You're using a several months old release with old drivers.

I can state with some certainty that XvMC does not
work under Myth 0.16 with nVidia 6111 drivers. I am
not on CVS so I can't state that XvMC doesn't work
with current code, right now. But I have not heard of
anyone having success with HDTV streams using XvMC
under Myth.

Issues are: The display freezes when you try to skip
forward or back, it also freezes whenever the OSD goes
away. I have not heard of any checkins which address
these problems, but I may not have seen them go by.

There are also playback problems with 720p and 1080i
streams with slow motion, jerky motion or stuttering
in time, but there have been checkins to address these
issues and they may be fixed now.

My apologies, I was indeed repeating it from reports by others such as
Jarod Wilson. Is it now fixed or was it an incorrect report?
Sorry I didn't hear about this sooner, for I did indeed advisea few
folks there could be trouble running xvmc. This is great because
xvmc opens up a whole new raft of machines to playing videos and hdtv.

Would you stop repeating this crap? As far as I'm aware, it's not true.

480p is known as EDTV, it is not HDTV.

The CPU in the xbox certainly is incapable of doing a software decode
of HDTV, especially 1080i. The nvidia graphics chip in the xbox
could do xvmc, but my attempts (not on an xbox) do do hardware decoded
1080i on such a CPU did not succeed, so I doubt the xbox could do it
but I have not tried an xbox itself.

Myth's xvmc support still has some issues as far as being able to seek,
with various other ones reported.

So my guess would be, unless somebody pipes up, that the answer is
no, you won't get HDTV from an xbox, though you could get fine EDTV.

The xbox is cheap and quiet but high end hardware is now costing not
a lot more than it, though it's not as quiet because it needs bigger
fans.

Right now if you want HDTV your curse is you need a big enough CPU to
need a fan you can probably hear, though there are lots of people who
sell fans and cases that are pretty quiet. Even if the fan is quiet
when the CPU is idle, decoding will use most of your CPU and crank up
the heat. So does commercial elimination or transcode. I find it
amusing that, if I pass by the TV room just _after_ a show I have recorded
is on, the machine gets loud for a while. I need to move commercial skip
to a different backend.

Yep. I've got an XBox hooked up to a 37" Sharp AQUOS HD set and
displaying at 480p. My backend has a PVR-250 and records regular analog
cable at 480x480 using the standard bit rate settings. Once you get
everything running, you might want to experiment with 720x480 and higher
bitrate settings -- the default bitrate is barely adequate, though it
saves on disk space.

You will need the following to get started:

  * a modded XBox. I installed the Xecuter3 chip from Team Xecuter
(http://www.teamxecuter.com/), but if you're not handy with a
soldering iron you should either use the software mods described
at xbox-linux.org or use a solderless chip.
  * an XBox HD cable (http://www.xbox.com/en-
us/hardware/highdefinitionavpack.htm)
  * mythtv-xbox (http://bit.blkbk.com, apparently under
reconstruction at the moment following a phpBB2 hack)

Once you have MythTV installed on your XBox, follow the HDTV HOWTO:
http://www.xbox-linux.org/Xbox_HDTV_HOWTO. I've found that my XBox
doesn't have enough memory to display 720p, but it works fine at 480p.
I've also discovered that if I boot into the Microsoft BIOS and turn on
any of the HD options in the Video Settings screen, Xebian craps out
shortly after booting. This doesn't appear to affect whether it uses HD
resolutions, so I just turn on 480p setting when I want to play Halo 2
and turn it off again afterwards. If you're not using the XBox to play
hi-def games, you won't have this problem.

Make sure you turn on one of the deinterlacing options in the MythTV
setup if you're using a progressive resolution like 480p.

> does it use progressive out for dvd's,

Not sure on this one. I'll try it tonight when I get home.

> and does myth play dvd iso's, just like xbox media center does?

Sure. You can rip VOBs or transcoded movies within MythTV and play them
back using either an internal player or an external player like mplayer
or xine.

> and does it support dvd menu's from the iso files?

As Paul W. said in the previous message, xine supports menus.

Good luck!
