Plenty of fixes have been added after this version of Nagios. And Red Hat
9.0 is something like a Ford model T by now. Frankly I have always had
some reservations against Red Hat 9.0 and I have run most Red Hat and
Fedora Core versions. But I tend to stick to Centos for now.

Check out the changelog on
http://www.nagios.org/development/changelog.php#2x_branch

There are plenty of lines to merit an upgrade to version 2.9 before you
start to debug v2.2 for known and fixed bugs.

Is there a similar working stand-alone alternative? Basically I am looking
for a mix of ntray which runs native and this firefox plugin because it
beats ntray hands down in the way you can only let it act on new issues
and let it ignore acknowledged systems/services.

The way Ubuntu works (which is a little different from other versions
of Unix/Linux) is that you don't have a root account. If you want to
do anything as root in a terminal session, you need to use the 'sudo'
command.

One site useful for getting started with Ubuntu is

It's been about 24 hours since I implemented this dependency mapping on
one of my more heavily used FreeBSD 6.2/Nagios 2.9 servers. I have not
had any problems with child processes and my load average actually
dropped from around 7.5 to 4.

I'll give it a week or two before I declare it a complete success, but
it has been great so far!

FWIW, I have a fairly large passive-only install with just over 4000
passive checks every 5 minutes. I haven't experienced this problem. It's
a pretty simple, standard install but one difference is I don't perform
any host checks. Perhaps you have host checks that are not optimized or
completing in a timely manner and are holding up processing of other
tasks. Nagios will stop all other processing during host checks until
they complete.

Re: [Nagios-users] FW: Problems with distributed setup, master overload?

2007-06-20 Thread Tyler Lund
Hi Jeffrey

I encountered the exact same issue. I've managed to bring it under control with
two things, but have not yet found a solution. It seems nagios just stops
reading the command pipe every once in a while and will resume after a few
minutes.

I implemented batching of service check results with OCPD:

http://www.nagioscommunity.org/wiki/index.php/OCP_Daemon

This has cut down on the number of NSCA children that spawn, and avoiding the
fork bomb that used to happen before nagios would start reading the command
pipe again. Usually nagios will recover on it's own before it becomes a
problem.

In the event I need to recover it manually, simply emptying the command pipe
does the trick. All the stalled NSCA processes dump their data and exit. (I
just cat nagios.cmd) This is not ideal, as all the pending check results are
lost in the process.

Has anyone arrived at a permanent solution?

Thanks!

Re: [Nagios-users] OK prompt in Solaris

2007-06-20 Thread kyle . odonnell
I use nrpe and snmp to monitor various services on our sun servers.
Each service using either is dependent on the 'nrpe' or 'snmp'
service. If either of these services go down our ops team
investigates. If a box drops to the 'ok' prompt, these services will
not be running.

This isn't directly monitoring for a machine at the 'ok' prompt, but
if you send your syslog messages to a centralized host, and monitor
for strings, the combination should make debugging the problem easier.

Alternatively, if you have some kind of portmaster or lantronix device
used to remotly connect to serial console, you could write a plugin to
check through serial.

I have some time constraints on a problem, and I am

Any help?

to check the event.log to check of errors.

If you are using the Firefox browser, I can recommend the
nagioschecker firefox extension which was mentioned here recently. It
permits you to filter in various ways what states will be displayed

Hi,

I have come to know that there is a situation in Solaris machines

Can you tell me the best check to deploy in such a situation? I decided

What could be another alternative in such a scenario?

Kindly help.

Thanks in advance :-)

Hi,

I have come to know that there is a situation in Solaris machines called
"Ok Prompt" where the machine can be pinged but not accessed as it is
hung.

Can you tell me the best check to deploy in such a situation? I decided
to use check_ssh but unfortunately solaris 8 servers do not have ssh
installed by default.

What could be another alternative in such a scenario?

Kindly help.

Thanks in advance :-)

With Regards,

Lalita

Subject: [Nagios-users] Generate reports for customers

  Hi,

I'm using nagios to monitor my customers.
Now I would like to generate reports for each customers and for each service
on there hosts.

I see that I can do something with "trends" but that would put a label
"Report Produced By: Nagios" on the image, or is there something so I can
remove that?
What are you guys using for this kind of reporting? and what are the options?
I see that on nagiosexchange there are some tools availible but I don't want
to test them all out.

  chiel

[Nagios-users] Alerting on a Percentage of Threshold of a group being down

2007-06-20 Thread Nick
Hi,

Was wondering if there is a way with nagios to report on a percentage or
below a threshold of group being unavailable?

For example if i have a 100 web servers but i only want to know if more
than 30% of them are unreachable or if more than 30 of them are unreachable.

Re: [Nagios-users] check_oracle requirements?

There are various threads about this:

http://www.mail-archive.com/nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg11658.
html
http://www.mail-archive.com/nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg05446.
html

Basically you need the Oracle client installed for full functionality or
InstantClient to use a restricted (but still useful) set of checks. Make
sure ORACLE_HOME is set, preferably in a script rather than relying on
an
environment variable, and you should be good to go.

[Nagios-users] Soft critical state and sound alarms

2007-06-20 Thread S-linuxale
Hi Dear,
I've a question on how avoid that my Nagios System avoid to play the
sound when it is on an attempt 1/4 or 2/4.

What I like would be that Nagios play the sound only when definitively
the process was down ( after 4/4 ).

And Eventually is possible to avoid that a soft state give me a CRITICAL
on web interface?

Thanks Regards
Alex
