Re: [Nagios-users] check_ping: %s: Warning threshold must be integer or percentage!

2006-09-01 Thread Ranjeet Kumar

Thanks a lot Andy.

It was syntax problem. I did changed to the below one & it’s
working now.

command[check_ping]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_ping
-H localhost

$ARG1$c $ARG2$ -p 5

Can you please give me idea, how to integrated Nagios with MRTG?

Ranjeet

Ranjeet,

Only just got this e-mail
after I'd replied!

OK this is what's happening.
Firstly, check_ping on your Nagios machine

is ignored by nrpe - as that
contains it's own command definitions. So,

here:

command[check_ping]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_ping
-H $ARG1$ -w

$ARG2$ -c $AGR3$ -p 5

it's expecting the hostname
as argument 1, the warning threshold as

argument 2 and the critical
threshold as argument 3. (depending on what

your check_nrpe command
reads (something like "check_nrpe -H

$HOSTADDRESS$ -p 5666 -c
$ARG1$"), what Nagios is actually passing is:

"check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60%",
so your client machine is reading the

host (argument 1) as
100.0,20%, the warning threshold (argument 2) as

500.0,60% and the critical
threshold as blank.

Also notice your typo in command[check_ping]:
$AGR3$ should be $ARG3$

Andy.

Unfortunately no. The nagios check command refused to work after many
suggestions. I have read all the Nagios docs at least twice and would
like to think I have a reasonable understanding of the whole thing but
after confirming that I had indeed done it the way all the users on the
mailing-list thought correct as well as a forum admin for the nagios
forums, I came to the conclusion that it may not be my
nagios_check_command that is at fault.

I've disabled the check_command and it no longer gives me the warning in
the web interface. In fact since doing that I can actually apply host
commands via the interface. Nice.

On a related note, this stopped me from entering comments in the
interface even when everything seemed to be correctly set up regarding
the cgi auth. Still can't schedule downtime, possibly because the check
isn't running but that's another story for another thread...

[Nagios-users] Trouble with passive checks and freshness

2006-09-01 Thread Christopher Odenbach

Hi,

we have the following setup:

Nagios 2.5
73 hosts
335 active checks
765 passive checks

Each host submits its passive check results every 5 minutes into the
nagios command file. The freshness threshold is set to 2000 seconds,
so the service stays passive, when everything runs as it should.
The check_command is defined as check_dummy, which generates the
message "No data from host" when executed actively.

This works fine for nearly every host. But there is one host, which
is not different from the others, that makes trouble. The data is
coming in every 5 minutes, but Nagios keeps flipping between active
and passive mode:

I rotate logs daily, they're between 3M and 5M in size and have no
problems viewing them in either browser. It takes only about 2 minutes
for IE to fully render the pages. IE 6.0.3790.1830. The OP's problem has
the feel of a permissions issue to me.

Re: [Nagios-users] SMART hard-disk monitoring

2006-09-01 Thread Andre Bergei
> Has anyone got a check plugin working for monitoring SMART hard disk

Just another idea here:

If you got smarttools installed, and net snmpd running you can use "extended"
net snmp checks.

In your snmpd.conf add something like this: (change your device settings of
course)

sh SMART_health_disk0 /usr/sbin/smartctl -H -d cciss,0 /dev/cciss/c0d0 |grep
Health

sh SMART_drive_temp_disk0 /usr/sbin/smartctl -A -d cciss,0 /dev/cciss/c0d0 |
egrep 'Current' | sed 's/^.*:[^0-9]//' | sed 's/[^0-9]*$//'

Uh, you might want to refine those sed statements to something more efficient.

When you this up and running, just use check_snmp to get you values.

A few possibilities:

1. Your cgi.cfg file is configured to bypass the usual access
restrictions
2, The user you are logged in with is a contact for those hosts, or
services on them.
3. Authentication is not set up correctly

[Nagios-users] check_http, not default

2006-09-01 Thread Richard Galvez
Hello, for a particular machine, I would like to check_http not for the
default host name, but a website on that machine. How can I alter the
check_http command so not check the default?

Perhaps some individual configuration that crept into your system? I'd
recommend to check the objects.cache file and see if this host is
actually set up identical to the others.

Hope this helps,

check_http --help

-H, --hostname=ADDRESS
Host name argument for servers using host headers (virtual host)
Append a port to include it in the header (eg: example.com:5000)

define command {
command_name   check_http
command_line   $USER1$/check_http -H
mysite.domain.com -I $HOSTADDRESS$ -wt 20 -ct 30 -to 35
}

[Nagios-users] Recovery while problem is aknowledged

2006-09-01 Thread Ugo Bellavance
Hi,

Situation:

- Service is in hard warning or critical state
- nagios sends notifications
- I know the cause of the problem and I know it is normal
- I go in the web interface and acknowledge the problem to cease
notifications

What happens when the service comes back into a hard OK state? Do I get
a notification?

Ugo

[Nagios-users] [Fwd: Syncing configs between 2 nagios servers - permissions]

2006-09-01 Thread Ugo Bellavance
  Hi,

I have 2 nagios servers that will be setup as redundant, if nagios1 is
down, nagios2 will enable its checks + alert. Using NSCA, I can sync
the state, but I now have a problem to sync the config and plugin directory.

The easiest way to sync would be to have all the files in /etc/nagios/
and /usr/lib(64)/nagils/plugins/ owned by the user who does the sync.
Could I do a chown nagios:nagios on all those files?

If someone has a better idea, I welcome it!

Regards,

Ugo

2006-09-01 Thread Malcolm Frazier
Your idea sounds good to me, just chown -R nagios:nagios
and setup and setup a crontab job to rsync the files to the fail-over
nagios server.
If you want a script written to do this just let me know and I will be
more than happy to help, I actually think its a really good idea.

[Nagios-users] check_snmp_int.pl

2006-09-01 Thread Mike Koponick
Title: check_snmp_int.pl

Does anyone have a SNMP Version 2, version of check_snmp_int.pl?

I have two devices on my network that require SNMP Version 2 only, it would be MUCH easier to update that file and the service check for the two devices.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

I do that on a few machines. The only potential snag (one that I have
to deal with) is if you have Nagios boxes running different OS versions,
in which case synching your plugins can be a bad idea.

Configs aren't a problem in any case, as long as you make sure they're
readable when they arrive.

[Nagios-users] Service dependencies patch for self referring and 1:1 joins

2006-09-01 Thread John P. Rouillard
Hello all:

One of the things I have wanted to do is to create servicedependencies
like:

define servicedependency{
dependent_host_name a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i
dependent_service_description sa, sb, sc, sd, se, sf, sg, sh, si, sj
host_name SELF
service_description SshCheck
notification_failure_criteria c,w
}

that will be interpreted as though I had specified:

define servicedependency{
dependent_host_name a
dependent_service_description sa, sb, sc, sd, se, sf, sg, sh, si, sj
host_name a
service_description SshCheck
notification_failure_criteria c,w
}

define servicedependency{
dependent_host_name b
dependent_service_description sa, sb, sc, sd, se, sf, sg, sh, si, sj
host_name b
service_description SshCheck
notification_failure_criteria c,w
}

define servicedependency{
dependent_host_name c
dependent_service_description sa, sb, sc, sd, se, sf, sg, sh, si, sj
host_name c
service_description SshCheck
notification_failure_criteria c,w
}

...
define servicedependency{
dependent_host_name i
dependent_service_description sa, sb, sc, sd, se, sf, sg, sh, si, sj
host_name i
service_description SshCheck
notification_failure_criteria c,w
}

I found this email:

  http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.network.nagios.user/19511/focus=19511

that points to this patch:

  http://www.xney.com/nagios/nagios-2.0-servicedep.patch

that claims to do exactly what I want and may also work similarly
with:

  define servicedependency{
  dependent_servicegroup_name check_by_ssh
  host_name SELF
  service_description SshCheck
  notification_failure_criteria c,w
  }

Does anybody use this patch? It seems to greatly simplify a very
common case where you have multiple services dependent on another
service running on the SAME host.

Does anybody know if this feature is planned for nagios 3.0?

Patrick, I assume you must have your two nagios server co-located at
the same site and connected to the same switches. Otherwise do you
have a method for rewriting your configs to change the parent
directives to match the view from your backup/remote nagios machine.

Also if you have local commands that are run on the nagios server
rather than remote probes (such as nrpe or check_by_ssh), how do you
define these entries in your services file? E.G. I have a stanza

  define service{
service_description DiskRootCheck
hostgroup_name  standard_linux_services,!standard_linux_services
-dev
host_name   !nag1
use generic-service
check_command   check_by_ssh!check_disk!-w 10% -c 5% -p /
servicegroups   check_by_ssh
normal_check_interval   2
}
  define service{
service_description DiskRootCheck
hostgroup_name  standard_linux_services-dev
use generic-service
check_command   check_by_ssh!check_disk!-w 10% -c 5% -p /
servicegroups   check_by_ssh
contact_groups  renesys-admins-nopage
normal_check_interval   2
}
  define service{
service_description DiskRootCheck
host_name   nag1
use generic-service
check_command   check_local_disk!10%!5%!-p /
}

I need to change all the "nag1" (which is the primary nagios server)
host names to "nag2" which is the backup server (located 1500 miles
from the primary server). How are yours set up so that you don't have
to change the config files and still cross monitor the machines?

What I will do for that is to put all the commands that are 'local' to
the server in a folder called 'localized', ignored by rsync during the sync.

It depends on when you want the escalation to take place. For example:

define serviceescalation{
host_name   webserver
service_description HTTP
first_notification  2
last_notification   0
notification_interval   30
contact_groups  yourcontact
}

Would first notify according the notification of the service. On the
second notification this escalation will take over and send it forever
to the contact group defined. Setting last notification to 0 means it
will continue to use this object configuration. You can do neat things
like make the first one go to e-mail, make the second to fourth attempts
go to pagers and so on.

Check out the docs to get more details.

I have not attempted two duplicate master servers in different locations
-- too many complications there. I have dual master servers in one
location, and slave machines in other locations that can monitor
independently, and have their own web interfaces enabled.

Under normal circumstances, the masters do all the alerting, and that's
where people use the web interface (since those boxes are the place
where you can see everything in one place). However, in the case of a
failure of one of those masters, the slaves turn notifications on and
begin notifying independently.

Nearly all of my checks are designed to be performed from the slave
servers and submitted via on ocsp command to the masters, so they
continue working if the masters die. Each of the slaves monitors each
of the masters, so they all have their own independent view of whether
their attached to the Nagios "cluster" or not. Parent/Child
relationships are set up based on how they are viewed from the slave
boxes doing the monitoring.

All of my checks are set up with templates (e.g., "slave1-service,
slave2-service, etc." that may or may not be defined differently on
different hosts. In your case. I might define "host_name" as nag1 in a
slave1-service, and nag2 in a slave2-service.
