Just to add... I think a book and a wiki have very different uses.
I'm still going to point back to the asterisk example for this one:

Asterisk wiki: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk - very nice,
fluid, and extremely help place to get information and examples for
all areas of Asterisk.

Asterisk Book: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/asterisk/index.html and
here http://www.asteriskdocs.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=11
(free) - Great overview of asterisk, good for what is asterisk,
how/why would I use it, high level overviews, and configuration
appendices. Not fluid, and not low level; however, it is fairly
detailed.

each serve their own purpose and compliment the other.

Who's Noone? (The wiki and list lack professional editing and
fact-checking, which for many people would make buying the book worth
it)

I think a well done book on Myth would sell, certainly enough to pay
for the effort. There's definitely a hobby market that would welcome a
good how-to guide based on a standard hardware set.

There's also a lot that you could use MythTV to discuss -- a look into
consumers' rights over content they have purchased, for example -- as
I understand it, it is perfectly legal (in the US) to format-shift
content that is yours, but is illegal to bypass a protection mechanism
(like with DeCSS) to do so. I think the average consumer would be
appalled if they understood the sorts of restrictions that Hollywood
wants to put in our hardware.

Besides that MythTV is a great vehicle for talking about changing TV
technology (-- how many people have you recently explained HDTV to?),
or about the future of media delivery -- IPTV, digital cable, yada,
yada, or about the OSS development model, or about a whole range of
other topics.

I'd say it's a great idea, and I look forward to getting Jarod's
autograph on it.

Steve,
It's an interesting question. My feeling is that both good up to date
online documentation and print publication make sense. A couple of ideas
on the subject though.

Firstly I think it depends very much on what style of book it is that
you're writing. If it is a reference book then you're right, print
publication for a project as early in its lifecycle as MythTV would be a
mistake. If the book were more tutorial in nature, an introduction to
the whole concept with the aim of providing relevant background to
assist people interested in building their own MythTV installation I
think it'd have a more useful life-span. Subsequent editions could
provide a stronger focus on reference as the product matures.

Secondly, In my experience people are more likely to read a print
publication cover to cover. I was a founding member of the Linux
Documentation Project and maintained a number of HOWTO documents over a
number of years and I could tell from the number of questions I received
that despite the fact that the lifecycle of HOWTO document updates was
very fast-paced, a large percentage of readers weren't reading the
online version at all, despite the print version directing them to it.
People tend to read online documentation for reference: I have a
question, I'll google for it, it turns up an online reference, I find
the answer to my question. If you want your reader to actually read
widely about a topic then I believe a print publication better serves
the purpose.

regards
Terry

with free open source tools under Linux keeps getting shorter as the
multimedia tools get easier to use and more powerful.

Rankin's book, one of O'Reilly's popular Hacks series, contains a
hundred hacks to help readers get the best multimedia experience from
their computers. Topics covered include:

-Building a MythTV digital media hub that allows you to record television,
watch videos, listen to music, and even play classic arcade games
-Editing audio, video, and images, using both command-line and GUI tools,
all of them free
-Managing your music collection by synchronizing your MP3 player and
desktop and using dynamic playlists
-Creating and burning your own DVDs and VCDs
-Streaming audio and video over the Internet
-Syncing your digital camera to your PC to organize, touch up, and display
your photographs

Linux can be a great multimedia platform, once you learn how to use it,
Rankin adds. The problem is that documentation for these tools is often
scattered, incomplete, and in some cases overly complicated. Plus there
are plenty of great tools that few people have even heard of. 'Linux
Multimedia Hacks' puts all of this information in one place written in
plain English.

Re: [mythtv-users] MythTV Book

2006-01-02 Thread Matt
just a thought, maybe it could be an o'reilly book... kinda like this
one for asterisk:

You can buy it, but you can also download it for free using the
creative commons license.

Is anyone working on a book for MythTV?

I have some previous writing experience and a contact or two that might
 help in getting something published.

Is there any interest in collaborating in creating one?

My aim would be to get something published, donating a percentage of
royalties to the project to assist with ongoing development.

 regards
 Terry
