Re: [Nagios-users] NDOUTILS install problem

2009-07-31 Thread Christoph Stoettner
Hi,

Perhaps you should use 1.4b8? Think it isn't a good way to try fix errors in
old releases.

[Nagios-users] redefining a service

2009-07-31 Thread Monty
This might not be possible, since I can't seem to find any details in
the documentation.

I am trying to redefine a service on a host which is already defined
through use of service groups and host groups.

Example.
All services on all hosts are defined identically through the use of groups.
1 server on 1 host is required to have custom changes (in this case, a
different max_check_attempts).
If I try to define this service individually, nagios complains it is
already defined through the use of groups.

So quite simply - is there any way I can redefine the service,
overriding the other definition. Or alternatively is there any other
way I can achieve my objective?

Thanks.

[Nagios-users] Tomcat Monitoring?

2009-07-31 Thread D. Emmanuel Feinsmith

Greetings,

Can anyone tell me if there are any best practices on monitoring
Tomcat using Nagios? Specifically, I'm looking for a combination of
log parsing, authentication entries and denials, session usage, memory
and process utilization, etc.

Thanks!

Hi Emmanuel,

For memory, process utilization you can easily do that. Are you running a
specific web app on Tomcat? If that is the case, you need to build the log
and reporting in the app.

[Nagios-users] Discrepancy between avail.cgi and history.cgi

2009-07-31 Thread Matthew Tice
Hello, I'm trying to determine the number of time a service went critical.
If I choose the option "View alert history for this service" I see where my
service went critical. If I choose "View availability report for this
service" everything comes back at 100% OK. My log files rotate weekly and I
made sure to select "last 7 days" when trying to view the availability. I
don't understand the discrepancy between the two. Any help would be
appreciated.

I'm using Nagios-3.0.3.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: [Nagios-users] Tomcat Monitoring?

2009-07-31 Thread Gerhard Lausser
Hi Daniel,

you might have a look at http://www.jmx4perl.org
It's a small war-file which handles all the Java stuff and exports
everything JMX through a restful HTTP interface.
On the Nagios side you have a perl module JMX::Jmx4Perl and the plugin
check_jmx4perl.
We use it to monitor heapsize, thread created/sec, active threads,
filedescriptors, bytesrcvd/sent ...
The advantage over check_jmx is, you have 1. no need for Java on the client
side, 2. one solution for every type of app server, 3. the possibility to
measure increase/sec
