 Thank you for your reply!

 So that means that there is no way I can have historical data older
than a
 month in the archives?

Yes, sure you can. You just need to find what's removing the files and
disable it. Nagios fully supports historical data up to two years old if
you keep the files that long.

[Nagios-users] No notification when host down

2007-02-27 Thread paolo . riccadonna

Hello all.

We have Nagios 1.3 installed on Debian 3.1
Last night it has notified an “Host Down error” for more than two hours but it did not send some email notification (the timeperiod of notification is 24x7). It’s the first time that we have this anomalous.

Has Anyone experienced this problem before? Could be a refresh problem? Does a plugin exist that corrects it?

Thanks a lot for your attention.

[Nagios-users] Uptime error

2007-02-27 Thread sujith h

Hi ,

Am using nagios for past 5 months. I have to monitor both the host and its
services of my client.
I had found that when i added a small plugin to monitor the host its not
giving me the proper
result. I wrote a 3 line code in a file called check_uptime:
#!/bin/bash
uptime
exit(0)

Now when I start the nagios it will work fine. But after some one or 2 days
it will start to give me
wrong output. The remaining plugins run fine.. So can anyone suggest what is
the problem???
When I check the nagios for the configurations and all it gives me no error
and warning.

Last time I had to deal with that issue I wrote my own plugin in Perl.
The device in question was a NAS appliance that had a web based
administrative interface (no log files.. no command line.. nothing.)

Using LWP::UserAgent I would screen scrape the HTML output looking for
RAID status changes using an administrative host as a proxy to
Netsaint. (I'd use the same technique on Nagios.)

For Veritas LVM I'd probably use the same technique except that LVM has
command line stuff that I can access and process the output from command
line for status.

I couldn't lay my hands on my LVM plugin right away, but here is an
example of what I used for Sun's ODS RAID software:

- -- 8 snip 8 ---

#!/usr/local/bin/perl

use strict;

$ENV{PATH} = /usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/opt/SUNWmd/sbin;
my ($md, @errors, @warnings);

if (open(CMD, metadb 21 |)) {
  while (my $line = CMD) {
if ($line =~ m/^\s*(.*\S)\s+\d+\s+\d+\s+(\S+)\s*$/) {
  my ($flags, $dev) = ($1, $2);
  next if ($dev eq $md);
  $flags =~ s/\s*//g;
  foreach my $x ( ampcluo =~ m/./g )
{ $flags =~ s/$x// }
  next unless ($flags);
  push @errors, metadb: $dev: $flags\n;
  $md = $dev;
}
  }
  close CMD;

  if (open(CMD, metastat 21 |)) {
while (my $line = CMD) {
  last if ($line =~ m/^metastat: .*: there are no existing
databases\s+$/);
  if ($line =~ m/^(\S+): /)
{ $md = $1; next }
  if ($line =~ m/^\s+State:\s*(.*\S)\s+$/) {
push @errors, $md: $1\n
  unless ($1 =~ m/^(Okay|Resyncing)$/);
  }
}
close CMD;
  }
}

if (open(CMD, vxprint -hrtq 21 |)) {
  while (my $line = CMD) {
next if ($line =~ m/^\s*$/);
next if ($line =~ m/IPC failure: Configuration daemon is not
accessible/);
next if ($line =~ m/\s+ENABLED\s+ACTIVE\s+/);
next if ($line =~ m/\s+ENA\s+$/);
next if ($line =~ m/^(Disk|dg|dm)\s/);
push @errors, $line;
  }
  close CMD;
}

print @errors;
print @warnings;
exit 2 if (@errors);
exit 1 if (@warnings);
exit 0;

-  8 snip! 8 ---

RTFG? nagios check raid returns quite a few valid results.

Googleing for 'nagios check something' is great for answering Can I

If you want any of these then let me know, I'd be happy to share.

In fact, I think I am going to post these on Nagios Exchange...

Re: [Nagios-users] notification for RAID state change.

2007-02-27 Thread Hari Sekhon

I have just posted my 3 raid plugins on NagiosExchange.org

All 3 work on both 32-bit and 64-bit Linux systems.

Here are the direct links:

3Ware
http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Check_Plugins.21.0.html?tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=878

LSI MegaRaid
http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Check_Plugins.21.0.html?tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=879

Linux Software Raid (MD Raid)
http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Check_Plugins.21.0.html?tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=880

Hope you find them useful.

Feel free to rate them and provide feedback to me.
I find the work very nicely and have them running on 2 dozen production
servers but I'd be interested to know anyone else's experience of them
and am willing to recode them if necessary.

I recently wrote 3 for myself in python. They work well.

I have the following:

3ware raid (works for 8xxx,9xxx series controllers for me)
LSI MegaRaid (works on 320-xx controllers for me)
Linux MD Software Raid

If you want any of these then let me know, I'd be happy to share.

In fact, I think I am going to post these on Nagios Exchange...

[Nagios-users] Problem with check_http and a Cisco CSS 11501

2007-02-27 Thread Scott Frazer
I'm having issues with check_http checking a hostname that's actually a
virtual ip address of a Cisco CSS 11501. The check will succeed initially,
but eventually begin to fail, taking longer and longer to return, or
eventually timeout.

If I extend the timeout to a very high amount, the process usually returns a
200 message, but it can delay well over a minute to do so.

I've compiled Nagios 2.7 and the plugins version 1.4.6 on an Ubuntu 6.10
LAMP server without errors, and the interfaces all seem to work fine. I've
got the system monitoring websites on both IIS and Apache servers (bypassing
the CSS) without any problems.

I've tried doing the install on two separate servers (one virtual, one
physical) and even tried going back to a previous version of the plugins.
My next step will probably be trying the install on a Fedora Core server and
seeing if that changes anything. Is anyone else monitoring virtual IP
addresses on a Cisco load balancer? Can anyone give me advice on where to
look next?

Thanks,
Scott

2007-02-27 Thread Patrick Proy
Hi,

Depending on the check_http options, you can mess up the CSS in his session
persistance (by not returning the ARPT cookie for example). You can also
have ARP problems.

- Do you have the same problem using command line ? Doing a telnet on port
80 ?
- What are the services/content states on the CSS ?
- Do you have the correct MAC adress of the vitual IP ?

I suggest you setup a packet capture and trace the specific sessions. It
should tell you exactly if the CSS is just becoming darn slow with replies
or it has to do something with your server.

I would not waste anytime on building a new server untill you know what is
going on based on the packet capture.

Depending on the exact CSS settings this may just be a CSS noting a DoS
condition.

Perhaps I need to fire up my old CSS and see what happens. (I actually
still have an ArrowPoint CSS ;-)

Hi Sujith,

I this may seems obvious, but just to be sure, are you running
check_uptime trough NRPE, check_by_ssh, or any other way to run checks
on remote hosts?

If you define a check in Nagios it will run locally. If the check has to
run from a remote machine you have to run a special local check that
will run the command on the remote host and return the result to Nagios.

Another way to check uptime is by using check_snmp (you need a snmp
daemon configured on the remote host). A command like this one will give
you the same result without the need to run a command on the remote host
(assuming $USER1$ is the path to Nagios-plugins and that the read
community is 'public'):

$USER1$/check_snmp -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -C public -o sysUpTime.0

You can also set thresholds (check_snmp --help for full usage text) so
that you can page on hosts that recently rebooted.

You can check many things trough SNMP, but for most advanced things you
may need specific MIBs and SNMP agents. To see what's readily available run:

snmpwalk -c public -m ALL host .1

it's a problem with the way the CSS is responding to the test. I'll have to

[Nagios-users] Acknowlegement is not stopping notifications

2007-02-27 Thread Andrew

Since upgrading from 2.0 to 2.7 nagios has continued to notify us of events
even when the event has been acknowleged and when notification has been

 My desktop machine here which I turned on this morning shows this:

 What precisely does uptime tell you when you login as nagios and run
 it by hand, and what precisely does Nagios report in the output? Is
 the output you refer to in Nagios in the Duration or Status
 information column? The plugin output should be in the Status
 information column. The duration column is Nagios telling you how
 long the host or service has been in that state for.

Are you running this command as both a host check and a service check?
If so, that's why you're seeing different output. The host check will
only run if a service on it goes to a non-OK state, and probably hasn't
run for a few days, when the host had only been up for two minutes.

It looks like you've defined the same plugin for two checks. If that's
the case, they are never going to match.
