[Nagios-users] distributed monitoring host checking question

2008-07-30 Thread Tom Ammon
Hi,

I am working on setting up a distributed monitoring system with Nagios
(actually Groundwork). I have 3 child servers and 1 parent server, using
NSCA to send passive check results from the children to the parent server.

My question is about how Nagios (version 2.5) will behave when an on
demand host check needs to be run.

So for example:

Host A is configured with check_host_alive ( a simple ping ) as its host
check command on the parent server. It is also configured with Service
A, say an SNMP check. Active host checks are not disabled on the parent
server, but active service checks are.

Host A, obviously, is also configured on the child server. When the
child server sends a passive check result up to the parent saying that
the SNMP check has failed, will the parent server then run the on-demand
host check command to verify that Host A is still up? If not, how do I
get that information up to the parent? Are passive host checks my only
option?

So I guess the question is this: In a distributed monitoring setup, will
a parent server run an on-demand host check for a host that gets a
report (via a passive service check sent from a child server) of a
service being critical?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi all,

If I remember correctly status.cgi allowed for HTML code to be inserted
in the plugin output as well as the column for Status Information when
looking at service detail. Is it no longer available? At the moment I
have nagios 3.0.2 running and HTML is not being interpreted correctly.

Sorry for asking this since I always configure and compile sources prior to

You're still not checking the disk devices themselves. md devices are
software raid groups so /dev/md3, etc are likely to be comprised of
multiple disks. Do you know the kind and number of disks that you have
 installed in this machine?

'cat /proc/mdstat'. That should show you the drive partitions that
make up the md devices. Again, look for 'sda, sdb, etc' or 'hda, hdb,
 etc'.

 You could always just try running 'check_smartmon -d /dev/hda -v 3' or
 'check_smartmon -d /dev/sda -v 3' to see if it's even going to work.
One of those is going to exist at a minimum.

As indicated a few different ways in previous e-mails, I expect you
should use '-d /dev/sda' or '-d /dev/sdb', not '-d /dev/sdb1' since
that is a specific partition on a disk, and not the disk device itself.

As indicated a few different ways in previous e-mails, I expect you
 should use '-d /dev/sda' or '-d /dev/sdb', not '-d /dev/sdb1' since
that is a specific partition on a disk, and not the disk device itself.

[Nagios-users] Notifications sent in scheduled downtime

2008-07-30 Thread Andy Shellam
Hi,

I have 3 services - Director Scheduler Agent, Director Storage Agent,
and Director Client Agent. I had to upgrade these 3 services, so I
scheduled fixed downtime for an hour on the scheduler agent, and fixed
downtime on the storage and client agent setting triggered by to the
downtime record of the scheduler.

However, the storage and client agent still keep sending out
notifications even though they are in downtime. Also, there is no
downtime (Zzzz) icon next to the storage and client agent in the
Services Overview. In the service details, it shows the downtime record
as a comment, but says in scheduled downtime is NO:

In Scheduled Downtime? NO

This is my scheduled downtime grid for services:

[Nagios-users] contrib/check_snmp_disk_monitor.pl

2008-07-30 Thread JB Segal
I'm setting up a new n3 install from an existing n2 install.

The previous system used check_snmp_disk_monitor, a compiled binary
that uses the wrong libnetsnmp.so
version for the new machine. If anyone can point me at the source for
that, we might be able to stop right
here.

In the meantime, I'm trying to get contrib/check_snmp_disk_monitor.pl
working, however, it's just timing
out, where snmpwalk to the same host works just fine.

Has anyone seen this situation and gotten through it?

My VERY limited attempt to step through the script with perl -d hasn't
shed any light.

(New machine: centos4/x86_64, if it matters)

Thanks,
JB

[Nagios-users] Mailing List archive search function

2008-07-30 Thread Ian Masters
Which archives are you using? The archives linked off the support page
(at gmane) are working correctly --

I was using the archives at Sourceforge, where the list is hosted

 Searched gmane.gmane.network.nagios.user for nagios
Around 110 matching articles. Results 1-10.
58,556,716 articles searched in 0.996596 seconds.

OK, thanks, I guess I'll have to use that.

Ian

Use check-http --help from the command line for usage information.
Withing Nagios you should give the full path to the plugin (you might be
using a $USERn$ macro for plugin path though which is of if the path
defined properly in resources.cfg).
