It sounds like the frontends are not beefy enough to handle software
encoding even for recording, so LiveTV using the cards in the frontend
is probably out of the question as well.

As I'm thinking about it, another option would be to swap. Put the
PVR-250s into the frontends where hardware encoding can happen and move
the BTTV cards into the backend which may have the juice to do dual
recordings (my athlon 2000 can do it).

It sounds like the frontends are not beefy enough to handle software
encoding even for recording, so LiveTV using the cards in the frontend
is probably out of the question as well.

However, if you're willing to give up the ability to time-shift live TV,
and can live without an EPG, then you could use the frontend tuner
cards as simple frame-grabbers and watch TV using xawtv (or any other
TV viewing program, like tvtime). To do this, Myth doesn't need to
know anything about the cards, so you need to remove their
configuration with mythtv-setup. Then, all you need is to re-configure
the menu item for "Watch TV" to launch xawtv instead of using Myth;
this is done by editing the XML file for the menu. The "EXEC" command
is what you want. (Someone may tell you to use "EXECTV", but that's
only necessary if Myth is configured to use the card for recording as
well.) Of course, you may have to make some adjustments to
your .lircrc, etc.

I could be wrong on this, but I think tuner cards are a backend
function (even for Live TV), not a frontend one, so I don't think you
can do what you're proposing. If you want extra tuner cards I think
they all have to go in the backend.

Any machine can run the mythbackend process and/or the mythfrontend
process. If he runs this on his frontend, then it is also a backend.
As for his original question, there is no way to force those cards to be
reserved for LiveTV only. You can set them to be lowest priority for
recordings and make sure never to schedule more than 2 recordings at a
time and they effectively will not be used.
