Your Oracle check is probably using an address from a tnsnames.ora file,
which is apparently correct. Either your DNS, or the address in your
Nagios config, is probably not, causing the other checks to fail.

 Has anyone send this error when using polling a Windows 2000
 server's SNMP for CPU load and diskspace?

That error means you're using the incorrect OID.

No, that is incorrect. Read the Nagios docs for an understanding of the

  First off, please do not REPLY to a message if you're not replying
  tothat message. Post a NEW message.

  Secondly, Nagios' design separates Hosts from Services. Nagios
  does not actively monitor hosts. Yes, it checks hosts, but it does not
  monitor them. What's the difference? Think of hosts as points or
  intersectionsalong a road, services as being houses along the side of
  these roads. Nagios only monitors houses (services). If for some
  reason it cannot reach a house, it checks to see if there is a problem in the
  road (host)preventing it from getting to the house (service), and
  reports these findings to you.

  If
  you wantNagios to work like CA's product, that can be done as well, but
  you'll lose ther ability to determine where along the roadway is the
  problem. To do this,use check_cluster for your
  check-host-alive.

Besides the previous suggestion of grepping the IP out of your configs,
you may have multiple copies of nagios running. An old one may be
running with an old config in which you had specified the IP as .29.
Make sure that you only have one master nagios daemon running (stop
nagios, kill any that remain and start nagios again).

 I'm really pleased with my nagios 1.4.1 installation so far, I have it
 monitoring loads of servers, but now I feel like expanding beyond the
 basics and am trying to schedule downtime for a couple of hosts since
 they are down and will be for some time.

 However I get the following error:

 authorized_for_all_hosts=nagiosadmin

 I restarted nagios with those settings but it still won't let me
 schedule downtime. Does anybody know why?

In the upper left status box on every page does it show you 'Logged in

[Nagios-users] not receiving the nagios notifications

2006-07-22 Thread Felipe Tocchetto
Hi All

I have a nagios 2.4 here, I already insert some hosts to it monitor.
But when a host goes down, the nagios system do not send me the
notifications by email.

I think all my confs files are just ok. I donĀ“t have a clue for what
is happening.

Here is the way I configured it:

The hosts.cfg file:

define host{
   host_name   teste.xxx..br
   alias   Test Machine
   address 200.xxx.xx.xx
   check_command   check-host-alive
   max_check_attempts  2
   checks_enabled  1
   active_checks_enabled   1
   passive_checks_enabled  1
   check_interval  1
   process_perf_data   0
   retain_status_information   1
   retain_nonstatus_information1
   notification_interval   15
   contact_groups  suporte-local
   notification_period 24x7
   notification_optionsd,u,r
   notifications_enabled   1
   stalking_optionso,d,u
   }

Ok, notifications_enabled   1

So the contat group that it had to send the emails:

cat contactgroups.cfg
define contactgroup{
   contactgroup_name   suporte-local
   alias   suporte
   members felipe
   }

In this case, just me, Felipe, so I put my email in the contacts.cfg file

define contact{
   contact_namefelipe
   alias   Felipe Tocchetto
   host_notification_period24x7
   service_notification_period 24x7
   host_notification_options   d,u,r,n
   service_notification_optionsw,u,c,r,n
   host_notification_commands  host-notify-by-email
   service_notification_commands   notify-by-email
   email   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   }

The host-notify-by-email e notify-by-email commands, in miscconmands.cfg:

# 'host-notify-by-email' command definition
define command{
   command_namehost-notify-by-email
   command_line/usr/bin/printf %b * Nagios

When I type mannualy the commands, a receive the email from the nagios

Does any body know what is happening?

Host checks are a check that verifies the host is up. It's generally defined as a ping check. Service checks check services like disk, cpu, swap, etc. are running on the host. By default, Nagios checks a service and if it is in alarm, it runs the host check. If the host check fails, Nagios sends host notification and doesn't send service notification. If the host is up, it sends the service notification. Nagios, only runs the host checks if the service fails. So if the disk is bad, it's set critical, but the host check ping still works so
 the host is not set down. This is intentional because if the disk fails, and the host check fails, disk notifications are suppressed as well as the other services being checked, and you get one alarm that the host is down and not one alarm each for each service. Feature Nagios doesn't have propagation like Unicenter. It has a host check so it can suppress alarm storms. Hope this helps. And i set the threshold for my disk space.. and the disk space exceeds my critical threshold; therefore, the status for my Disk Space Watcher is Red (Critical)... According to what i see right now.. the status for the whole server is GREEN.. I am not sure it is supposed to be green? Isn't it supposed to be RED because of the propagation from a child level? [Nagios-users] Need documention for hosts configuration

2006-07-22 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

i'm glad to getting nagios 2.5 working with nrpe too. Now i'am writing a
 howto on a german wiki.
My problem is, that the documention from nagios (html 2.x on the
website) is poorly written, meaning it has a bad structure and i need
much time to find, what i searching for.

So, to let me and my readers understand, what for options are possible
in the hosts config, like in the minimal.cfg i want to write it down,
on examples. Most things are selfexplained but, some not. Can somebody
write a few lines, about the following lines, or show me the right part
from the offi. docu. on the nagios website?

max_check_attempts  10
notification_interval   120
notification_optionsd,r

is_volatile 0
normal_check_interval   5
retry_check_interval1
contact_groups  admins
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
notification_interval   960
check_command   check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60%

on these last line, i don't know, where i have o set a ! for example
from the dns_check:

./check_dns -H heise.de -s 192.168.1.1
DNS OK: 0.018 seconds response time. heise.de returns
193.99.144.80|time=0.017630s;;;0.00

so looks the line from the bash, but i wrote something as command and
expecting, that it is wrong:

define command{
command_name check-resolv-dns
command_line$USER1$/check_dns -H www.heise.de -s $HOSTADDRESS$
}

define service{
use generic-service ; Name
of service template to use
host_name   win2k3
service_description DNS_resolv
is_volatile 0
check_period24x7
max_check_attempts  3
normal_check_interval   2
retry_check_interval1
contact_groups  admins
notification_interval   240
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
check_command   check_dns!heise.de
}

i know, i have had it hardcoded, but check_dns resolv the address from
the yahoo server, not heise.de ...

So, if somebody can explain my mistakes, i can writing a good howto :-)

See the ACCESS CONTROL section of the snmptrapd.conf man page. To
disable access control checks and accept all incoming traps, add this to
your snmptrapd.conf:

disableAuthorization yes

   How do you know which one has a problem like Running out of disk space or
 exchange process has just stopped? If you can propagate, when the exchange
 process stopped, it goes to critical status.. this child service will

 that node to see what's going on?

Just suppose you want to keep an eye out for trouble. Then you want to
have the TAC screen on the main board.

That screen will show you very well if any issue arises.

 I have a nagios 2.4 here, I already insert some hosts to it monitor.

And just what DO you see happening in the ligs?

Keep in mind that nagios is not intended as host monitor but service
monitor. If you want a check on host make it a pseudo service on the host.
Like the PING example you have seen.

More details can be found in the many posts in the archives on this list
regarding this matter.

Could this bbe more of a language issue? I would say the section on

clear on the options.
