 Start again and show us:
  - apache config changes
  - settings you think are relevant/changed in nagios config files.

Do not assume anything. Do not think we know how you did things so
 describe them clearly from scratch.

Sysit,We had this problem (for SNMPtrap processing), which we've documented here: http://altinity.blogs.com/dotorg/2006/05/immediate_perfo.htmlThe short answer is that you need to make sure the host check command executes as quick as possible because it holds up other processing. This patch may help you, but you have to be careful: http://altinity.blogs.com/dotorg/2006/05/reducing_host_c.htmlTonOn 26 May 2006, at 03:13, SYSIT wrote:I have used nfs (on a netapp device) to submit  check result from slave server  to central server. But now another problem happed:  central server can’t  deal  with so many  passive check result. It’s about 150 check result per second submit  into  nagios.cmd.On central server , I found Nagios use more process to process check result , it’s  about  add 2 nagios process one minutes. So 4 hours later, my nagios server have  1k  nagios process, and system crashed.http://www.altinity.comT: +44 (0)870 787 9243F: +44 (0)845 280 1725Skype: tonvoon

[Nagios-users] Mysterious email notifications

2006-05-26 Thread Oliver Marshall
I have setup email notifications with Nagios, and the alerts are working
well. However, I am getting mysterious blank alerts coming through.

The emails show;

Subject: ** PROBLEM alert - My laptop/ is **

* Nagios  *

Notification Type: PROBLEM

Service:
Host: My laptop
Address: 192.168.100.241
State:

Date/Time: Thu May 25 21:21:32 BST 2006

Additional Info:

Note how the Service and State are all blank. The subject is also
strange as I don't have any "problem" alerts set to notify.

I have checked the services.cfg file for any odd entries, but there's
nothing strange there, nor in the hosts.cfg or hostgroups.cfg, and the
misccommand.cfg has only my notification settings.

Any ideas as to why this is happening ?

Olly

[Nagios-users] Fwd: How to request. Using send_nsca to report from remote host(s).

Does anyone have any kind of example of what a "services.cfg" entry
would look like that would accept a line such as:
(Wrapped for space)
[1148423498] PROCESS_SERVICE_CHECK_RESULT
 ;myhost;pointy-hair-watcher;1;BOSS WARNING - He's looking.

I can get send_nsca to send data but I can't figure out how to get the
host on the recieving end to understand it.

If I had a cron job on my remote system (myhost) that ran my own
script and produced the correctly formatted line, how do I make the
reciever (running Nagios) list it as a valid service and display the
appropriate information?

Thanks for everyone's patience.

[Nagios-users] Nagios cgi-bin error

2006-05-26 Thread atstake atstake

I am running Nagios version 2.0b4 with Apache 1.3.29 on OpenBSD 3.8.

Everytime I try to go to my http://website/nagios/cgi-bin it gives error -

Error 403
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /nagios/cgi-bin/ on this server

However, http://website/nagios/ works fine!

Apache access_log shows -

nagiosadmin [26/May/2006:19:46:33 +1000] "GET /nagios/cgi-bin/this
.txt HTTP/1.1" 403 293

Apache error_log shows -

[Fri May 26 19:46:33 2006] [error] [client 203.13.45.66] file
permissions deny server execution: /myserver/nagios/cgi-bin/this.txt

Directory permission for "/var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin" directory
looks like this -

drwxr-xr-x 2 root daemon 512 May 26 16:51 /nagios/cgi-bin/

File permissions on "/var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin" directory looks like this -

-r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 202848 Sep 4 2005 config.cgi
-rw-r--r-- 1 root daemon 4 May 26 16:49 this.txt

Note: "this.txt" is a file I created.

Here's my nagios part of httpd.conf

ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin /var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin

Options ExecCGI
AllowOverride AuthConfig
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
AuthName "Nagios Access"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin/.nagios_passwd
Require user nagiosadmin

Alias /nagios /var/www/mysite/nagios

Options -Indexes
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
Allow from
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Nagios"
AuthUserFile /var/www/mysite/nagios/.nagios_passwd
Require user nagiosadmin

I changed the permisson of the file "this.txt" to 755 & it gives
"Internal Server Error" if I want to view that file. For all the other
files (CGIs) it still gives the Permission Denied error.

my /etc/nagios directory is a symlink to /var/www/etc/nagios

I did a /usr/local/sbin/nagios -v /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg & it works
fine - shell exit code is 0.

Then I tried to start Nagios (/usr/local/sbin/nagios -d
/etc/nagios/nagios.cfg) & its shell exit code gives error -

in /var/log/messages I can see

/var/run/nagios/nagios.pid does not exist (ENOENT)
Bailing out due to errors encountered while attempting to daemonize...
(PID=12744)

I have a user called _nagios in /etc/passwd.

[Nagios-users] question about nagiosgraph

2006-05-26 Thread Guillermo Bellettini

Hi there, I’ve just installed nagiosgraph under
debian linux following the INTALL file instructions.

I see the “rrd” directory has several rrd
files but nagios is not showing the graphs.

I’ve checked the permissions and the cfg files
from nagios and everything seems to be OK….

The show.cgi file is ok and the permissions also…

When I click on the graph icon, Nagios shows the
information status instead of the graphics…

Any suggestion to fix this?

Thanks a lot

Emilio

The community string is basically a password -- if you don't know it,
you won't be able to get it without looking in the configurations of the
machines you're trying to monitor.

Many machines will default to "public." If that's not it, however,
you're going to need to ask whoever maintains the configuration of those
machines to tell you what the community string.

I belive that it is an RTFM issue but not matter how many F'n times I

I'll give it another go, thanks.

[Nagios-users] $HOSTDURATION usability

2006-05-26 Thread Kyle Tucker
Hi,
I modified my host-notify-by-email command
to include a line to indicate how long a host had
been down. When I saw it come out in this HOST UP
recovery notification as zero seconds, some quick
further reading shed light on why. I know this will
be useful for re-notification of hosts that are still
down, but I'd like a total on the recovery HOST up
mail as well. Any way to obtain this without keeping
some home-grown state table or similar mechanism? It
looks like the info might be in the status.dat, but
I don't know if I should be constantly accessing this
file.

Notification Type: RECOVERY
Host: host.foo.bar
State: UP
Host Description: The Downed Host
Address: 12.34.56.78
Info: host up - sshd and snmpd responding

Date/Time: Fri May 26 11:11:47 EDT 2006
Downtime duration: 0d 0h 0m 0s

Re: [Nagios-users] Connection Timed Out

2006-05-26 Thread Ian Marks
I ran into this issue several weeks ago. By default, NSCA runs in
"single" mode. By changing my init start up script to run NSCA in daemon
mode, connections were able to successfully establish and events started
to pass. You can test by starting nsca on the central server with the
following command, of course setting your correct paths..

/usr/local/nagios/bin/nsca -d -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/nsca.cfg

missing “accept connections from” in a conf file?

Thank you very much for your help with all of this.

I think I'm finally seeing my confusion here. Let's see if I can state
what I think is going on:

1) I have a Nagios host. It collects data, displays webpages, sends
alerts.
2) I have a remote host that I wish to have report to the Nagios host on
some system value on a regular basis.

It seems that what I'm reading assumes that:
A) The Nagios host has a full installation. (No surprise there.)
B) The remote host has *almost* a full Nagios installation but doesn't
display webpages or alerts.

Is this correct? Why do I ask? I was under the assumption (yea yea, I
know) that the remote host could use any program or script to generate
an output that conforms to the message standard (one of the included
plugins or a roll-your-own widget). It then hands this message to
"send_nsca", which is almost the only piece of Nagios that is available
on the remote host, where the message will be magically transported to
the Nagios host where, once queued with other messages in the command
pipe, will be interpreted by Nagios who then understands that the
message it got is connected to a host or service that it knows about but
doesn't control.

On the simplest level, if I run 'check_load -w# -c#' on a remote host
and send it, via send_nsca, to the Nagios host, how does the nagios host
know what to do with that message? It seems, from what I can glean from
the docs (aka TFM) that I'll tell the Nagios host that there's a service
on a host:
define service {
   host_name remote.host.fqdn
   service_descriptionload-check-on-remote.host
   check_command <- Question "a"
   active_checks_enabled 0
   passive_checks_enabled <- Question "b"
   check_period <- Question "c"
 ...
}

a) How do you tell it what the check_command is when the command is
remotely run?
b) Passive checks enabled, I assume that's '1'?
c) check_period (and other required values) What goes here? What does
Nagios need to know about a remote host's data collector?

Can you see the confusion?

Again, thank you for helping me with this.

A common mistake by nagiosgrapher is to have some spaces or tabs in
the config. Check your grapher definitions with vi. If the file is
loaded type :set list

Why didn't you put the authentication here? Using .htaccess files is a
substitute for putting authentication into the httpd.conf file. It is only
intended for cases where you can not change httpd.conf itself.

> Unfortunatly i still having problems with auth.. i can't login in noway!

Pick up the apache manual and build a test directory on your webserver and
see that you can get user authentication working on there following the
samples in the apache manual.

Once you figure it out you can translate the solution to the nagios
sections.

Untill you get the sample section working as shown on
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/auth.html there is little point in
trying anything else.

This is not a Nagios issue but an issue of you trying to understand your
apache server.

Thank you very much for your help with all of this.

the Nagios host where, once queued with other messages in the command
pipe, will be interpreted by Nagios who then understands that the
message it got is connected to a host or service that it knows about but
doesn't control.

our assumption was correct, I'd say.
It is _also_ possible to have a full nagios installation on the remote
host for different reasons (one being a more adaptive scheduling of
checks, one other the ability to check other hosts - think firewalled
systems etc.), but that's not exactly necessary.

For example, I have a gateway host that has a simple cron job checking
the number of logins once a minute and submitting that via NSCA to the
central nagios host and voilà - you've got part of a simple IDS.

On the simplest level, if I run 'check_load -w# -c#' on a remote host
and send it, via send_nsca, to the Nagios host, how does the nagios host
know what to do with that message? It seems, from what I can glean from
the docs (aka TFM) that I'll tell the Nagios host that there's a service
on a host:
define service {
   host_name remote.host.fqdn
   service_descriptionload-check-on-remote.host
   check_command <- Question "a"
   active_checks_enabled 0
   passive_checks_enabled <- Question "b"
   check_period <- Question "c"
 ...
}

a) How do you tell it what the check_command is when the command is
remotely run?

You don't. Usually, you either set up a command like check_dummy to be
run only when passive check results don't come in in time, and that
would trigger a critical state or a warning or an unknown - whatever
you'd need. In my example above, I obviously have the service go
critical as soon as there's a login. In other cases an unknown state
will be sufficient.

b) Passive checks enabled, I assume that's '1'?

Should be...

c) check_period (and other required values) What goes here? What does
Nagios need to know about a remote host's data collector?

Basically, the host name and service name your central Nagios and your
submitted result use must match. The rest depends on your needs. The
important thing is - but that's also explained in the manual - that
Nagios runs the active check, even when disabled in the service
configuration, when the passive check results become stale.

If you enable active and passive checks, AFAIK Nagios will not only
accept passive checks but also run active checks. This is most
definitely not what you want when you have a check command that riggers
an immediate critical state...

Can you see the confusion?

I can, and I can assure you that, at least for me, reading and
re-reading the corresponding manual sections thoroughly helped a lot ;-)

Again, thank you for helping me with this.

Well, I hope I could help clarify the base of your confsion a little.

Arno

It sounds like either you're not fuly configured yet, or looking in the
wrong place.

If you're clicking on the graph image in one of the status lists, and
not getting graphs, that's normal... it's sort of a clunky side-effect
of the way nagios handles info links compared to how older versions did
it.

Assuming you've set up a notes_url link for the service nagiosgraph is
graphing, what you want to click on is the "More Info" link on the top
right of the service status page.

Now, this is the same command I use for every other alert, but only the
check-host-alive check causes an email with NO source, NO state etc.

Is it just me that gets this? Does the check-host-alive command not fill
in the $servicedesc$ or the $servicestate$ ?

As you noted, servicestate is not the right thing to report in a host
check result. There is a list of all available macros in the manual, and
you'll find the corresponding $HOST...$ ones in there.

The more important question is - why are notifications generated at all?
You'd have to show us the configuration for one of the hosts in
question. Also make sure the check command works as you intend it to.
If, for example, you've got a macro in there that doesn't contain
anything useful that might easily explain why the check command fails.

[Nagios-users] Nagios cgi-bin error

2006-05-26 Thread atstake atstake

I am running Nagios version 2.0b4 with Apache 1.3.29 on OpenBSD 3.8.

Everytime I try to go to my http://website/nagios/cgi-bin it gives error -

Error 403

You don't have permission to access /nagios/cgi-bin/ on this server

However, http://website/nagios/ works fine!

Apache access_log shows -

I changed the permisson of the file "this.txt" to 755 & it gives

files (CGIs) it still gives the Permission Denied error.

my /etc/nagios directory is a symlink to /var/www/etc/nagios

I did a /usr/local/sbin/nagios -v /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg & it works

Then I tried to start Nagios (/usr/local/sbin/nagios -d

in /var/log/messages I can see

That command was obviously configured as a service notification, and will
not work correctly as a host notification command.

Look in the example configs for host-notify-by-*

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios cgi-bin error

2006-05-26 Thread frank

You do not have "Indexes" enabled for your cgi-bin directory, that's why
you can't browse it. This is a good thing.

Also, the whole point of defining a ScriptAlias directory is that the
webserver will attempt to _execute_ all the files that are called from
that location. Not just display, _execute_. Your txt file probably does
not have an interpreter line (#!/bin/bash or something similar) and it's
not a binary executable, so even tho your execute bits are set you get a
500 error.

And finally, does the "/var/run/nagios/" directory exist? If not then the
file "/var/run/nagios/nagios.pid" is not likely to be written.
If the directory does exist, is it writable by the nagios user or nagios
group?

[Nagios-users] Nagios 2.x + FreeBSD 5.x

2006-05-26 Thread Markham Breitbach
Hello,

We currently have a fairly large intallation of Nagios 1.x and I am considering
upgrading to the 2.x branch, but a while back there was a rather large warning
posted indicating that there were some serious problems with FreeBSD 5.x
threading and Nagios 2.x, but now I cannot find a mention of it anywhere.

I am a bit nervous about this, and would appreciate if someone could let me
know if this is still a problem, or if this ever really was a problem or if It
was all a terrible nightmare and I should go back on my meds... *grin*

thanks,

I have just added "Options Indexes" in httpd.conf. It still says
"Permission Denied".
The current httpd.conf looks like this

ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin /var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin

   Options ExecCGI
   Options Indexes
   AllowOverride AuthConfig
   Order allow,deny
   Allow from all
   AuthName "Nagios Access"
   AuthType Basic
   AuthUserFile /var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin/.nagios_passwd

If the directory does exist, is it writable by the nagios user or nagios
group?

Success! I have created the directory "/var/run/nagios/", chown'd to
_nagios:_nagios. And Nagiosn starts successfully. It has been
deamonized and I can see it running by doing a "ps"; shell return code
is also 0. So, nagios is up and listening.

I have solved this problem, somewhat. What I found is if I put the
cgi-bin in "/var/www/mysite/cgi-bin/" & point apache to read it,
nagios can read it fine. It asks for password and shows everything. As
soon as I point Apache to read "/var/www/mysite/nagios/cgi-bin" it
gives the permission denied error.

This is not a biggie but does anyone know what this is happening and
how can I solve it?

Try it with the -i flag:

make -i

hth

Well that did it I was able to run "make -i" then "make -i install" and
it's installed. Now it's testing time.

Thanks!

[Nagios-users] reschedule check error

2006-05-26 Thread atstake atstake

I would like to "Re-schedule the next check of this service" but when
I setup the time and click "Commit" it says I am not authorized to
commit.

I have user "nagiosadmin" required to log on to http://mysite/nagios
and "http://mysite/cgi-bin/nagios";

In /etc/nagios/cgi.cfg I have

use_authentication=1
default_user_name=nagiosadmin
authorized_for_system_information=nagiosadmin
authorized_for_configuration_information=nagiosadmin
authorized_for_system_commands=nagiosadmin
authorized_for_all_hosts=nagiosadmin
authorized_for_all_host_commands=nagiosadmin

I have a user called _nagios in /etc/passwd. And nagios.pid is owned
by this user.

I am using Nagios 2.0b4 on OpenBSD3.8.
