It all but eliminates the need for lirc, which in my opinion is a
good thing. No worrying about having lirc support compiled into
other packages. e.g; Mplayer, xine, zsnes, and what ever other
add-ons you might use.

Yeah, instead, you can worry about remapping the keys for MPlayer,
xine, zsnes, MythTV, and ... (Just the reason why I use LIRC with my
ATI Remote Wonder--for which there is also a kernel keyboard driver.)

I've just not had very good luck with lirc, most of the problems stem
from focus issues, who gets the key press.

So, either you didn't worry enough about having LIRC support compiled
into other packages or you just never re-configured your ~/.lircrc for
"native LIRC" support. ;)

The focus issues are /only/ possible when using irxevent. If using
"native" LIRC support (i.e. "prog = mythtv" instead of "prog =
irxevent"), focus can never an issue because LIRC transmits the "config"
string to /all/ registered clients. LIRC broadcasts the strings and
it's up to the application to determine if it should react to the
keypress or not.

Not using a window manager would cause a focus

cause the keystroke to go to the wrong window.

I haven't had any problems at all using lirc-compliant
applications (mythfrontend, xmame and xine are the
ones I use).

I was using twm and irxevent. This point is moot now though. I've been
using a learning remote and a wireless keyboard. That has worked well
for me, only problem was the few number of keys that I was able to
program into the remote. Using the ir-kbd-i2c drive I can have as many
buttons that my remote can muster and have them appear as the keypresses
I want in the input stream. Thanks for the info though.

Re: [mythtv-users] ir-kbd-i2c Driver

2005-11-08 Thread Joe Votour
I haven't tried this, but, in my opinion, lirc is in
fact a good thing.

If you only use MythTV programs, which share the same
keybindings, then lirc doesn't seem like such a big
deal. However, once you add external programs into
the mix (like xine or xmame), then the configuration
gets much more complex.

I feel it's easier to use lirc and have multiple
entries in the .lircrc file (one per application per
remote button), than it is to try to synchronize the
keybindings between multiple programs.

[mythtv-users] ir-kbd-i2c Driver

2005-11-08 Thread Calvin Harrigan
Has anyone tried using the ivtv driver and the ir-kbd-i2c driver to make
remote keypresses show as regular keyboard keypresses?
I tried it out and it works pretty good. I was curious as toif anyone
has made use of this cool driver in the 2.6 kernel.
It all but eliminates the need for lirc, which in my opinion is a good
thing. No worrying about having lirc support compiled into other
packages. e.g; Mplayer, xine, zsnes, and what ever other add-ons you
might use.
