[Nagios-users] Clarification on Check_Load Plugin

2010-03-26 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

The check load plugin gives 1 min , 5 min and 15 min average load on the
target machine.

My question is: How does the plugin claculate the 1 min avg load , 5 min
avg load and 15 min avg load.
Take the case of 1 min avg load :
-- How many data points does it use to calulcate the average ?
-- Does it internally do the checks every 5 secs or 10 secs ? What
is the number of secs that it internally polls to calculate the average ?
-- On similar lines how does it do for 5 min and 15 min loads ?

Please clarify.

Thanks
Jatin

Thanks everyone for your suggestions... In the end, I gave up on
using either NSClient++ or the Nagios EventLog Agent to check my
windows event logs. While I certainly will admit the problem
still may have been with me, I have come to the conclusion that
either they're not designed to do what I needed (to find a single
event ID) or they're inconsistent/under-documented.

I ended up going with check_logfiles from ConSol:

http://labs.consol.de/lang/en/nagios/check_logfiles/

Not only are the developers responsive, but it *works*. I use
it with a very flexible definition via NSClient++, and so far
it's performing *exactly* like I need. :)

Thanks again, everyone!

I just finished revamping this very process. I used to use nsca but I wanted to
use a better approach that was easier to maintain and didn't have unneeded deps
on my Nagios server.

At the start of my script, I bring a passive check into a warning state with an
snmp trap, at the end of my script, I check exit codes and now send an snmp trap
based on this code as to whether or not it failed or passed.

A freshness check makes sure it even ran, and alerts on the status of it
failing.

Works very well.

For the record, my trap parsing is very flexible in that one script handles the
passive
check updates for any service based on the service name.

Hi Andreas,

When untarring nagios-plugins-1.4.13.tar.gz there's already a compiled version
sitting nagios-plugins-1.4.13/plugins-root/check_icmp which has the behaviour
you were referring to. It has only 2 performance output parameters.

Although when compiling the complete nagios-plugins package I end up with
check_icmp in libexec which has 4 performance output parameters.

The first one is the one I'm going to use now in my dev env.

Thanks for pointing out,

jelle

Yes indeed, but it has 2 extra performance output values rtmax and rtmin.
This makes pnp4nagios complain it now receives 4 values instead of 2 and as a
result not updating the graphs...

Adding DS's to all RRD's would bring me too far

[Nagios-users] Checking Windows Backup (ntbackup)

Hi,

I've had a look around and I can't see a plugin for checking if a standard
windows backup (using ntbackup) has been successful or not. A requirement
has come up for me to monitor this on a Win XP based host. Am I missing
something, or does someone have a plugin that will do this?

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios NRPE: Unable to read output

Hi Alen,

I don't know much about this plugin, but it looks like your command
requires root permission.

Thus you would need to setup a sudo command to run
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/tsmonitor db

Then use your new sudo command in your nrpe.cfg :

command[tsmonitor_db]=sudo /usr/local/nagios/libexec/tsmonitor db

Cheers,

Quentin

What you have defined is the handler 'check_cpu' In this section
[External Scripts]. Those are for NRPE if I recall correctly although
I never used that section for NRPE, I use [NRPE Handlers] instead for
my custom commands.

and here you have not defined anything, there is no LHS=RHS
combination. I suppose that what you meant is
check_cpu=scripts\check_cpu.exe. Restart the nsclientpp service and
try again.

Re: [Nagios-users] NSCA and Windows

2010-03-26 Thread Klein, Oliver
Hi Kevin,

thx i think that is what we need. But I have some problems to get this plugins
work with nsclient. Any idea about this?
This is the error massage in syslog on the nagios server

Mar 26 15:04:41 nagios nagios: EXTERNAL COMMAND:
PROCESS_SERVICE_CHECK_RESULT;sonicwall2;C:\NSCLIENT++\scripts\check_cpu.exe;3;Command
 was not found:
Mar 26 15:04:41 nagios nagios: Warning: Passive check result was received for
service 'C:\NSCLIENT++\scripts\check_cpu.exe' on host 'sonicwall2', but the
service could not be found!

So I define the following option in the nsc.ini

[External Scripts]
;check_es_long=scripts\long.bat
;check_es_ok=scripts\ok.bat
;check_es_nok=scripts\nok.bat
;check_vbs_sample=cscript.exe //T:30 //NoLogo scripts\check_vb.vbs
;check_powershell_warn=cmd /c echo scripts\powershell.ps1 | powershell.exe
-command -
check_cpu=scripts\check_cpu.exe

[NSCA Commands]
;my_cpu_check=checkCPU warn=80 crit=90 time=20m time=10s time=4
;my_mem_check=checkMem MaxWarn=80% MaxCrit=90% ShowAll type=page
;my_svc_check=checkServiceState CheckAll exclude=wampmysqld exclude=MpfService
;host_check=check_ok
C:\NSCLIENT++\scripts\check_cpu.exe

I tested it without path and other variations but with no luck. I hope someone
give me the right hint for the correct syntax

Best regards & nice weekend

The plugins are simply command-line programs. By convention, all plugins should
provide documentation when you start them with the -h switch.

You can find quite a few plugins on monitoringexchange.org . I wrote a
collection of plugins that you might find useful at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tntnagiosplugin/
I'm not using them with NSClient, but they should work with it just fine.

in the nsclient directory "modules" maybe we can use these plugins. Our problem
is, that we don´t know how to use these plugins, like the syntax.
Any help was appreciated

Use check_icmp instead. It does something like that, iirc.

Considering the successes of the wars on alcohol, poverty, drugs and
terror, I think we should give some serious thought to declaring war
on peace.

run ./configure --disable-ssl
and after that run the make command .

Or if you want ssl , install the openssl and openssl-devel packages for
your distribution .

[Nagios-users] Unable to install NRPE Addon

2010-03-26 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

While installing the NRPE addon , i am unable to issue the make all command.

Following the NRPE documentation, first i did ./configure command and
then when i gave the make all command , it shows me the following error:

[r...@pc-linux-1 nrpe-2.12]# make all
make: *** No rule to make target `all'. Stop.

I noticed the last step of the ./configure output was as below:

checking for closesocket... no
checking for socklen_t... yes
checking for type of socket size... size_t
checking for SSL headers... configure: error: Cannot find ssl headers

Please let me know what to do next.

Thanks
Jatin

[Nagios-users] Drop in replacement for check_ping wit hout performance output when device down

2010-03-26 Thread Jelle Smet

Hi List,

The default check_ping has an annoying feature I think and
that's it will produce performance output equal to the timeout when a host
is not reachable.
That means the RTA graphs are completely filled, while I
think they should be interrupted... by not producing performance output for
RTA but only for the packets lost.

To have this behaviour I'm looking for
a drop in replacement for check_ping which produces exactly the same
performance output labels as I don't want to recreate all my ping rrds

On
the other side I think it would make sense to at lease add this feature
through a command line switch for check_ping.

I'm using:

check_ping
v1.4.14 (nagios-plugins 1.4.14)
Copyright (c) 1999 Ethan Galstad
Copyright
(c) 2000-2007 Nagios Plugin Development Team

Use ping to check connection
statistics for a remote host.

Usage:check_ping -H -w ,% -c ,%
 [-p
packets] [-t timeout] [-4|-6]

Thanks for your advice and tips

[Nagios-users] Having multiple 'parents', how to do it right?

2010-03-26 Thread Kenneth Fribert
We have a few places where there are redundant paths.
One example is our VMWare farm, that comprises of several servers, running a
lot of virtual servers, which can move dynamically between servers.
So we've created the vmware servers, and under them are the virtual servers,
each virtual server thus have three 'parents'.

This works well, only problem is that the map display gets completely f.
up, and displays the branches that are redundant as empty boxes.
How do we do this better?
