Attached is a new "all" patch which fixes a bug in the previous one.
It also address the arrow positions on the "program info" page, and
keeps the text within the box.

How is this for a wacky option:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot15-wacky.jpg

With this arrangement, you can get pretty long descriptions, but still
have over 40 characters for the channel name:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot16-wacky2.jpg

Personally, I leave "Generate thumbnail preview images of recordings"
turned off. I don't like waiting the 2 seconds it takes to generate
the thumbnail, and I like the extra room on the screen for the
description:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot17-wacky3.jpg

What do you think?

No compromise necessary. We can leave as you designed it. I just
thought it "looked" better with the Channel/Flags/Date on one line.

Well in the UK we don't really have 'callsigns', so can we reach a
compromise somehow?

Could you live with 2 lines of programme description? with the
grabber I use, even 3 lines is nowhere near enough to see the full
text, so I figured two would make no difference.

Well, there's a good reason the channel name space is so wide in the

Thanks John.

I'll roll the patch into the main bundle as soon as I get the chance..
I appreciate the input.

Stuff like this would be harder to miss if we had a theme designer
app testing even the tiniest things can take ages and it's very
easy to overlook stuff without having a humongous check-list.
Excuses, excuses, I know... ;-)

The attached patch does not fix anything. It rearranges some of the
info on the "Watch Recordings" screen a a bit.

I can understand wanting a rest. One advantage of you "resting", is
that it opens the door for some of the rest of us to tweak it ;-)

Attached it a patch with fixes group_info section so it will not
overlap with the selector section, as seen here:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot2-watch-left.jpg

It also moves the date over a bit, so it does not overlap the
scissors. I also moved some of the text areas around just a bit, to
take more advantage of the screen real estate -- but not violate the
5% rule.

Thanks for your comments, but after this update (to ver 1.3) I'm going
to try to have a rest from it. There'll be no more changes for a wee
while.

IMPORTANT: I've moved the site to www.mythtvtalk.com/ProjectGrayhem/

What else has changed? Let's see

Tweaked everything to allow 5% border for overscan
Changed the buttons
Reworked lots of graphics to allow the new border to look okay
Removed some duplicated graphics (same file, different name)
Corrected some spacing issues

Would've been nicer to get everything right first time, but hey

If you want to know what might be coming next, try

Justin,

The very first (top) show listed on the "Watch Recordings" has a grey
background instead of black. All the other shows listed have a black
background. Every time I go into that screen, I catch myself
wondering what is wrong with that first show?

How hard would it be to change the background where all the shows have
a black background -- for consistency? Alternately, It would help if
the grey slowly faded out as it reached the middle of the screen,
instead of abruptly going to black right after the first show listing.
 What do you think?

Also, I know you don't want to hear "than it's too monochromatic", but
I like the font colors you picked for the "Watch Videos" screens
better than just the white used for the "Watch Recordings" screens.
In general the black/grey backgrounds are fine, but using color in the
fonts would add just a bit of spice.

I tried playing with my gui sizes last night. I got it to fit better,
but it is not pleasing to the eye. It leaves a blue-ish haze around the
background and you can see distortion at the corners, where with
overscan, all that is hidden off the screen.

True. Of course changing the font preference to 'default' aggravates
the problem with the date format "MM/DD DoW" fitting.

If you are talking about the "Graphics", I think it has to do with the
"Show group summary" setting. I have that turned on. It is under the
"Playback" menu.

For the date not fitting, I personally would rather have the date fit,
and have to actually move the cursor to the show to see the whole
title. Note that the date also does not fit in the bottom
(description) area of the screen, if the "default" font size is used.

The scissors icon also overlaps the date, a bit.

Hmmm. How many people use Myth on a monitor as apposed to a TV? I
personally think you should assume that TV viewing is the "norm", and
the theme should allow for a 5% overscan.

It is quickly turning into a very nice, polished theme. Nice work.

One of the causes for this is the button graphics not being wide
enough in some cases. Help yourself to the new buttons here:

Justin Hornsby wrote:
> I was dreading this.

We take it for granted that a TV picture fills the screen, The
illusion is that the picture size is identical to the screen
size but this is impossible. The raster size is larger than the
screen and the rough edges are cutoff by the cowl. A TV tube has
slightly curved edges and rounded corners. This is the traditional
shape of a TV screen:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/75/Television.png

Imagine ProjectGrayhem displayed on this TV, especially the icons
in the upper right corner. Modern tubes and cowls do a better job
of giving the illusion that the picture is rectangular but the
issue still exists. Another factor is that the picture can't be
perfectly centered so there needs to be enough overscan to cover
the middle of all edges and there may be more overscan on one side
than the other or top or bottom.

> On the minus side, people who have displays which don't overscan will

All several billion TVs that have ever been made since the '40s
are supposed to overscan unless they are misadjusted or broken.
TV production, broadcasters and devices designed for TV display
have all agreed to follow the SMPTE standards for several decades
so that picture elements and text will fit for all TVs. If you
look at TV graphics, VCR OSDs, the TV's own OSD, DVD menus, video
game consoles, commercial DVRs, they all follow this standard. A
common trick is to have graphic elements that flow off the screen
but if you look at the text, it all falls within the smae margins
from the edge.

> I thought that's why myth had the facility to scale the GUI.

It's ironic that myth is a TV application that wasn't designed to
be displayed on a TV =). We should have started by insisting that
the SMPTE margins were used but this hasn't been the case. The
setup wizard pages are particularly bad (but this doesn't mean that
themes and OSD themes have to be just as bad too). Myth GUI size is
actually a hack in response to the self imposed problem. The GUI
size can be tweaked and centered to try to match the edges of the
GUI to the edges of an individual screen so that GUI elements near
the edge won't be cutoff. However, if the GUI has little or no
margin space, it is difficult to impossible to match it perfectly
and there is nothing that can be done for elements in the corners
if the screen has rounded corners. None of this would be necessary
if we adhered to the action safe and title safe areas. For OSDs,
there is no GUI size adjustment (nor should there be) and we need
to be more strict about the margins. These are much easier to fix
than the GUI pages.

The problem comes from the fact that if a theme designer doesn't
think about a TV screen, they tend to think of the rectangular window
on their desktop as the space they have to work with. They should
actually see it as blacked out as least 2%-3% on all sides with
curved corners. [A related problem is that fonts chosen from two
feet in front of a monitor may not be readable on a 19" screen
from ten feet away.]

Any action, movement, or object that is supposed to be seen should
be 5% in from the edge and any text that needs to be read should be
10% in. However, 10% is probably overkill these day. Tickers like
CNN usually fall in the space between 5 and 10 percent. So, for
an 800x600 GUI design, graphics that don't flow off the edge should
fall inside 40-760 and 30-570. Something right at 40,30 or 760,570
may still be cutoff on some screens but that's the TV's problem.
You've done your part... that's why there is a standard =). Text
should be further in if possible but really, having a margin of
at least 30 or 40 solves most of the problem.

Just flipping through my settings and saw this:

Is this a 'my problem' with resolution/Font DPI, or something else?

(This is an VNC window just so I could get the screenshot and post it
easily, but it looks the same on the actual TV where this exists).

I'm running a modeline for 1280x720, at 100DPI (forced in startx).

SVN lets you adjust the GUI size, I don't know if 18.1 does though. My thought
is design the theme for no overscan and let people adjust the gui in the

I have the same problem. When I designed my theme I used the reference
pointed out to me by the mythtv users:

http://scanline.ca/overscan/

"Safe action and safe title areas

To help broadcasters know when something will be visible on a
television, SMPTE defined specific sizes of the action frame called the
safe action area and the safe title area. My reference is SMPTE
recommended practice RP 27.3-1989 on Specifications for Safe Action and
Safe Title Areas Test Pattern for Television Systems.

The safe action area is defined as the area in which "all significant
action must take place", and the safe title area is where "all the
important information must be confined to ensure visibility on the
majority of home television receivers."

The safe action area occupies the center 90% of the screen, giving a 5%
border all around. The safe title area occupies the center 80% of the
screen, giving a 10% border."

You should have a 5% border where there is nothing in that area to allow
for different tv overscans. The menus look great, but any screen with
boxes on them, as in the Watch Recordings screen, the left and right
edges of the boxes are just off the screen so the text is right at the edge.

Right...

All you folks using this theme, if you could go into ui.xml and edit
from line 1657 to read like this:

That will fix the dates being cropped. The next (a week or so away)
release will have this fix in place.

Thanks,

Screenshots!

Excellent.

A lot of those pictures depict things on my 'to-do' list. There are
obviously some screens I've not got round to widening yet.

Another thing I noticed was that the font used in the menus was
actually Tahoma and the font used in the UI was Verdana (or the other
way around). This will be straight in the next release because I'll
have switched it to the 'Vera' font (no easily discernable difference
btw).

As for the other issues like bits falling off the screen, or only half
the data being shown - I'm a little lost as to what could be causing
them. Yes, I realise there are niggles, but if I'd seen major stuff
like the 'watch recordings' arrows being cut off I would've put them
right before rolling this thing out.

I'll now tackle each part of your critique...

I think that the issues you're seeing where things are too small are
caused by me not paying attention to the 'small' font preference
during testing.

There's not much can be done about this without reworking the UI code,

I don't know what's gone wrong there. What GUI size are you using? I
can provide a screenshot where it all fits perfectly. As for the date
still being cut off... I have to make a decision... cut off long
program names or fit all the date info. Both are displayed when a
recording is highlighted, so I think I'll make the date fit instead.
Bear in mind that long show names will be truncated because of this.

This will require you to adjust the GUI size in 'appearance' setup.
Either that or I'll need to rework all the theme to take into account
5% overscan, which in turn will waste space on screens that don't
overscan.

I appreciate that. Thanks for your _excellent_ report, John.

By the way.. this d/m DOW issue will definitely be nixed in the next

In fact, thanks to all the 'testers' out there who've taken the time

Hi Justin.

Your theme has come a long way and is looking really good!

Some of the fonts seem a little off. I did make sure I had Verdana
installed. I grabbed a font package from here:

http://www.linux.com/howtos/Font-HOWTO/fonts.shtml

On the Watch/Delete screens, the fonts at the top seem fine, but the
show description font seems too small. Also, the "box" for the show
description does not allow the description to use all of the screen
real estate, and actually cuts off some letters.

Here is a screen shot which illustrates this:
http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot7-delete.jpg

On the "Upcomming" screen, the font for the show description seems
fine (unlike on the Watch Recordings screen), but the show titles at
the top seem a little too small:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot6-upcomming.jpg

On the Watch Video screen, the upper left box which holds the names of
the previous level folders seems to cutoff part of the names. This is
common to all themes, so there may not be anything you can do about
it:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot5-watch-video.jpg

Minor nit: On the show details page, the box could be wider to make
better use of screen real estate. Also, you may note that the top
line of text occasionally spills outside the box:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot4-watch-details.jpg

If the "cursor" is in the left column of the "Watch Recordings"
screen, the graphics seem to be cutoff. This screen shot also shows
that there is still not quite enough room if the Short Date is set to
"MM/DD DoW" format:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot2-watch-left.jpg

The system information box could be wider to take advantage of screen
real estate. It also does not seem to allow information to actually
fill it:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot1-information.jpg

It also cuts off some of the information that normally shows at the
top. For example, this is what minimalist-wide looks like:

http://snoopy.isa-geek.net:8044/shot1a-minimalist-information.jpg

Finally, AVIA claims that I have less than 5% overscan. Even with
that little, the Watch Recording screen barely fits -- I can only see
half of the up/down arrows.

Thanks for all the hard work. What little I have done with themes has
taught me that they are very time consuming.

my bad though, my previous numbers for resolution were a little off...

So after having the issue, I looked at (vimdiff'd) the 2 files and
they are far different. The default ui.xml is a very big file, the
new one is quite small; comparing number of lines it's like 20:1
ratio.

My guess is either that the ui.xml above is supposed to replace a
portion of the ui.xml in the default file, or it's supposed to be a
different file and was named ui.xml?

Just stabbing in the dark, I don't know themes at all.

Bad configure? But, regardless, you don't need to mess with the
installer. If you just untar it to the right place, it will work and
will not be deleted the next time you upgrade. And, if you really want
to get fancy, put the "non-standard" themes in ~/.mythtv (I think in
~/.mythtv/themes, but can't remember off hand).

After making that change I get the following error:

"Myth could not locate the selector object..."

My Screen Res and Font Size, :D I haven't quite figured it out yet to
be honest. I'm trying Modelines that supposedly give me a 1280x720,
but my screen size appearance never changes and my Xorg.0.log has:
Virtual screen size determined to be 1024 x 768

Which I assume means that is my resolution. I'm using an incorrect
DPI that I have to force in my startx script, and I can't quite pin
point where my problem exists.

None of this applies to your Theme, but figure I should point it all
out so others don't see my post and do something stupid like I have
thinking it's correct.

No worries, I wasn't suggesting to anyone to modify their DPI, I was
just pointing out what I did, figure this might help with
troubleshooting.

Right..

You've got 20 more pixels to play with in the date field...

Download the new ui.xml from here: http://www.juski.co.uk/pg-wide/ui.xml

If you still have issues, tell me what screen res & font size you're
using (I've checked it at 1280x720, at the default font size & found
it to be okay).

Justin.

Please don't suggest using the wrong DPI. Displays for mythfrontend
should be set to 100 DPI. Changing the DPI only changes the problems
(probably to ones you feel are less intrusive) but does not fix them.

I did too, but I lowered my DPI to 75 from 100 and now it works on all
3 digit dates (1/11 but not 11/11 for example). I blamed my own setup
as I've been tweaking my font recently and probably dorked something,
but since you mentioned it, I figure I should say "me too".

Otherwise, I really like this theme! It looks great on my TV with my
setup. And I use XvMC so I get the gray OSD too which matches
perfectly with this theme :D
