Re: [mythtv-users] Changing channels on DCT2000 series/audio questions

2006-01-22 Thread John Brooks
Thanks for the link! I found a few things:

1.) I was, in fact, changing the channel on my cable box (serial cable
was going from my mthtv box to the Motorola STB- I just didn't see the
numbers changing). This seems to be all set.

2.) Regardless, I don't seem to be getting any cable coming into the
PVR-250. I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps the hardware is screwed,
since I only seem to get channel 4, and changing the channel, while
effective on the cable box, does not show any change in channel in
MythTV. Also, I seem to be getting nothing but white noise unless the
coax cable is jiggled out some.

Could this be an ivtv thing, not interpreting the cable signal correctly? Or is it more likely to be hardware-related?

3.) I put the .asoundrc in the mythtv home directory, and when I logged
back in to see if it worked, it froze my X session. It didn't go
through the rest of the startup, and I had to kill my X session. Is
there any way to see why this happened?

Thanks so much for your help so far, guys!

Sorry, I'm pretty useless for digital sound stuff. I can't justify spending
money on nice speakers to my wife.

I assume you mean PVR. But yes, you need to have MythTV change the channel on
the DCT2000, this requries you to use the change channel script and tell the

MythTV may not be running as the same user you got the script to work with.
Check to see what user mythbackend runs as (prbly "mythtv", possibly "root"
but from the sound of it not), and su to that user and make sure the script
works manually.

you will need the proper asoundrc for your soundchip, if its an AC'97
compatible chip your probably using the intel alsa drivers for AC'97 and can
use the asound found here:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Asoundrc_alc850
you will need to copy it as ".asoundrc" to the home folder of the user running
mythfrontend.

you must then, in Setup>General, 3 pages in, tell MythTV to use "ALSA:digital"
for Audio output device, and enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough. Make sure
Internal Volume Controls are turned off.

Ah! Yeah, stupid me. I actually watched the cable box and didn't see anything happen, so what you're saying about an inactive serial port is entirely possible. I'll have to call them up and ask about it. Thanks!

Actually I meant to look at the LED display on the DCT2000 and see what
happens.

However, you could definitely try running the channel script while watching
livetv from within mythtv.

If neither of those show a change, then it is possible that the serial port on
the DCT2000 is disabled. You can try asking your cable company to enable it,
but they might say no. Mine did, so I'm stuck with IR blasters.

Have you tried using the change channel script directly.  As in/usr/bin/channel 24
Well, so far all I've done is  done /usr/bin/channel 5from the shell while MythTV was not running. When I ran mythfrontend and watched LIVE tv, I didn't see any difference. Do you mean I should run MythTV, then try running the command from a shell outside? Sorry if I'm being thick about this. And thanks for the suggestion!

Have you tried using the change channel script directly. As in

/usr/bin/channel 24

Does that change the channel for you?
