strange, as i retry this evening, `nagios -v ...` now gives me error lines.
i believe i only change some permissions.

does nagios give some warning if it can't access some files ? or if
permission directory is incorrect ?
Maybe a warning could help

thanks for the help

I might be wrong, but as far as I know Nagios 2.x performs a host check
on each service failure, and notify for that service only if the host is
not in HARD DOWN state after the last check (when the service enter the
HARD state and the host check has already been perfiormed for that last
failure). I guess it also performs one on state changes, and possibly
not when services are already in a hard critical state, to detect host
up (haven't really read on that but that seems to be the logical thing
to do).

With Nagios 3.x, there's scheduled host checks and result caching in the
mix, so that :
1. not every service failure will result in a host check
2. Host checks are not run serially like they did in nagios 2.x, which
was by far the biggest bottleneck.

The official Nagios documentation explains the check logic in details if
you read it thoughtfully.

[Nagios-users] GroundWork (Nagios) Service Checks/Host Checks

2008-11-10 Thread Sean O`Brien
Dear All,

I have been studying GroundWork monitor, with reference of course to Nagios.

I hope someone can answer my query.

Re: Nagios 2.x

It is my understanding that when all the service checks fail, Nagios performs
host checks; the number of which we have specified to 3. At which point (after
reporting that Host is in a "Non-okay" state)
Nagios resumes service checks. It is at this point my question lies. When does
Nagios perform another host check? Would it be after all the service checks are
reported "Okay" or will Nagios perform a
host check after the first service check reports "okay".

Thank you to all in advance for taking the time to read this and respond, it`s
highly appreciated.

Kind Regards.

[Nagios-users] first_notification_delay does not work - nagios-3.0.5

Hi, i found something strange in nagios-3.0.5, the
first_notification_delay just works fine if the max_check_attempts is
set to 1. If the max_check_attempts is set to more than 1 the
notification is sent immediately after the last check attempt.

Did you read the update part about the changes between 2.x and 3x
configuration files?

Having done 2 upgrades on 2 differnet system with rather different
configurations I must say the upgrade was not as complicated as I
expected. The worst case took me 10 minutes to make the required changes.

My first guess is that you hit the character limit for SMS messages. To
the best of my knowledge you can have only 160 bytes per message.

And most email to SMS gateways do not handle content over this single
message limit.

If this does not apply you might want to add more details to your
problem description.

Just curious. What is wrong with defining contacts to be individuals and
contact groups for the specific areas people are responsible for?

- From a logical point I find it a bit hard to see why you would need to
add individuals besides groups to devices.

Sometimes it pays of in the long run to be a bit stubborn about adding
not to many exceptions. Exceptions have a tendency to take on a life of
their own and triple your workload.

We had a similar problem (not using SSH, though). We use this script to

Using the templates, we do something like (or, exactly like) this...

You can pretty easily modify that to be:

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios acknowledgement (with check_logfiles plugin)

2008-11-10 Thread Kyle O'Donnell
We configure check logfiles as a volatile service and choose not to
use the sticky option. Some logs we configure check-logfiles to send
a message via nsca for each pattern match, ensuring we don't miss any
notifications. We also configure check-logfiles services not to send
out recovery messages, and only schedule downtime or disable
notifications during maintenance.

I am using the latest version of Nagios. I am doing most of my checks
using NRPE and I noticed that when it e-mails or pages me about an
alert some of the information from the error appears to be getting cut
off, is there a way to make it so that it e-mails me the entire
message and not to have it cut off some of the text? I am not sure if
there is a limit in Nagios on the error that nagios can handle?

Any information would be appreciated.

Devin

Email alerts are just another command in the commands.cfg file. By
default it uses the 'mail' program, and pipes in the body. For certain
alerts, we have written a perl script that uses Net::SMTP to send much
nicer and more detailed messages.

That's the beauty of Nagios... almost everything can be replaced or
modified like that.

Errors from the configuration check are usually printed inline with the
output - check the entire output from Nagios and it should give you the
relevant line.

[Nagios-users] Nagios acknowledgement (with check_logfiles plugin)

2008-11-10 Thread Jim Winkle
We're deploying Nagios (currently using 3.0.2) for our Unix servers, and I have
a question about acknowledgement.

We're using the check_logfiles plugin to monitor syslogs (e.g.
/var/adm/messages on Solaris). check_logfiles returns CRITICAL when it detects
a problem, but then normally clears itself (returns OK) the next time it runs.
Nagios notifies us only once under this scenerio, and since it's possible that
pagers might miss just one page (paging services aren't 100% reliable), we'd
rather get notified until we explicitly acknowledge the problem.

The check_logfiles plugin does have the capability to continue to report the
error (using its "sticky" option). This is good since then we're notified
longer, but if we then use the Nagios "Acknowledge" link to acknowledge the
problem, new problems (e.g. new errors in /var/adm/messages) reported by the
check_logfiles plugin get ignored.

My question: Is there a way with Nagios to acknowledge a problem reported by a
plugin like check_logfiles without ignoring future problems? Or would this be
new functionality needed in Nagios? I realize we can syslog an "okpattern"
string and check_logfiles will then clear, but I'm looking for something using
the Nagios web (and external command_file) interfaces. Using the Nagios
"Acknowledge" link would be ideal, since that's what folks are going to be
using for other problems.

Nagios and the check_logfiles plugin are great tools... perhaps I'm simply
missing something.

Thanks in advance!

[Nagios-users] migrate 2.9 to 3.0: check configuration failed

2008-11-10 Thread Julien TOUCHE

Hello

i'm trying to migrate my nagios install on 3.0. i use openbsd (4.4) with
nagios port.

after updating my configuration with (1), i get

>>>
# nagios -v `pwd`/nagios.cfg

Nagios 3.0.3

***> One or more problems was encountered while processing the config

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.
<<<

Same thing if i comment all lines with cfg_file=
same with example files from the port, which i suppose are the ones from
nagios distrib.
Please note, i've remove all files from previous install, only
restoring/updating config.

As there is no file/line highlighted to look for the error, i don't know
what to do. i didn't have any problems on 2.9.

any ideas to locate error ?

thanks

[Nagios-users] Increase output from nagios alert e-mails/pages?

2008-11-10 Thread Devin Atencio

I am using the latest version of Nagios. I am doing most of my checks
using NRPE and I noticed that when it e-mails or pages me about an
alert some of the information from the error appears to be getting cut
off, is there a way to make it so that it e-mails me the entire
message and not to have it cut off some of the text? I am not sure if
there is a limit in Nagios on the error that nagios can handle?

Any information would be appreciated.

Devin

[Nagios-users] disabling checks of all service and host no longer works

2008-11-10 Thread Seth Simmons

Ever since I upgraded to 3.0.5 I noticed that if I select a host and
choose 'disable checks on all services on this host' then select for
host also, it doesn't do anything. If I disable the host check and
service checks individually it works, but never all at once.

I did notice, however, that if I select to disable checks of all
services and don't check to disable for the host also, it will actually
disable checks for all services - but not if I include the host.

Anyone else notice that?

Re: [Nagios-users] Notification Recovery Issue

2008-11-10 Thread Sotiroff, Kristian
Here's a thought: could it be that your original contact list don't get
notified because you are in an escalation period? Thus the original list
is out of reach.

One thing you could try is creating a new list (lfisher_ooh) and then
set this group to get the alerts during escalation periods but only
'recovery' alerts (ie. notification_options r)

Herein lies my problem. I've inherited supporting our Nagios system.
It was pre-configured and set-up by a previous employee. I've gone
over the web-based manual, but can't find specifics like this defined
in the manual.

I was tasked with updating all of the groups and contacts, but need to
make sure that I get it set up correctly.

Re: [Nagios-users] hosts.config

2008-11-10 Thread Layne Meier
Would it be okay then to have a host entry in the hosts.cfg file like
this based upon the response I received from Dennis Hünsler:

define host{
host_name bogus-router
alias Bogus Router #1
address 192.168.1.254
parents server-backbone
check_command check-host-alive
max_check_attempts 5
check_period24x7
process_perf_data 0
retain_nonstatus_information0
contact_groups router-admins
contactslmeier
notification_interval 30
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsd,u,r
}

Hi Layne,

regarding the config you can configure contacts in stead of complete
groups, but the keyword is contacts not contact as in your example :-)

contacts: This is a list of the short names of the contacts that
should be notified whenever there are problems (or recoveries) with
this host. Multiple contacts should be separated by commas. Useful if
you want notifications to go to just a few people and don't want to
configure contact groups. You must specify at least one contact or
contact group in each host definition.

I have a question for anyone that can answer this for me. From the
documentation, in configuring a host, this is the example given:

 define host{
host_name bogus-router
alias Bogus Router #1
address 192.168.1.254
parents server-backbone
check_command check-host-alive
max_check_attempts 5
check_period24x7
process_perf_data 0
retain_nonstatus_information0
contact_groups router-admins
notification_interval 30
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsd,u,r
}
In place of the contact_groups as being defined as router-admins, can
you put the name of an actual person there (from the contacts.cfg) ie;

define host{
host_name bogus-router
alias Bogus Router #1
address 192.168.1.254
parents server-backbone
check_command check-host-alive
max_check_attempts 5
check_period24x7
process_perf_data 0
retain_nonstatus_information0
contact_groups lmeier
notification_interval 30
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsd,u,r
}
Or is there a different command that needs to go there:
define host{
host_name bogus-router
alias Bogus Router #1
address 192.168.1.254
parents server-backbone
check_command check-host-alive
max_check_attempts 5
check_period24x7
process_perf_data 0
retain_nonstatus_information0
contact lmeier
notification_interval 30
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsd,u,r
}

[Nagios-users] Bug in ndo2db or Nagios?

2008-11-10 Thread Mies, Christian
Hi List,
I have the following situation. I try to connect to the NDO and want to
get informations about Downtimes that will be set, or was set. The
nagios_downtimehistory is shown each downtime. Also them who set in the
future.

If I try do remove a Downtime, that is set in the Future in the Nagios
Interface, the NDO still show the Downtime with the flag 'was
cancelled=0'. In the Nagios Interface the Downtime is removed.

The 'event_broker_options' is set to '-1'.
My NDO Version is 1.4b7 and Nagios is Version 3.0.5

Any ideas or suggestions.

Regards
Christian

Re: [Nagios-users] Notification Recovery Issue

2008-11-10 Thread Leah Fisher
Sorry, I should have included that. I'm using version 3.0.5 on RHEL4 ES.

I get recoveries if the host escalations do not take effect and I can see in
the event log that the notification was just sent to my escalation group
once the escalation group gets a notification.

2008-11-10 Thread Assaf Flatto
Which version are you using ?

Do you also have them in the contact groups with the recovery option defined in
the host/service
definition

Myself i am using the same issue and we get the alert for both the faiure and
recovery ,however i
use 2.12 .

[Nagios-users] Notification Recovery Issue

2008-11-10 Thread Leah Fisher
I have been noticing an issue with notifications that I wanted to run by
everyone before I report it as a bug. I'm also hoping someone who is on the
development list can let me know if this has already been reported. I use
escalations to suppress notifications on weekends so when no one is around
to fix something, we don't have a very full inbox come Monday. So, on non
work hours, I have a host escalation that goes to a false email starting
from notification 2 to infinity. This works great, but if the host recovers
during the escalation period, recovery notifications only go to the
escalation user, not all the users that were notified of the problem. This
becomes a problem as certain management folk don't seem to know how to go to
the website to look at the status and think things are still down without a
recovery notification. I am not sure about service alerts, but I know this
has not worked for quite some time on host alerts.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks,

Leah
