Re: [mythtv-users] Myxer theme available

2005-05-31 Thread Sasha Z
I just downloaded myxer and mythcenter, and I must say that I'm very
impressed with myxer. I might mod it to be a little more minimalist
and to make somewhat better use of space, but the general color scheme
and patterns are remarkably perfect.

Thanks for putting this thing together. Myxer is now my living room theme. :)

The search path for files is goes ~/.mythtv > theme > default. This
allows files in your home myth directory to override themes, and
themes to override the default and the default to be used as a last
resort.

There are three different types of themes menu, osd, and ui. Myxer is
a ui theme and as such doesn't contain menus. Your MyMenus would be a
menu theme and would not contain xml files for the UI. All three are
independant of each other.

Oh, I would love to be able to edit XML files as well, I actually
started down that path (I generated patch files so I could reapply
changes after an upgrade) but I see that there are better ways now,
two were mentioned: a local copy in ~/.mythtv overrides the default,
and a subdirectory under /usr/share/mythtv/themes.

Could someone explain what the rules for these overrides are:

1) If I put a file in ~/.mythtv. what exactly is overriden? A file
with the same name under /usr/share/mythtv (which is where most menu
XML files live)? There are XML files in subdirectories of
/usr/share/mythtv as well, including themes. How do I override those,
by replicating subdirectory structure?

2) If I create subdirectory /usr/share/mythtv/themes/MyMenus, how does
Myth distinguish between themes and menu themes? I don't recall seeing
"Myxer" as a menu theme, may be I just haven't scrolled far enough
though. And, same question as above, if I have Myxer theme and MyMenus
menu theme, how does MyMenus override XML files which are not in
/usr/share/mythtv but in its subdirectories?

Thanks,

So we are clear, the original poster only did not know about the option for Menu Theme in Appearances --> Setup. There are two choices in that menu, "Default" and "Classic".  The original poster really only wanted to know how to set it to "Classic" from within Mythtv.  Editing the xml files is certainly dangerous, and probably best done within a spare copy of the theme's original folder.

Or you could do things the "right way" and simply copy the menu files
to a directory under the themes directory such as "MyMenus", make any
changes you want to make, then go into the appearances settings and
select "MyMenus" as your menu theme.

You can also copy mainmenu.xml to your ~/.mythtv dir and edit it there.  Any changes you make will be applied and it will keep you from messing up anything.

Also there is a selection in the settings part of the front end, in
the themes part, that allows you to change the menu style. look for
that and switch it to classic.

That should give you the menu style you are looking for, i think.

just my 2cents.

PS i use the theme as well under classic.

Looks very nice - I only have one issue - the highlight bar and the
space available for menu items is not "wide" enough for me. I use
Titivillus and use large text and your theme doesn't provide as much
space for menu item text.

For example, where in Titivillus, I see "Listen to the radio", in
Myxer, I can only see "Listen to the"
