[Nagios-users] Undetected flapping URL monitor - how to fix?
We ran into a situation over the weekend where a particular URL monitor was flapping back and forth between OK and CRITICAL every ten minutes or so. We have it set up so the monitor only goes into a HARD state and sends an alert after three successive failures. The issue is that there was a real, legitimate problem with the configuration that was causing it to flop around like this, but nobody got alerted because it never went into HARD state. How would you handle this situation? I have considered and done some preliminary research on developing the app for the Blackberry. The Blackberry SDK is nowhere near as powerful as that of the iPhone, and also, the amount of memory available to running software is also quite a bit less, so as a result, the options are somewhat limited on that platform. I cannot directly compare it, since I do not know anything about iPhone development, but I can't believe that the BB SDK is so far less powerful compared to the iPhone SDK. Which SDK did you check out? BB offers 3 (or was it 2?) different SDKs for the 3 different methods of coding for BBs. - the web applications: very, very easy, but surely also very limited - MDS applications: easy to code, but still more powerful then webapplications - pure Java applications: can do basically everything you want them to do If you already have a Java application, it shouldn't be too hard to port it to Blackberry I think? Sascha, I have considered and done some preliminary research on developing the app for the Blackberry. The Blackberry SDK is nowhere near as powerful as that of the iPhone, and also, the amount of memory available to running software is also quite a bit less, so as a result, the options are somewhat limited on that platform. I have investigated the Google Android platform as another possibility. All coding on Android is in Java. Its UI is, again, very limited in comparison to the iPhone/iPod Touch, and the number of people with those phones is also pretty small. Also up coming is the new Palm Pre platform, which is quite interesting. I am still researching the Blackberry development option. It'd be nice to get an idea of demand. I wonder how many serious admins are using Blackberry's vs. iPhones. Daniel. On Jun 2, 2009, at 2:19 AM, sascha.runsc...@gfkl.com wrote: This app is different from iNag and other similar iPhone applications that use Nagios in that it does not require any changes whatsoever to your Nagios server. Hi Denny, Thanks for purchasing Brooklyn. SSL is not supported in the current release. There will be an incremental release within the next two weeks that will support SSL. I will inform the list at that time, and then all you will need to do is perform an update of your application and you will get the new functionality without any added cost. There will be some other features and bug fixes in that release that we are working on. Thanks for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience. I think a better approach for Blackberry, and the one I am started on, is to do this as a web UI for blackberry. I have started on a PHP-based UI that is Blackberry friendly for our corporate users to use; if it turns out to be useful enough to share with others I will definitely do so as a GPL project. The first functionality I am implementing is acknowledging alerts with comments via blackberry and viewing the states of hosts and services via blackberry .. things that our SAs care about most when a notification comes in at 2 am :p. - Max -- OpenSolaris 2009.06 is a cutting edge operating system for enterprises looking to deploy the next generation of Solaris that includes the latest innovations from Sun and the OpenSource community. I have a challenge with monitoring with Nagios 3.0.6. My network diagram is somehow complex and I want Nagios to monitoring it accurately for me. All my remote sites are connected to a Hub while they take Internet access from the head office that is remote. I am at the monitoring office which is different from both the head office and the remotes sites. Since they get their internet access from the headoffice, I want nagios to monitoring it in such a way that once the head office goes down, all remote regardless of the fact that they are not connected to he headoffice directly. How do I do this. I have done a parent/child relationship btw the headoffice and the remotes but the remote still remain up when the headoffice goes down. I have done host dependencies but it is still thesame thing. please help. I am using sles10 SP2 with nagios 3.0.6 with nagiosql, NdoUtils and Nagvis1.4. Expecting your reply cos it is really challenging. As long as you have the parenting set up correctly, Nagios should do exactly what you want. With very little to go on, it sounds like you're set up like this: Nagios --- Head Office -- Remote Office Assuming everything has a parent on it, and the chain of parents leads directly back ifrom the Remote Office to the Nagios box, everything should just work. -- OpenSolaris 2009.06 is a cutting edge operating system for enterprises looking to deploy the next generation of Solaris that includes the latest innovations from Sun and the OpenSource community.
