You can just replace the standard check_nt.c source file with the new
one which comes with nc_net before (re)compiling the standard plugins
in the usual way.

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring service for every machine in hostgroup EXCEPT ONE

2007-07-23 Thread August Simonelli

hey kelly ...

i've just done the following in the service entry:

define service{

   host_name !not_this_one_server
   service_description the_service

etc etc ...

being able to negate hosts seems to work fine in version 2.x (not sure about

Two ugly ways I don't like:

Try running your perfdata processing command (probably something
involving insert.pl) manually, as the nagios user -- that may give you
some helpful error messages.

Have you read the docs that come with it? You may want to go over them

The short answer is that you need to edit your map file.

[Nagios-users] Nagiograph issues

2007-07-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,

I've been trying to get nagiosgraph up and running. I've fixed most of the
issues I've come across. However the problem I can't seem to solve is why
the rrd files aren't being generated. When I follow the link to the extended
data for the service I get an error that the rrd dir is empty. In looking
through the file system this is correct.

Looking through nagios.log shows that data is being collected.
Looking through the service-perfdata file shows data is being collected.
As is host-perfdata
The nagiosgraph.log file is empty.

Sorry I don't have more info than that. Any direction and help would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Hello,

Unfortunately the C3750 and C2960 don't have any temperature sensors
(they don't show anything in degrees)

Ex:
access#sh env all
FAN is OK
TEMPERATURE is OK
SW PID Serial# Status Sys Pwr PoE Pwr Watts
-- -- -- --- --- --- -
 1 FixedGood

SW Status RPS Name RPS Serial# RPS Port#
-- - --- -
1 Not Present <>

I don't have any web interface installed on it..as I'm quite paranoid
about having web stuff installed on routers from a security point of view.

>1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.13.1.3.1.3.1005 where 1005 is the sensor number - try
>doing an snmpwalk one step up in the oid tree and you should get all

I tried doing a walk one step up but no luck..it doesn't have that OID.

All I could find was:

chassisTempAlarm.0 = 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.2.13.0 shows 1 = off

I presume (correct me if I'm wrong) that the previous chassisTempAlarm
was what I was looking for (I guess it should become 2 = on in case of a
heat problem).

If so then I'll use snmp with this to monitor the status of my equipments.

I belive that is handled by the 'Check For Orphaned Services' option:

"This option allows you to enable or disable checks for orphaned service
checks. Orphaned service checks are checks which have been executed and
have been removed from the event queue, but have not had any results
reported in a long time. Since no results have come back in for the
service, it is not rescheduled in the event queue. This can cause
service checks to stop being executed. Normally it is very rare for this
to happen - it might happen if an external user or process killed off
the process that was being used to execute a service check. If this
option is enabled and Nagios finds that results for a particular service
check have not come back, it will log an error message and reschedule
the service check. If you start seeing service checks that never seem to
get rescheduled, enable this option and see if you notice any log
messages about orphaned services."

[Nagios-users] Question about Next Scheduled Active Check

2007-07-23 Thread Andy Moran

Occasionally my nagios installation will stop checking some tests..
When I look, it'll say "Next Scheduled Active Check" with a time in
the past, or sometimes "N/A".Restarting Nagios seems to fix the
issue.

I'm running Nagios 2.4. Is this a known issue that's fixed in later
versions, or perhaps a configuration problem? (This is with 331
service checks, one Nagios server).

Re: [Nagios-users] cgi's missing

2007-07-23 Thread Jonathan Murray
You should refer to:

http://www.nagios.org/faqs/viewfaq.php?faq_id=55

as Giles Coochey suggests. If during the build process, statusmap.cgi
doesn't get built, it is most likely because there are missing packages
that are required. I also ran into this problem. Installing the missing
dependencies and then following the instructions worked well.

I had the same problem. I found that they had been built when I made the
software, but they didn't get copied to the correct directory. I guess that's
something that gets done manually.

In my case I had to copy

/usr/local/src/nagios-2.8/cgi/statusmap.cgi (where I built it)

to:
/usr/local/nagios/sbin/statusmap.cgi

also make sure you check your configure log after you run your ./configure,
there are dependencies that are required for some of the cgi's to be built.

Set up each user with two separate contact definitions, for example
"Thomas-Glanzman-email" and "Thomas-Glanzmann-sms".

Set up contact groups "admins-email" and "admins-sms".

In the service definitions, specify whichever contact_groups are appropriate.

I'm sure there a many other ways of doing this, but this is
broadly-speaking how I do it.

sudo and nagios eventhandler should do it. For security reasons,
be as specific as possible in your sudo configuration, e.g.:

[snip]
nagios ALL=NOPASSWD:/etc/init.d/tomcat restart
[snip]

You'll have to look in nagios doco for eventhandlers,
i've never used them.

Another alternative, that we use here successfully, is
to use monit from http://www.tildeslash.com/monit.
Works like a charm and is a bit easier to setup than nagios
eventhandlers (I think:). In monit you define simple criterias
and subsequent actions, like restart. For example: memory out
of bounds: restart, process missing: start, etc.

Hope this helps
/Lars

Re: [Nagios-users] Cisco 3750, 2960 temperature status

2007-07-23 Thread Esben Bach
I added temperature monitoring of our C3750 stack (mrtg not nagios) just
the other day - the oid is something like
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.13.1.3.1.3.1005 where 1005 is the sensor number - try
doing an snmpwalk one step up in the oid tree and you should get all
your available sensors.

For nagios there is a package called "snmp4nagios" (i think its on
nagiosexchange not sure though) and in this package is a
"check_cisco_temp" that checks the temperature sensors.

Use the 'sudo' command.
Alternately: write a short program in C, that is setuid root, that execs the
init script.

You MUST think carefully about the security implications of doing this - put
appropriate
checks in.

[Nagios-users] execute command as root user

2007-07-23 Thread Martin Koeck
Hello,

I know this is more OS related and not so much nagios related, but I
thought maybe somebody has stumbled across this:

I need, on a critical failure that is trapped by nagios (this works for
me), to restart an application which I usually restart as root user on
this machine.

To be specific: Tomcat is giving up work now and then on this machine, I
can trap it, and need to restart it. Normally I do this by
/etc/init.d/tomcat restart -- but I need to be root for this, so nagios
cannot do this automatically for me, because it runs as nagios user.

What is the best way to approach this ? Changing the owner of the
tomcat-related startup files so that nagios can do it ? Writing a file
on-critical-error and restarting tomcat (as a cron-job), whenever that
file exists ? Something else ?

Regards,
Martin

Sure... either simply remove the host check from the hosts definition,
or - what I would do - use the ftp check as a host check also.
