was just planning on running irrecord, adding the the output to the
existing lirc config file and the adding the extra keys to the lircrc file.

Seemed pretty straight forward... Have you tried it?

Ok. I haven't tried that, I wasn't sure if it was just some special
keyboard driver that would be required or if I'd need an lirc config
file. I'll give irrecord a go, should have some time later on in the week.

Thanks,

Not much though

First find out which MCE Remote you have - there are two - The 2004
version and the 2005 version...

http://www.ptme.ch/products.php?p=b6c39b -near the bottom of the page is the
2005 version

I have the 2004 version, and run KnoppMyth, the instructions for installing it are on the KnoppMythWiki -

Give that a bash...

[mythtv-users] Microsoft Remote Keyboard

2005-10-23 Thread Oliver Groht

Hi,

i'm dealing with the idea to buy the MS. Remote Keyboard for XP MCE.
Does anybody have some experience with this device under Linux/MythTV?
My Mythbox works very well, but i'm looking a long time for a nice
remote device with keyboard,

mouse and function keys esp. for Media Center applications.

I know this device needs a IR receiver from MS. I'm looking for lirc
support, but i think there is nothing

for this device. Only for XBOX hardware. Right, or am i wrong?

I have had the following plan for the box that will live next to my TV.
Yes, it needs a remote control, but I am so tired of remotes that don't
cover enough functions, so I was just going to get a wireless USB
keyboard (I presume like the MS one you mention, although I had a
Logitech one in mind) and use that. Sure it's big, but I guess I won't
lose it that way :-)

Anyway, no need for lirc. It's a real keyboard. The remote that came
with my DVB card works the same way. The USB IR receiver is seen by
linux as a real keyboard. So using a full keyboard, there will be no
confusion/tedium mapping key pressings to functions, just use the ones
you normally use when sitting in front of the computer. p for pause, m
for menu, arrow keys to move, type data into a field, user the enter
key, and esc etc etc

Well, you can remap ANY key to whatever function you desire (there's
even a plugin for myth to do it, and I think you can do it via the web
interface too). If you wanted special dedicated keys, rather than
choosing a letter with, or without ctrl shift alt combos, then you
might try one of those fancier keyboards that have extra keys for
multimedia and system control. Just redefine what they do (and some will
have obvious uses already anyway, such as Volume up and down, play/pause
etc) The one in front of me has all the multimedia keys, plus a bunch
of others. One section has Internet functions. I could easily reuse
them when Myth was running. Home could become 'LiveTV', Mail could
become EPG, and so on

Err, wrong The MS MCE keyboard isn't a 'real' keyboard, it that it
doesn't connect to a keyboard/USB connector directly...

Even on MCE you have to install a patch to get the keyboard to work.

The MS MCE remote uses a USB receiver, that does use LIRC. It's a great
remote with lots of buttons and works well with Myth.

The keyboard also uses the same USB receiver (so beware if you're buying
OEM), so it'd have to use LIRC too...
I'm planning on getting one at end of the month, so I'll let you know,
but there were a few messages about this a few weeks ago...

yeah, sounds great!!!
it shouldn't be no problem to use this keyboard, if there is a working
lirc configuration.
Did you have a working lircrc for the MS remote ? I haven't found
something like ms remote on lirc homepage. Only for xbox devices... and
these are different.
I have bought my remote keyboard yesterday, but unfortunately i have an
OEM IR receiver from shuttle. So i have to by an original device by ms
next week if you say thats the same device like MCE remote.
