I would use them if they built sarge packages, or if I rebuild the src

Well I've just compiled myth on my backend from the 0.18.1 tarball. 
After a bit of basic setup (lvm creation on my 200gb drive for video, 
custom kernel to support my dvb-t card) and a few false starts (I 
installed the lame and qt3 binary packages but not the -dev versions), 
the compile completed without errors.

 I can run myth-setup via x-forwarding to my windows machine (the 
backend is headless). Just need to get my roof aerial fixed (it died a 
few days ago) and I'll be able to confirm that all works as intended 
:-). All the dependencies are available from either the official sarge 
repository or from marillat. I really don't understand why there isn't a 
sarge package, is it just a question of time needed to produce it?

Does the mythtv user need to be a member of any specific group on 
Debian? It's not mentioned in the docs.

For initial testing I'll use knoppmyth for the frontend, is the 
0.18.2svn in the latest version compatible with a 0.18.1 backend?

i also make my own packets because i run on a via epia board (the via epia cpu 
is not compatible to the packets).

i compiled the mythfront and -backend, ivtv, X.org,

not a big problem but need a lot of time.

For others reading this thread: they are complete packages and work
well. Given that most debian users will have marillat for mplayer and
xine; and given that "it just works" then IMHO it's a damn sight easier
to apt-get myth too if you just want the 0.18.1 version.

Oh, notably goom now works in mythmusic and mythbrowser works out of the
box.

official repository or a re there some backports of mere recent versions 
as well? I like to avoid inadvertently installing an unnecessary backport.

I recently gave up on it and just got the svn. Once you have the dev packages 
it needs installed its a snap to compile. But it seems that
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sid main
is valid, at least it lists packages for me in synaptic, apparently newer than 
the csh.dijkstra.edu packages as well. I presume that you would be able to 
apt-get the packages from there.

Otherwise, I do recommend a source compile. Some of the updates might be 
worthwhile for you. I only had to modify some things on my debian system to 
point to /usr/local so it would run.

Yeah, its dead.

I run it on debian sarge with my own compile of everything that isn't in 
the normal repos. (like ffmpeg and all of that) One thing that I ended 
up doing was building my own 2.6.14 kernel package for the HD-3000 
drivers rather than trying to build them into the old kernel. (which is 
also possible)

If all your worried about is things like ivytv then I probably wouldn't 
bother with going that far. Also all of my frontends run sarge where I 
built everything by hand too

Compile from source. Everything goes to /usr/local so it's fine. All
dependencies can be found in the normal debian stable repository (you
probably want that marillat source as well), so all you need to compile is
mythtv.

run the backend on my debian server (the frontend would be on a dual 
boot windows/linux machine).

The problem is my server runs debian stable. I could countenance an 
upgrade to etch but not to sid (I can't trust sid with my email and 
filestore). Is there be a package for debian stable or etch in the 
pipeline? The webpage of the new package maintainers is down 
 and I can find no info on the list since 
the announcement a month ago of the new repository.

It's beginning to look depressingly like I would need to switch 
distributions to use mythtv :-( Any suggestions on what to do welcome.
