[Nagios-users] Any GUI Configuration tool for Nagios 3.x recommendations?

2008-10-29 Thread Ian Masters
Hello

The last time I asked the list about this, there was very little
response, so I'm going to ask again.

I'd like to ask list members for their recommendations for front end
GUIs for configuring Nagios 3.x.

The Lilac Platform (http://www.lilacplatform.com/) looks interesting but
its dependency list is putting me off at the moment.

What else is good for Nagios 3.0.3 and upwards?

Command line is fine but I keep thinking that there must be more
interesting ways to spend the day ;)

Also I'd like to know that if I change my mind and don't want to use the
GUI any more, that my original Nagios data (cfg files) will still be
left in a usable form.

If no-one's interested this time, I promise to drop the subject.

Thanks

Ian Masters

Re: [Nagios-users] Any GUI Configuration tool for Nagios 3.xrecommendations?

2008-10-29 Thread Rachel Steffen
Hi,

An interesting project http://nagiosadmin.de

It works with an mysql db. Dependencies are php5 and some php5 libs.

Pro:
- easy to install
- simpel to handle/configure hosts and services (for admins without
linux/nagios knowledgement)
- languarge could be changed in the webconsole (german and english)
- host services could be configured with one click. I think they scann for open
ports on the host.

Neg:
- You have to build up you nagios system one more time. Existing nagios cfgs
can't be imported
- Timeperiods and Dependancies must be modified throu console. It is not
implementet (I don't know if it would be in future)
- The configuration will be saved to the mysqldb, so you can't go back.

Thats my opinion/"experience" with that program. I have installed it in my
nagios playground and configured it with some sample hosts and services.
I can't tell anything about performance in big installations.

Probably nowhere. Nagios 3.2 isn't out yet, so I'd be amazed if it was
available for download from anywhere at all.

"op5 Monitor" is Nagios with bells and whistles. It has a config UI
with support for Nagios 3. All of our 320 or so customers use it
with little to no hassle.

I can only recommend to try several out, and see which suits your needs
best. I only saw snag-view (a commercial solution) in production once,
and I think it's quite nice. (Their homepage seems to be only in german
though.)

> The Lilac Platform (http://www.lilacplatform.com/) looks interesting but

A product that calls its status "first alpha release" and says that "It
is not ready for production use"... Well. Thats what rather would put me
off, in the first place. :-)

The feature-set of centreon looks quite nice in my opinion
(http://www.centreon.com/Product/Features-Centreon-2.0.html), but I
didn't test it yet.
OK, it's not "stable" either, but RC7 looks still better than first
alpha ;-) .
Ah, but since you worry about dependencies...
Forget that centreon-thing I mentioned above.

Here is a collection of frontends I just found:

i recently setup a nagios cluster to use this

http://www.nagiosql.org/

i implemented this on nagios 3 even though it says its for nagios 2 and
i did not encounter issues - The MySQL db was setup in a master<->master
fashion and the front end used heartbeat. Used this to monitor ~2500
hosts with many many more services and it worked fine.

check it out

thanks

nagiosql can import standard configs - it also generates them out of the
db so i am not sure what you mean there.

the reason i used nagiosql was to enable our windows admins the ability
to add stuff to nagios and restart - so 'dumbing down' the configuring
of it if you will.
we had some pretty complex group etc and it all works fine.

It is opensource. It's just not (currently) licensed as
redistributable.

Then it is not "Open Source".

Open Source has a real honest to goodness definition, set by the
trademark holders.

http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd

And #1 on that list is "Free Redistribution".

So, no, it is most definitively NOT "open source".

Cheers,

nagiosql can import standard configs - it also generates them out of the
db so i am not sure what you mean there.

the reason i used nagiosql was to enable our windows admins the ability
to add stuff to nagios and restart - so 'dumbing down' the configuring
of it if you will.
we had some pretty complex group etc and it all works fine.

Nagiosql doesn't seem to support multiple parents though, unless I'm
mistaken?

I used Fruity for awhile (predecessor to Lilac) and that was a great
tool. Pretty easy to modify the code for use with nagios v3, but again,
this didn't support multiple parents which we use quite heavily here.
Lilac was a mare to install so I gave up and went back to command line..

Be interested to see if any good tools pop up out of this discussion

Re: [Nagios-users] Advanced authentication

2008-10-29 Thread Phillips, Dustin B (DBphillips)

Thanks for the replies.

Ultimately what we would like to do is authenticate the user via another
website that we already use as a "single sign-on" portal for other web
applications. Once they're logged in there, we would pass their username
over to Nagios via URL querystring or hidden form value, etc (not going for
maximum security). On the Nagios server we would use PHP to populate the
REMOTE_USER Apache ENV variable with the passed username so that Nagios can
compare that to the contacts and provide them with their applicable views.

Currently we are able to pass the username value to the Nagios server and we
appear to be populating the Apache ENV variable successfully via PHP using
"apache_setenv('REMOTE_USER', '[username]');" however when we then redirect
to the Nagios homepage, Nagios does not appear to be picking up the
username. It states that we're logged in as "?" and obviously nothing is
accessible.

Questions:

Is it necessary to modify the Nagios/cgi config in any way to achieve what
we're doing?
Is is necessary to modify the Apache config?
Is is necessary to set any other ENV variables besides REMOTE_USER?

Thanks for any assistance/guidance you can provide!

Dustin

[Nagios-users] Notification Timing Problem

2008-10-29 Thread MJK Nagios
Hello,

I seem to be having a rather difficult time getting notifications to
work the way that I would like. I'm using a test host to have Nagios
generate alerts when I take it offline. Nagios detects and sends
notifications for the host coming back on-line very quickly. What I'm
doing in order to test my config is to then simulate that the host
fails again in a few minutes. The problem I'm seeing is that it takes
Nagios 15-20 minutes to send a notification that the host is again
down. This would be useless to me in a production environment; if the
host drops again -- I need to know about it immediately.

OK, I've been through the docs and have checked everything that seems
to make sense in order to figure out this issue -- with no success.
I'm running Nagios 3.0.2. Please see some output I've included below
to see the time lag between when Nagios notices the host is down again
and when it sends the notification.

Thanks!

-Matt

[Nagios-users] Unable to create Service Groups

2008-10-29 Thread Kahlon, Robby
Hi All,

I am a newbie using Nagios 2.0 and it works fine. I monitor
services/hosts and use Nagios QL to configure Nagios.

I can create Host Groups to group the hosts which I am monitoring but
can't create Service Groups for some reason. I have grouped two services
in a group using NagiosQL but Nagios doesn't show this Service Group.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Robby

What does the config file look like for these services and the service
group? Did you reload the config into Nagios after the change? Any
warnings at that time?
