I also did some character mapping for my DIGN4 VFD (it's samsung I believe).
The mapping instructions I found here :
http://www.angerman.net/articles/jukebox/#lcdproc

I'm not sure if your display is a parallel mode one, but the main trick to get
it working well in my case with LCDproc was setting the correct mode in the
BIOS for the parallel port (you may have to experiment with the correct
settings).

The red and black power wires go to the bottom pins 1 and 2.

I have it working with LCDproc. It does have its problems though.

When I first got the Silversone box the VFD was very temperamental. Some
times
it would start up OK others it refused to work. One day I was changing
around the
routing of the wiring in the case and had to disconnect the plug on the back
of the
VFD. When I restarted the machine the VFD refused to work no matter what I
did.
In the end I decided to take it out of the case to get a better look at it.
When I did I
noticed that the connector pins had been very badly soldered to the PCB with
some
pins not even soldered at all. Others had clear dry joints. I carefully
resoldered the pins
and it has worked OK ever since.

It will work with the stock LCDproc source/packages but I know the version I
was
using at the time had to be patched at get the character mapping sorted out
among
other things. I forget exactly what! I still have issues with it though. It
often seems to
randomly display garbage characters. It's possible the latest LCDproc fixes
the
problems I have been having. Not had a look lately to see.

2005-02-18 Thread M S
One thing you should check is that the setting in BIOS for the
parellel port is correct. I can't remember off the top of my head,
but it has to be set to a correct setting... I can't remember if it's
EEP or ECP, but try whatever it isn't. That should solve the problem.
 Then, please post how you succesfully did it so I can see if I can
replicate :)

I have it working now. Don 't ask me what I did, because I don 't
know. Some reboots did the the trick. It seem however, after a few
days, I also get weird signs. When I reboot, it works again. Sometimes
even restarting LCDd is helpful.
In my eyes the display is somehow living its own live. I tried to rule
some things out even with help from the lcdproc-list, but no succes.

Have a nice time with it!

As far as I remember, I didn't experience that at all, but it could be
it's not quite the same display(=driver)?

Anyways, here are the uncommented parts of my LCDd.conf, which seems
to work properly:

[server]
Driver=HD44780
Bind=127.0.0.1
Port=13666
WaitTime=5
User=nobody
ServerScreen=yes
Foreground=yes
#these two above should probably be turned off for "production"
Heartbeat=open
InitialHeartbeat=on
Backlight=open
InitialBacklight=on
BacklightBrightness=255
BacklightOffBrightness=0

[HD44780]
Port=0x378
ConnectionType=winamp
Keypad=no
Backlight=no
Size=16x2
DelayBus=true
Device=/dev/lp0

Thanks Nezar, I have managed to get something up on the VFD screen now. It
appears to display some jibberish - perhaps there is some kind of problem with
the character set being displayed. Have you experienced this? There is also a
little lag with scrolling text where the screen is not correctly updated,
leaving trailing characters!? Perhaps these two problems are related!?
Many Thanks
