The central collector knows about all hosts, services, service check commands, etc. (Since Nagios ignores passive data for hosts and services it doesn't recognize, it has to know about everything being monitored.) However, the central collector is configured to not run any active checks (except for monitoring the other collectors) and is configured to accept passive check data. The remote collectors are configured to run active service checks on their list of servers (ignoring passive data since they don't receive any) and does not generate any alerts or notifications. All of this is done by having the central collector use slightly modified host and service templates. > Thanks, > > Linus > > -- > This SF.net email is sponsored by > > Make an app they can't live without > Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge > http://p.sf.net/sfu/RIM-dev2dev > ___ > Nagios-users mailing list > Nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/nagios-users > ::: Please include Nagios version, plugin version (-v) and OS when reporting > any issue. > ::: Messages without supporting info will risk being sent to /dev/null > -- This SF.net email is sponsored by Make an app they can't live without Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge http://p.sf.net/sfu/RIM-dev2dev ___ Nagios-users mailing list Nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/nagios-users ::: Please include Nagios version, plugin version (-v) and OS when reporting any issue. ::: Messages without supporting info will risk being sent to /dev/null

[Nagios-users] Passive Host Status Check
Hi This is my first post... I have Nagios installed here, and there's some host's that use passive check, because I can't direct access this hosts... However, the host that do I monitor, always show me pedding state, 'cause I do not have an IP to direct connect to it! What can I do to monitor host state using passive checks??? [Nagios-users] Accessing an HMI????
All, I've been a sys admin and Nagios lover for years. But, with this one I'm out of of my depth. I have a client who needs an HMI (Maple Systems 5070 http://www.maplesystems.com/graphic-hmi/7-inch-ethernet-widescreen-touchscreen.htm) on a series of remote industrial machines monitored. I love the idea because it's so new to me and I love a challenge. But, has anyone had any experience with this type of situation? I've been playing around with the idea, testing various scenarios and feel a little lost. the HMI does store and output various system data, has alarms when thresholds are exceeded, etc - but unless you are looking at it's screen you would never know. Any help, guidance or suggestions would be a huge help! --- Luke Salsich -- The Palm PDK Hot Apps Program offers developers who use the Plug-In Development Kit to bring their C/C++ apps to Palm for a share of $1 Million in cash or HP Products. Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios supervising nagios?
That would be considered a standard distributed Nagios setup. We do that in our Nagios cluster. We have a number of remote Nagios collectors in different locations. They all forward their service check results back to a central monitoring server. That server doesn't actually run any host or service checks (other than to monitor the remote collectors), but that depends on how you configure your Nagios installation. Each remote collector is fully independent in the fact that they have the standard Nagios web interface, they schedule their own service checks, and they can generate notifications for failed hosts/services (we decided against that and only have our central collector generating notifications). The data is passed back using OCP_daemon to improve performance, which feeds data back to the central collector using NSCA. However, due to the size of our setup, without heavy use of templating and fully automated configuration file management, it would be a nightmare to maintain. Re: [Nagios-users] Xen nrpe/plugin output
Actually, it's only getting one line of input. The line ends after the first VM name. http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/pluginapi.html gives the "Plugin output spec" which explains how to do multi-line output. TEXT OUTPUT | OPTIONAL PERFDATA LONG TEXT LINE 1 LONG TEXT LINE 2 ... LONG TEXT LINE N | PERFDATA LINE 2 PERFDATA LINE 3 ... PERFDATA LINE N You would probably be best served by having the shell script condense the data to one line, though adding a "|\n" after the colon and before the $RUNNING in each of the echo lines would be the simplest option. --Rick On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 9:55 AM, Brian wrote: > I'm checking out this plugin: > > http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/19490.html > > When run on the Xen host the output looks something like this: > > /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_xenvm -w 11 -c 10 > > OK: Xen Hypervisor "tngvm2.blahblahblah.com" is running Xen VMs: bret > jeremy > lenny > roger > db12 > dev1 > dev2 > v2 > train1 > train2 > train3 > train4 > > On the cgi/http services output it reads like this: > > Xen OK 08-05-2010 09:30:03 0d 21h 56m 7s 1/10 > > (only 2 lines of output in the Status Information column) > > OK: Xen Hypervisor "tngvm2.agilemind.com" is running > Xen VMs: bret > > I know 13 lines is a bit excessive but would like to see all DomU's that > are running on a given host - at a glance. > > On the Service State Information page it does show all DomU's that are > running on the host. > > What is limiting the output to 2 lines? > > Do I need to add html to the plugin??? > > TIA > > > -- > This message has been scanned for viruses and > dangerous content by MailScanner, and is > believed to be clean. > > > -- > The Palm PDK Hot Apps Program offers developers who use the > Plug-In Development Kit to bring their C/C++ apps to Palm for a share > of $1 Million in cash or HP Products. [Nagios-users] Nagios supervising nagios?
Hi list, I searched a bit around, but I don't find a solution to my (IMO) simple idea: if I have nagios installed on different servers, is it possible to have a central nagios-instance that gets it's data from the remote ones? The idea is to have different nagios-instances which are independent, but which can be monitored from a central nagios-instance. As far as I read, both NSCA and NRPE are not exactly what I'm looking for. Could Opsview do something like that? I'm checking out this plugin: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/19490.html When run on the Xen host the output looks something like this: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_xenvm -w 11 -c 10 OK: Xen Hypervisor "tngvm2.blahblahblah.com" is running Xen VMs: bret jeremy lenny roger db12 dev1 dev2 v2 train1 train2 train3 train4 On the cgi/http services output it reads like this: Xen OK 08-05-2010 09:30:03 0d 21h 56m 7s 1/10 (only 2 lines of output in the Status Information column) OK: Xen Hypervisor "tngvm2.agilemind.com" is running Xen VMs: bret I know 13 lines is a bit excessive but would like to see all DomU's that are running on a given host - at a glance. On the Service State Information page it does show all DomU's that are running on the host. What is limiting the output to 2 lines? Do I need to add html to the plugin??? [Nagios-users] check_snmp not working, but snmpget does
Hello, I am running nagios 2.9 on Ubuntu server. It has been functioning fine and we are starting to monitor more equipment. I am trying to get SNMP to work with the idea of monitoring a Cisco 501 through an ipsec tunnel. The VPN/networking side works fine, it is just Nagios I cannot get to work. If I run snmpwalk: snmpwalk -v 1 -c public x.x.x.x then it reutrns back the full result set from a mixture of mibs (SNMPv2-MIB,IF-MIB being the main ones) snmpget on a speceifc OID: snmpget -v 1 -c public x.x.x.x ifNumber.0 IF-MIB::ifNumber.0 = INTEGER: 2 If I try and run the check_snmp command manually, specifying the snmp v1 I get the following: ./check_snmp -H 10.0.30.1 -c cisco-assp -P 1 -o IF-MIB::ifNumber.0 External command error: Cannot find module (IF-MIB): At line 0 in (none) IF-MIB::ifNumber.0: Unknown Object Identifier The MIBS are in /usr/share/snmp/mibs, I have run the export MIBDIRS command to locate to the correct location, but check_snmp still has issue with finding them.
