To identify the bottlenecks, here's a cool utility to measure and
graph the processes that run during boot:

Dont care what machine you have got or what versions of software.
Just what is the art of the possible.

You could use suspend to ram or suspend to disk for boot times on the
order of harddrive spin up times (unless its NFS mounted root, then
even faster)

2005-01-19 Thread Robert Denier
I counted 42 seconds before kde was up with me hitting enter at the grub
prompt rather than waiting. I didn't count the time to enter a username
and password either before typing startx.

Since kde loaded a lot of windows, I'd imagine I could load myth in that
time easily. I'd guess if this was a dedicated myth box you could get
down to around 30 seconds with a custom built minimal gentoo system
running on modern hardware. Of course that is a guess..

Mine is ~4 minutes right now. Waaay too long. Any good places to
look for pointers on what to turn off?

Others may find this link informative:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-boot.html?ca=dgr-lnxw04BootFaster

It describes the process of using 'make' to start the init.d scripts in
parallel based on their interdependencies (starting ntp, nfs and samba
in parallel, but only after the network interfaces have started).

Eliminating unnecessary services entirely is probably far more fruitful.
There's no need for samba startup if you're not sharing files with
Windows boxes.

In my own case, I'd have to count the 30 second delayed autologin of
mythtv, so I'd probably lose :-)

Cheers,
Les Gondor

You can always set the mythtv user to autologin with no delay when the
machine is first booted, then use a delay after that.

Last time I checked it was 60 seconds. Using autologin in inittab,
runlevel 3, ratpoison, frontend only.
