[Nagios-users] Undetected flapping URL monitor - how to fix?

2009-06-02 Thread Sean Carolan
We ran into a situation over the weekend where a particular URL
monitor was flapping back and forth between OK and CRITICAL every ten
minutes or so. We have it set up so the monitor only goes into a HARD
state and sends an alert after three successive failures. The issue
is that there was a real, legitimate problem with the configuration
that was causing it to flop around like this, but nobody got alerted
because it never went into HARD state.

How would you handle this situation? We need to be notified when
these kinds of situations arise in the future.

I have considered and done some preliminary research on developing the
app for the Blackberry. The Blackberry SDK is nowhere near as powerful
as that of the iPhone, and also, the amount of memory available to
running software is also quite a bit less, so as a result, the options
are somewhat limited on that platform.

I cannot directly compare it, since I do not know anything about
iPhone development, but I can't believe that the BB SDK is so far
less powerful compared to the iPhone SDK.
Which SDK did you check out? BB offers 3 (or was it 2?) different
SDKs for the 3 different methods of coding for BBs.

- the web applications: very, very easy, but surely also very limited
- MDS applications: easy to code, but still more powerful then
  webapplications
- pure Java applications: can do basically everything you
  want them to do

If you already have a Java application, it shouldn't be too
hard to port it to Blackberry I think?

Sascha,

app for the Blackberry. The Blackberry SDK is nowhere near as powerful
as that of the iPhone, and also, the amount of memory available to
running software is also quite a bit less, so as a result, the options
are somewhat limited on that platform.

I have investigated the Google Android platform as another
possibility. All coding on Android is in Java. Its UI is, again, very
limited in comparison to the iPhone/iPod Touch, and the number of
people with those phones is also pretty small. Also up coming is the
new Palm Pre platform, which is quite interesting.

I am still researching the Blackberry development option. It'd be nice
to get an idea of demand. I wonder how many serious admins are using
Blackberry's vs. iPhones.

Daniel.

point to your nagios server, and you're done. If your server is
accessible through VPN, first set up your VPN connection on your

 Well, big question is:

Will it be available for real business phones too?
 Blackberry anyone? ;-)

Hi Denny,

Thanks for purchasing Brooklyn. SSL is not supported in the current
release. There will be an incremental release within the next two
weeks that will support SSL. I will inform the list at that time, and
then all you will need to do is perform an update of your application
and you will get the new functionality without any added cost. There
will be some other features and bug fixes in that release that we are
working on.

Thanks for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience. I will
update the App page to indicate that SSL is not supported yet.

Re: [Nagios-users] check_http oddness

2009-06-02 Thread Holger Weiss
* Janet Sullivan jsulli...@mndigital.com [2009-06-01 10:45]:
Check_http reports a timeout, however, a packet capture shows that
 data was in fact received.

 Data Sent:

   GET /admin/ping?auser=XXXapaswd=XXX HTTP/1.0
   User-Agent: check_http/v2053 (nagios-plugins 1.4.13)
   Connection: close

 Data Received:

   HTTP/1.0 200 OK
   Connection: Keep-Alive

While the plugin expects the server to close the connection after
sending the response, the server initiates a HTTP/1.0-style persistent
connection. The plugin doesn't handle this properly and awaits more
data until it runs into the timeout.

Could you check whether you can reproduce the problem using the current
snapshot and the -H option (in which case the plugin should request an
HTTP/1.1 connection)? See:

http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/snapshot/

Thanks, Holger

Does this work as the user NRPE runs as? You should never test nagios-

paths and waste a lot of time.

 Any clues would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion. I was able to get it fixed. Check_hpasm
plugin needs to be run with root privileges. So, on locsys,

1. I had to allow the user NRPE runs as (xyzuser), privileges to the
command /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_hpasm in /etc/sudoers

xyzuser
ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/hpasmcli,/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_hpasm

(Note that check_hpasm documentation already mentions giving sudo access
to nrpe user for /sbin/hpasmcli).

and

2. Define the check_hpasm command in nrpe.cfg prefixed with sudo as
follows:

command[check_hpasm]=sudo /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_hpasm

Interestingly, I already had the above in my /etc/sudoers when I was
getting the error. I tried to run /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_hpasm
as xyzuser and it prompted me for a password (apparently it was trying
to use sudo on its own).

Allowing /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_hpasm in /etc/sudoers to
xyzuser and then defining the check_hpasm command in nrpe.cfg prefixed
with sudo fixed the problem.

[Nagios-users] notification by host

2009-06-02 Thread Dong Chen
Hi,

We have quite a few servers. In nagios config, each server inherites from
multiple hostgroup, such as hardware, os, applications. Right now, different
class of alerts, e.g. harddrive alerts, from all the machines are sending to
the same contact person. What would be an easiest way to modify the current
configuration that all the alerts for a particular machine is (also) send to
one person?

For example, we have
host 1 running service A, service B, service C
host 2 running service A, service B, service C
host 3 running service A, service B, service C
All the alerts from host 1,2,3  for service A go to John;
alerts from host 1,2,3 for service B go to Jack;
...
Now, I would want all the alert for service A,B,C from host also be sent to Joe.

Thanks,

I'd recommend you read about and use escalations to do notifications
for custom groups of hosts and services:

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/escalations.html

We use escalations for just this purpose as we have a number of
service definitions that are associated with host groups that our end
users cannot modify, while they can modify/create/delete their own
escalation definitions. The one thing to keep in mind if you go the
escalation route is that OK state escalations need to be separate
escalation definitions with a last notification of 1 so that the OK is
only sent out one time.

functions, so that's an awfully broad question.

  hello Ethan,
Really I want to appreciate your work on Nagios it is
  really a wonderful solution.
I have a challenge with monitoring with Nagios 3.0.6.
My network diagram is somehow complex and I want Nagios to
  monitoring it accurately for me.

All my remote sites are connected to a Hub while they take
Internet access from the head office that is remote. I am at
the monitoring office which is different from both the head
  office and the remotes sites.

Since they get their internet access from the headoffice, I
want nagios to monitoring it in such a way that once the
head office goes down, all remote regardless of the fact
that they are not connected to he headoffice directly. How
  do I do this.

I have done a parent/child relationship btw the headoffice
and the remotes but the remote still remain up when the
headoffice goes down. I have done host dependencies but it
  is still thesame thing.
  please help.
I am using sles10 SP2 with nagios 3.0.6 with nagiosql,
  NdoUtils and Nagvis1.4.

Expecting your reply cos it is really challenging.

As long as you have the parenting set up correctly, Nagios should do
exactly what you want. With very little to go on, it sounds like you're
set up like this:

Nagios --- Head Office -- Remote Office

Assuming everything has a parent on it, and the chain of parents leads
directly back ifrom the Remote Office to the Nagios box, everything should
just work.
